PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Jan Komasa, director of the film Corpus Christi.
Director Jan Komasa talks about his film, Corpus Christi, presented in the Giornate degli Autori strand of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. The director talks to us about the themes of religion and coming-of-age that are featured in the film. He tells us a little about the Bartosz Bielenia, the lead actor of the film, as the juvie-rebel-turned preacher by chance.
Corpus Christi is the story of 20-year-old Daniel, who experiences a spiritual transformation while living in a Youth Detention Center. He wants to become a priest but this is impossible because of his criminal record. When he is sent to work at a carpenter’s workshop in a small town, on arrival he dresses up as a priest and accidentally takes over the local parish. The arrival of the young, charismatic preacher is an opportunity for the local community to begin the healing process after a tragedy that happened there.

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand, directors of the film Woman.
Directors Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand talk about their latest work together Woman, having its official premiere here in Venezia 76. Based on first-person encounters, the project deals with topics such as motherhood, education, marriage or financial independence but also menstruations or sexuality. The public discovers the voices of women as you have never heard them before.
Woman is a worldwide project giving a voice to 2000 women across 50 different countries. Despite its very large scale, the film offers an intimate portrait of those who constitute half of the humanity. It is an opportunity to shed light on the injustices women are subjected to all over the world, but what the film would like to underline most is the inner strength of women and their capacity to change the world despite all the difficulties they are facing.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Yonfan, director of the film No. 7 Cherry Lane.
Yonfan presented his latest film, No. 7 Cherry Lane, in the main competition of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. This film also feels historic because it is the first Hong Kong production to compete for the main prize at the Venice festival in nearly a decade, the first film directed by Yonfan in about a decade and his first work of animation – though he likes to define it a “motion picture,” and he tells us why here. Also in this interview, the director talks about the sexuality expressed in this movie and what it is that makes it a love letter to Hong Kong and cinema.
No. 7 Cherry Lane: During the rise of the materialistic comfort of life in the 1960s, there emerges an undercurrent of danger in Hong Kong. Ji yuan tai qi hao tells the tale of Ziming, a Hong Kong University undergraduate, entangled between his amorous feelings for Mrs Yu, a self-exiled mother from Taiwan in the White Terror period, and her beautiful daughter Meiling. He takes them to different movies and through a series of magical moments on the big screen, forbidden passions are revealed. The era coincides with Hong Kong’s turbulent times of 1967.
