PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Noah Baumbach, actors and director of the film Marriage Story.
“From the narrative structure of a divorce I was able to tell the story of a marriage”: these are the words through which Noah Baumbach describes the starting point of Marriage Story, in competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson focus on explaining two very symbolic and yet delicate moments in the film, when their couple is really dissolving. The details are the key to understand their characters and make the audience feel like they know them. Laura Dern plays the wife’s lawyer in the film and Baumbach gifts her with one of the best speeches/lines in cinema so far. Laura’s presence through her character is a statement that women can have it all or at least can try to achieve this completion.
Marriage Story is an incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.

Director Raymund Ribay Gutierrez and Actress Max Eve Eigenmann join us in Venice to talk about their experience on Raymund’s first feature Verdict, here in the Orizzonti’s official competition. A gruelling journey through the harsh reality of bureaucracy in the common cases of domestic violence in the Philippines, Verdict avoids staticity in favour of a compelling and visceral style, where pain and frustration are tangible.
Verdict: Joy and her six-year-old daughter Angel live in Manila, with her husband, Dante, a small-time criminal. As so often in the past, Dante comes home drunk at night and beats Joy brutally. This time, he also hurts Angel. Joy grabs her daughter and flees to the local police post to finally get him sent to jail. Justice, Joy learns, takes time at best and is impossible to get at worst. Not without reason, she feels that she and her daughter are increasingly under threat.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Dominik Moll, director of the film Only the Animals.
Filmmaker Dominik Moll’s latest film, Only the Animals, opened this year’s edition of the Giornate degli Autori section of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival in Italy and we cuaght up with him for a chat about it. The film is about the mystery of connection and the desire or need for illusion in the modern world, and Moll based it on a book by Colin Niels. The director tells us about some of these themes, including that of multiculturality, and a little bit about the novelistic structure of the film, which he also applied to his movie.
Only the Animals: A woman has disappeared. The day after a snowstorm, her car is found on a road leading to a plateau with nothing but a few scattered farms. The gendarmes have nothing to go on, while five individuals well know they have something to do with the woman’s disappearance. They all keep their secrets to themselves, but no one suspects that the whole story began far from these windswept wintry peaks: on another continent, in the burning sun, where poverty doesn’t stop desire from taking the law into its own hands.

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews João Nicolau, director of the film Technoboss.
We talked with João Nicolau, director of Technoboss presented in the international competition of the 72 Locarno Film Festival. The director talks with FRED about his intention to make a film about a character of sixty years old avoiding all the kinds of commiseration that usually surrounds aging, the importance of music in Technoboss, and the reason behind the unconventional choose of Miguel Lobo Antunes as the main protagonist.
Technoboss: Luís Rovisco, divorced and well into his sixties, is hoping to retire soon from his job as the commercial director of SegurVale – Integrated Systems of Access Control. Until that happens, he can more often be found behind the wheel of his car, singing about what he sees along the way. Quick on the draw and with a ready smile, his years of experience allow him to gracefully avoid the traps that technology, his coworkers and a mysteriously absent boss keep setting on his path. Not even the death of Napoleão (a cat), the constant pain in his knee or a family altercation overpower him: there’s no wrong that a song can’t make right. But before Lucinda, the receptionist at Almadrava Hotel, he finds himself singing to a different tune.
