  • “Madame Ida”: interview with director Jacob Møller

At the 42th Torino Film Festival, FRED Film Radio interviewed Jacob Møller, director of “Madame Ida”, a movie presented in competition.

A story of love and lack of love

“Madame Ida” is the first feature film of Jacob Møller. Where did this story come from? “I suppose it came from when I was writing it, I was very fascinated about the meaning of love and lack of love in our lives. And that came from my own parents, who both of them randomly grew up in orphanages, quite hard lives, with not a lot of love in it, and that’s led to some pretty tragic stories in my family. But they decided that me and my siblings were going to have a childhood with much more love and care than they had. And so I’ve just been fascinated by the meaning of love and care and security in our lives and what kind of human beings it creates, maybe not to have it in your lives”.

    The judgment

Judgment is one of the theme addresses by the movie. All the three female characters are judged for a reason or another. How did Jacob Møller, a man, work on this aspect? “The truth is that I haven’t thought about it that much”, admits the director. “I didn’t make a decision: ‘This has to be a female story’. That was just what this story required. Obviously, I’m not female and I’m not a mother, but I can tell you that I’ve never written three characters that are closer to myself than these three women are. And I’m not a woman, but I can relate to their struggles and their emotions and their tragedies and their judgments, they’re very, very close to me. The truth is I haven’t really given it much thought as to me as a man making a film about females. This was just what I wanted to make, I suppose”.

  • “Holy Rosita”, interview with the director Wannes Destoop and the lead actress Daphne Agten

“Holy Rosita” is a comedy drama presented in competition at the 42nd Torino Film Festival. Telling the story of Rosita, a good-hearted woman loved by all the neighbourhood but considered not fit to be a mother, the film dwells into the concept of acceptance and the social conventions that our society builds and the burden that these conventions are for those who are considered outsiders. We met with the director Wannes Destoop and the actress Daphne Agten to talk about it.

Rosita is the outsider we all know and we should all love

Wannes Destoop, director of “Holy Rosita” has always been fascinated by outsiders, by the outcast of society. Rosita, played by Daphne Agten, is the definite one, as she is nice and loving but still kept outside society and underestimated. For the director we as society are not in a position of telling anyone like Rosita if she can be a mother or not. This is the central message of the movie.

  • “Nina”, interview with director Andrea Jaurrieta

“Nina” by Andrea Jaurrieta is in competition at the 42°Torino Film Festival.

The film is a thriller drama starring Patricia López Arnaiz and it is defined by its author as a contemporary western.

Jaurrieta investigates on the meaning of vengeance and whether it can be a solution as violence should never be fought with violence.

López Arnaiz is “Nina“, a woman deciding to return to her hometown after many many years to finally get her revenge with the man who destroyed her life, played on screen by Darío Grandinetti.

Of her film, Andrea Jaurrieta wrote in her director’s notes: “Through Nina I first want to talk about abuse, make a reflection on where the limits of consent are. A subject that crosses cultural barriers and affects all societies in a transversal way. In my opinion, there is an urgent need to reflect on abuse from an active feminine point of view. Not from victimization, but from the psychological and social complexity that figures in this kind of relationship.”
