PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Joaquin Phoenix, actor of the film Joker.
Joaquin Phoenix is the absolute protagonist of Joker by Todd Philips, in competition at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. In the origin story of Batman principal antagonist, Phoenix portrays the evolution or involution of Arthur Fleck who, in a world that lacks of empathy, can’t find his place in despite putting always on his “happy face”. Phoenix reveals how he preferred to be Joker rather than Arthur Fleck as the former is constantly defeated by rules and constrictions while the latter is finally free to be whoever he wants: dancing, laughing out loud.
Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night… but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Zazie Beetz plays Sophie, the single mom of a 5 year old girl in Todd Philips’ Joker, in competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival. in the life of Arthur Fleck aka Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix, she represents a chance of empathy in a world, of Gotham City, that lacks one. For Emma Tillinger, this is the first time producing a comic book film but she has always considered Joker as an exploration of the human mind as it stands halfway between a blockbuster and a arthouse film.

Lauren Greenfield joins us at our Venice studios to discuss about the unbelievable – and yet extremely true – story about Imelda Marcos and her family in The Kingmaker, screening here in Venezia 76 out of competition. From a character study to a real investigation into the past, present and future horrors of the Marcos Family in the Philippines, The Kingmaker is a powerful documentary the helps us to unlock the dangers that we are facing today and hopefully avoid the same mistakes we have committed in the past.
The Kingmaker: Centred on the indomitable character of Imelda Marcos, The Kingmaker examines, with unprecedented access, the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines. The film explores the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicles Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency.
