  • Matt Damon, Jodie Comer – The Last Duel #Venezia78

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Matt Damon and  Jodie Comer, actors of the film The Last Duel.

Matt Damon and Jodie Comer talk with Angelo Acerbi about The Last Duel by Ridley Scott. Jodie is the heroine, an unusual, for those ages, woman who wants to be heard and seeks revenge, Matt is her husband, a knight for the king – and also one of the screenwriter of the film, with many backstories that he shares with us.

The Last Duel: A gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance set against the brutality of 14th century France. The historical epic is a cinematic and thought-provoking drama that explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. When Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God’s hands.

  • Ola Jankowska – Anatomia #Giornate2021

PODCAST | Ilaria Gomarasca interviews Ola Jankowska, director of the film Anatomia.

“To me Anatomy is above all a meditation on the ambiguous space between things and people being and not being. It’s a story of potential alternative lives, ghosts and phantom feelings that don’t know how to be born and yet overwhelm – of love, loss, uncertainty.” Ola Jankowska on her first feature film Anatomia screened at Venice Giornate degli Autori 2021.

Anatomia: Mika arrives in Poland to pay a hospital visit to her father, who is suffering from severe brain injury and memory loss. It’s the first time they have met in many years, yet her father thinks they still live together and she’s a teenager. For a brief time Mika becomes her father’s companion in perplexity – gently guiding him through the labyrinth of his fading mind. And as she does so, she sets off on a journey through her own life. By merging digital, 35 mm, VHS, infrared and archival footage, the sense of time and space start breaking up: the present blends with the long gone past and places reveal their far-off history and memories. In the meantime, the father’s condition worsens. And thus life and its end also begin to blur.

  • Gianluca Matarrese – The Last Chapter #SIC36

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Gianluca Matarrese, director of the film The Last Chapter.

With his film The Last Chapter, Gianluca Matarrese closed the Cirtic’s Week at the Venice Film Festival. The film focuses on the memory of the past, the acknowledgement of it by the younger generations and the choices we make towards our memories, when we grow old. He tells us the path the film made him do personally on these issues.

The Last Chapter: Bernard has just retired. He is 63 years old, he lives alone with his two cats and decides to move to a new house, the one where he will live the last chapter of the novel of his life. Preparing the boxes, start making a selection: what do I leave here, what do I bring? Bernard is my master and I am his slave. Her latest lover. I help him to put the whip in a box, between the crumbs of his memory, the memories of the loves that AIDS has stolen from his arms, the traces of an adoptive family that rejected him, of the rigid upbringing that he forged it, of a mother and father he never knew. Our sexual games are opportunities for two generations to meet: between a whiplash and a leather harness we discuss love, death, the AIDS epidemic in the Eighties, his new life project, us. The wounds and grave goods of a survivor, a cry of life in the light of sexual impulses.

  • Sofya Gershevich – The Hand of God #Venezia78

PODCAST | Ilaria Gomarasca interviews Sofya Gershevich, actress of the film The Hand of God.

Actress Sofya Gershevich talks about her experience on the set of Paolo Sorrentino’s film The Hand of God, competing at the 78th Mostra di Venezia.

The Hand of God: The story of a young man’s heartbreak and liberation in Naples, Italy. It’s the 1980s and 17-year old Fabietto Schisa might be an awkward Italian teen struggling to find his place, but he finds joy in an amazing family who love life, relish mischief and take deep pleasure in meddling in one another’s complicated relationships. Then comes a pair of events that alter everything. One is the triumphant arrival in Naples of a god-like athletic legend: high-flying soccer idol Maradona, who has Fabietto, and the whole scrappy city, feeling a pride that once seemed impossible. The other is an inconceivable accident that will drop the bottom out of Fabietto’s world, setting his future in motion. Seemingly saved by Maradona, touched by chance or the hand of God, Fabietto wrestles with the nature of fate, the confusion of loss, and the intoxicating freedom of being alive. In his most movingly personal film, Sorrentino takes audiences on a sensory journey bursting with the contrasts of tragedy and comedy, love and desire, absurdity and beauty, as Fabietto finds the only way out of total catastrophe through his own imagination.
