  • Jay Weissberg – Pordenone Silent Film Festival #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Jay Weissberg, director of the Pordenone Silent Film Festival, from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Jay Weissberg’s first edition as director of the Pordenone Silent Film Festival (Giornate del Cinema Muto) will take place from October 1st-8th. Excitement is hard to hold back as he anticipates some things we can expect from this year’s program, including special screenings of The Thief of Baghdad (1924) and a retrospective on the first even winner of Best Art Direction at the Academy Awards, William Cameron Menzies. On top of this, the festival hosts a collegium for young silent film enthusiasts, which Weissberg talks about. Jay Weissberg is, of course, also an established film critic, and us being at the Venice Film Festival, we ask him about his thoughts on this year’s edition of the oldest film festival in the world.

Director Vincent Biron and his actor Alexandre Lavigne tell us about the making of Prank, a wierdly funny low budget comedy, unconsciously inspired by Todd Solondz and Kevin Smith. The freedom of a 4 people film crew and a low low budget gave the film the freedom it needed to succeed, and Vincent tells us how true this has been.

PRANK. Stefie, an unremarkable teenage loner, is recruited by Martin, Jean-Sé and Lea to record their daily capers with his cellphone. The four pranksters decide to set up a stunt that go beyond anything they’ve done so far… But this time, who will be the victim? A funny and cruel coming-of-age story about love, friendship, peer pressure and loss of innocence.

In our interview with the director of the movie The Fury of a Patient Man, he described the film as treasuring realism withing a genre concept, like revenge. The film’s intensity works also thanks to De La Torre, who ups the game with his performance.

After a description of his character, offering his insight on his viewpoint of the character he plays, he then says that as an actor, he tries not to look at his roles as characters. In this sense, in his work as an actor, he likes to work more as a chameleon. “Human behaviour is amazing,” he mentions. But did he understand how real the film would have to get, and how dark things would become in the final piece?

De La Torre also talks about his collaboration with the director, offering some amusing experimentation that led to the final work, a further testimony to the collaborative effort that defined The Fury of a Patient Man.

  • Andrew Dominik – One More Time With Feeling #Venezia73

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews director Andrew Dominik, who talks about his film One More Time With Feeling from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING. Originally a performance-based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as it delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. The result is stark, fragile and raw and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.
