  • Episode 35: It's Not Your Fault - Regulating Emotions After Sociopathic Abuse

Today I want to continue with the topic of emotion regulation. Emotions can be challenging to manage without the added layers of abuse from a narcissist or sociopath, but emotions do serve a purpose. In this episode, I'll talk about the purpose of different emotions and what gets in the way of us being able to manage our emotions sometimes. (And it's more than what it might look like at first glance, i.e. that niggling voice in your head telling you you're just "weak" or "broken.")

  • Episode 34: How to Decrease Your Emotional Suffering After Narcissistic Abuse

Healing after trauma isn’t a straight line. One moment you’ll feel ok, the next minute find yourself angry or in tears. It can be an emotional rollercoaster and just being on the emotional rollercoaster can be exhausting. Stay on the rollercoaster long enough and there’s a good chance you’ll get sick in one way or the other. Some of us settle into low-grade, chronic resentment. In this state, you’re just going through the motions without any real joy or interest in life like you used to have. Some people get stuck in a perpetual state of anxiety, always on guard, irritable, have trouble with relationships. Some of us get stuck in avoidance of pretty much everything we used to love, including the people in our lives. We isolate. Hang out at home. Oversleep. Distract with YouTube videos. All of these things are normal behaviors after we experience a trauma. And as normal as they are, they are meant to be a temporary state. In order to move forward, we need to get a handle on our emotions. We need to learn to emotion regulation skills. That’s what I’m going to be talking about starting with this episode and over the next few episodes.

Specifically today, I’m going to discuss

    · What Emotion Regulation means

    · Why It's Important to Understand Your Own Emotions & What They Do For You

    · How to Decrease the Frequency of Unwanted Emotions

    · How to Decrease Vulnerability to Emotion Mind

    · How to Decrease Emotional Suffering

  • Episode 33: Safeguarding Self-Respect When Communicating With High-Conflict People

In the last 3 episodes I've been talking about how you can be more strategic when you have to communicate with a narcissist, sociopath or other toxic person. Today's episode is all about how you can make sure you keep your self-respect in-tact while still attempting to achieve the point of the conversation. As always, I recommend communicating with that toxic person in writing...either text or email...if you're able to.

  • Episode 30: Why Your State of Mind Matters & How to Change It

Do your emotions override your logical, rational mind or does your logic override your emotions? Either extreme will hinder your healing and make your life more difficult. In this episode I explain States of Mind from a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) perspective, offer an alternative to operating in extremes and provide tips to help you be more mindful of your own state of mind (and why you might want to do this in the first place.)
