    Felix Van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown) and actress-turned-director Charlotte Vandermeersch tell us about how they discovered Paolo Cognetti’s novel and how he supported their film project, about writing together and working for the first time as a duo behind the camera. They also discuss the Hindu representation the title comes from, the element of language and verbalisation, paternity, and evoke the cinematography as well as the challenges of a mountain shoot.

    The Eight Mountains : The Eight Mountains is the story of a friendship. Of children becoming men who try to erase the footprints of their fathers, but who, through the twists and turns they take, always end up returning home. Pietro is a boy from the city, Bruno is the last child of a forgotten mountain village. Over the years Bruno remains faithful to his mountain, while Pietro is the one who comes and goes. Their encounters introduce them to love and loss, reminding them of their origins, letting their destinies unfold, as Pietro and Bruno discover what it means to be true friends for life.

The protagonist is Vicky Krieps and she was the one who brought Ulliel on board of the project, in the role of her on-screen husband.

    More than Ever: Hélène and Mathieu have been happy together for many years. The bond between them is deep. Faced with an existential decision, Hélène travels alone to Norway to seek peace, an act that will test the strength of their love.

    With her debut feature Rodeo, director Lola Quivoron chooses a non-professional actress Julia Ledru to portray a girl forcing her way into a man’s world, the motocross. The film, screening at the 75th Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section is a metaphor for the change we’re hoping to see in society. Lola Quivoron reveals how she became friends with the community of riders she already portrayed in her short film Au Loin Baltimore and that the decision of making Rodeo came because of this friendship.

    Rodeo: Hot tempered and fiercely independent, Julia finds escape in a passion for motorcycles and the high-octane world of urban ‘Rodeos’ – illicit gatherings where riders show off their bikes and their latest daring stunts. After a chance meeting at a Rodeo Julia finds herself drawn into a clandestine and volatile clique and, striving to prove herself to the ultra-masculine group, she is faced with a series of escalating demands that will make or break her place in the community.

Award winning director Franziska Stünkel will be attending the festival as a special guest to present her new film The Last Execution and participate in a number of Q&As.

    Filmmaker Peter Mcdowell have been wanting to find the truth over his brother’s death in Saigon for 12 years and now the result of his cinematic journey is Jimmy in Saigon, screening at the 37th Lovers Film Festival in the Real Lovers’ section. By interviewing the members of his family and some old friends of his brother, Mcdowell built his film little by little letting the emotions take over the mystery elements. As Tara Judah wrote in her review on ScreenDaily “Peter and his film are fuelled by the drive to make historical amends; to give visibility to queer love kept secret” and the Lovers Film Festival is the right place to celebrate this life and love.

    Jimmy in Saigon: Jimmy was a boy who left for the Vietnam War and died under unclear circumstances in Saigon in 1972. His younger brother Peter McDowell, director of the documentary, was only five when Jimmy died and from that moment the whole family stopped talking about him. The documentary is the result of a 10-year effort to break the silence and the shame that was spinning around the figure of Jimmy. Through old photographs, letters and interviews with Jimmy’s closest friends, the director manages to bring an almost forgotten queer existance back to life.

Alcalà explains how he developed the idea of the earthquake linking two places together through its effects and at the same time the saying that Earthquakes are the way in which the Earth can free itself of its ghosts.

    Finlandia: A devastating heartquake hits Oaxaca. After that, nothing will be the same for the lives of the Muxes, the so-called third gender.
