A conversation with Philip Doherty, whose feature directorial debut, Redemption of a Rogue, took home the Best Irish Film and Best Irish First Featyre awards at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh. In this podcast, Doherty talks about his background in theatre and what prompted him to make a film. He also talks about the origins of the story of Redemption of a Rogue, its biblical references and prominent use of a sense of humour.
Redemption of a Rogue: Jimmy is a nihilist who carries around a black leather doctor’s bag containing the rope he plans to hang himself with. Filled with guilt and shame, he returns to his hometown in the cold austere beauty of West Cavan. As soon as Jimmy visits, his ailing father breathes his last. Thunder rumbles and rain starts to pour. But there is a condition in the will… his father cannot be buried on a wet day. Days roll into weeks in an endless rainy purgatory, with some colourful local characters, as Jimmy seeks redemption.

A conversation with filmmaker/researcher Ludovica Fales on her three-lesson long online course on experimental cinema and interactive projects. The course is titled Open Visions and it is presented by the Cineteca di Milano on their streaming platform in collaboration with Red Shoes Associazione Culturale. The course covers the history of this type of visual storytelling from the early days of moving images to modern times. In addition to the course, Fales also talks about her work with the London-rooted filmmaking collective named Kitchen Sink Collective.

A conversation with Boyd van Hoeij, who wears many hats within the film industry, including that of artistic adviser of the Luxembourg City Film Festival, whic recently launched a series of monthly physical screenings titled LuxFilmLab. In this interview, we talk about the festival, some of its history and its most recent edition, which celebrated the annual event’s 10th anniversary, though it had to be cut short in response to the coronaviru outbreak back in March. We also van Hoeij to share his thoughts about how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the film industry in this historical moment and whether the impact will be felt for quite some time.

A conversation with Anthony Andrews, co-founder and artistic director of We Are Parable, the London-based award-winning film exhibition company. We Are Parable is currently collaborating with the BFI on a week-long series of films and online events celebrating Black British cinema. The takeover program is taking place across various BFI channels and is titled Who We Are. In this conversation, Andrews talks about that as well as the history of We Are Parable and its aim, including some of its highligh events, such as the Spike is 60 Film Festival, which celebrated the legacy of the great American filmmaker Spike Lee.

This week, we are joined with the festival’s programme director, Hülya Sungu, to talk some more about the festival itself. In this conversation, we talk about the significance of such a thematic film festival in Turkey. We also talk about the challenging of managing to transition the inaugural edition of the festival into an online edition. Then, of course, we talk about the films themselves that were screened as part of the programme.

A conversation with Waad al-Kateab, director of For Sama, a powerful documentary on the Syrian uprising. The story is defined by a personal and distinctly female perspective. For Sama premiere last year and since then, it has gained worldwide acclaim, including being awarded the main prize at the recent inaugural edition of the International Migration Film Festival. The reaction prompted al-Kateab to birth a new initiative titled Action for Sama, to raise awareness of the continued targeting of healthcare facilities in Syria. In this interview, we talk about that as well as other things, including the dangers of documenting the uprising and her experiences of being a mother during those violent years. In this interview, he talks about how they have worked to adjust to the decision of moving the section online as well as the novel introduction of FirstCut+ within it.

A conversation with Mira Staleva, head of Sofia Meetings, the co-production market of the Sofia International Film Festival in Bulgaria. This year, Sofia Meetings has had to go online in response to the global pandemic. Its program has also had to be split into part: the first part was dedicated to Works in Progress and took place in May; the second part took place at the time of the interview, focusing on second feature pitchings and professional events. As well as providing us with a definition for Sofia Meetings and talking a little bit about its history, Staleva also tells us about making the necessary transition for this year to the digital world and shares with us some of the extensive webinars, talks and events that are part of its 2020 program.
