Oliver Hermanus – director – The Endless River
South-African director Oliver Hermanus talks about the challenge he took on in his third film, his choice of actors and their work together. THE ENDLESS RIVER, which received mixed reviews on the Lido but certainly left no one indifferent, deals not only with bereavement and infinite solitude, but also with the possibility (or not) of transcending anger and pain after losing everything, and the climate of violence in South-Africa.
THE ENDLESS RIVER: In a small city not far from Cape Town, amongt the vineyards, Gilles (embodied with a beautifully mind-driven physicality by French actor Nicolas Duvauchelle), a foreigner who has settled here with his family, has to cope with the atrocious murder of his wife and children and the resigned uselessness of the local justice system.
When his main suspect is run over and dies not far from his farm, Gilles’ path and his solitude cross those of the local criminal’s quietly brave widow, Tiny (Crystal-Donna Roberts), they tacitly decide to leave all blame on the side and endure together the most unspeakable pain. Their striking tragedies and intense journey side by side were very handsomely shot by DoP Chris Lotz.

Ruchika Oberoi – Director – Island City
FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Ruchika Oberoi, who presented her feature directorial debut named Island City at the Venice Days section of the 72nd Venice Film Festival.
Ruchika explains in detail the nature of the film and the themes and issues from which she drew inspiration. She also tells us about the techniques she used in making the film, and also about the structure of the film which is clearly split up into three episodes.
ISLAND CITY: The film follows three stories set in Mumbai. The first one is about a middle-aged man who wins the office “Fun Committee Award”, which entitles him to a whole day full of fun. He is most reluctant to leave the safety of his cubicle, but he has to. The second story begins with a domineering pater familias, Anil, who is on life support. Seeking some relief, his family decides to buy a TV, which Anil had banned; now, every night, the family plugs into a popular soap. The third one centers on Aarti, whose repetitive existence has slowly made her more and more mechanical and numb. Then one day there arrives a most intimate letter and everything changes.

Grant Gee – Director – Innocence of Memories-Orhan Pamuk’s Museum and Istanbul
Grant Gee brings us through the Museum Of Innocence in Istanbul, using a mixture of fiction and documentary, with the precise intent to fascinate us , and it works.
Orhan Pamuk – Turkey’s Nobel laureate for Literature – opens a museum in Istanbul. A museum that’s a fiction: its objects trace a tale of doomed love in 1970’s Istanbul. The film takes a tour of the objects as the starting point for a trip through love stories, landscapes and the chemistry of the city. “Like many people, when I first visited Istanbul, I read Orhan Pamuk. From the very start, my view of the city was through the prism of his imagination. And I knew that Orhan had imagined a place called ‘The Museum of Innocence’ and in 2008 had published a big novel of that name. What I didn’t know was that, two months after my first visit to Istanbul in 2012, Orhan would open the doors to the real Museum of Innocence. A real, 5-storey museum of real objects – the debris and treasure of a tragic love affair from 30 years ago. A museum which immediately became established as part of Istanbul’s real cultural itinerary: the Bosphorus Cruise, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Museum of Innocence.” [Grant Gee]
