This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection: In a small village nestled amongst the mountains of land-locked Lesotho, an 80-year-old widow awaits the return of her only surviving family member: her son, a migrant worker labouring in a South African coal mine. It is Christmas and he is due home. Somber messengers deliver the news: her son has died in a mining accident. Distraught by the sudden news of his untimely death, Mantoa struggles to find meaning in her existence. An invisible wall of bewilderment arises and stands between Mantoa and the outside world. God, the village, and reality too, appear further and further away. Consumed by grief, her yearning for death and reuniting with her family steadily grows. She yearns to be laid to rest in the local cemetery with her loved ones. Mantoa winds up her affairs early and makes arrangements for her own burial. Her plans are punctuated when she learns that the village is to be forcibly resettled due to the construction of a dam reservoir. The land will be flooded and the cemetery desecrated. Mantoa’s resolve is unwavering; igniting a collective spirit of defiance within the community. In the final dramatic moments of her life, Mantoa’s legend is forged and made eternal.

  • Sanal Kumar Sasidharan – Shadow of Water #Venezia76

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, director of the film Shadow of Water.

Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan presented his film, Shadow of Water, in the Orizzonti section of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. We had previously met him at the International Rotterdam Film Festival a few years ago, where he presented Sexy Durga, for which he won the Hivos Tiger Award. With his new film, he returns to investigate many of the same themes, especially that of the entitlement of a man’s psyche on a woman. On this interview, he explains to us why he felt the need to return to this plus the interesting working method he used to make the movie.

Shadow of Water: Teenager Janaki and her scrawny paramour visit the city behind her mother’s back. He’s arranged for a ride from his boss, a sullen man who tells Janaki that he knows she’s lied to her mother. The trio drive into the city where the teenagers are besotted with the lights, the malls and the beach. They lose track of time and are forced to stay the night in a bare-bones motel where the horrors begin. A magic realist portrait of India’s growing pains.

  • Jan Pedersen – Media for All 8 – Stockholm

PODCAST | Francesca Raffi interviews Jan Pedersen, for FRED’s periodical programme on media accessibility.

Jan Pedersen is Associate Professor in Translation Studies, Director of The Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies, and Deputy Head of the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism at Stockholm University. He used to work as a TV subtitler for many years. These days, he mainly teaches in audiovisual translation and subtitling, but he has over the years taught in diverse fields; mainly translation, but also linguistics and English, at all levels. His main field of research is audiovisual translation, and he specialises in subtitling studies. His first large-scale project was Scandinavian Subtitles, which was a study of the norms that govern Swedish, Danish and Norwegian subtitles from a technical and cultural perspective. He is currently running a project called Visualized Metaphors in Subtitling, which investigates how figures of speech are rendered in subtitled media. He is also carrying out research on Swedish subtitles produced by amateurs in the project Swedish Fansubs. He ha recently joined the editorial board of Journal of Audiovisual Translation (the first international journal dedicated to audiovisual translation studies published by European Association for Studies in Screen Translation).

The 8th Media for All International Conference was held at Stockholm University on June 17–19, 2019. The conference attracted academics, researchers, language practitioners, translators, interpreters, broadcasters, government agencies, support groups and the audiovisual translation (AVT) and media accessibility (MA) industry, not only from Europe, but indeed from all over the world. The aim, as Jan Pedersen says in the interview, was to create and mediate understanding in an increasingly complex mediascape. Understanding not only of audiovisual content, but also understanding of and between producers, consumers and prosumers, understanding for the technical and cognitive processes involved, understanding for consumers’ needs and desires, and understanding of and for working conditions, among many other perspectives.

  • Jan-Louis Kruger – Media for All 8 – Stockholm

PODCAST | Francesca Raffi interviews Jan-Louis Kruger, for FRED’s periodical programme on media accessibility.

Jan-Louis Kruger is Head of the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia where he also teaches in audiovisual translation. His main research interests include studies on the reception and processing of audiovisual translation products including aspects such as cognitive load, comprehension, attention allocation, and psychological immersion. His current research projects investigate cognitive load in the context of educational subtitling with a view to optimising subtitles as language support in second language environments, as well as the processing of subtitles as dynamic text using eye tracking. Before joining the editorial board of Journal of Audiovisual Translation (the first international journal dedicated to audiovisual translation studies published by European Association for Studies in Screen Translation), he was a co-editor of Perspectives – Studies in Translation Theory and Practice.

As Jan-Louis Kruger says in the interview, research on the reception and processing of multimodal texts has developed rapidly. This has given us new insights into the way viewers, for example, process the text of subtitles while also attending to auditory input as well as the rich visual code of film. The presentation speed of subtitles is a highly controversial topic in AVT. Recent research tends to be concerned with the question of what presentation speed viewers can handle. Less work has been done on the impact of high presentation rates on viewer experience, or more specifically, on the ability of viewers to access the multimodal richness of a subtitled film. Therefore, in the interview, Jan-Louis Kruger will present the findings of a recent experiment designed explicitly to determine the impact of presentation speed not only on viewer comprehension and attention distribution, but also on the very act of reading.

  • Agnieszka Szarkowska – Intermedia Conference – Warsaw

PODCAST | Francesca Raffi interviews Agnieszka Szarkowska, for FRED’s periodical programme on media accessibility.

Agnieszka Szarkowska is Associate Professor in the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw. She is the head of AVT Lab, one of the first research groups on audiovisual translation. Agnieszka is a researcher, academic teacher, ex-translator, translator trainer, and media accessibility consultant. Between 2016 and 2018 she was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Centre for Translation Studies, University College London, working on the project “Exploring Subtitle Reading with Eye Tracking Technology” funded by the European Commission. Her areas of expertise include audiovisual translation, media accessibility and translator training. She has participated in many research projects, including eye tracking studies on subtitling, audio description in education, text-to-speech audio description, multilingualism in subtitling for the deaf and the hard of hearing, respeaking, and modern art for all. Agnieszka is the Vice-President of the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST), a member of European Society for Translation Studies (EST), Galician Observatory for Media Accessibility (GALMA), Intermedia Research Group, AKCES expert group and an honorary member of the Polish Audiovisual Translators Association (STAW).

As Agnieszka Szarkowska says in the interview, the field of media accessibility is becoming ever more complex and users more aware of what they want in terms of media accessibility services, thus demanding their just rights as audiovisual citizens in terms of both quantity and quality. This is also the reason why a Round Table on AVT localization was organised at the Media For All conference where professionals and academics, as Agnieszka says in the interview, discussed some of the most “hot topics” in media accessibility.
