Imagine being diagnosed with a chronic illness at a time when there are no disease modifying drugs available.

 On this epsiode of Free Thinking, Montel talks with Ed Tobias, author of The Multiple Sclerosis Toolbox; Tools &Tips for Living with MS. Ed was 32 years old when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 42 years ago. At that time there were no disease-modifying drugs for MS, and MRI’s were just coming on the scene for diagnostics. Despite little information available at the time on living with MS, he was determined to carry on with his life and not let MS get in his way. Ed wrote this book to help guide the newly diagnosed and their loved ones down this path. As Montel often says, “I have MS but MS doesn’t have me!”

On this episode of Free Thinking, Montel talks with Glen “Lewis” Hapeman, a terminally disabled Navy Veteran. While fighting for his life medically, an unexpected four-legged angel came to his aide. Lew rescued an abandoned pitbull named Honey, and then she rescued him. Lew was awarded a grant to send Honey to service dog training school, and she has never left his side since. Lewis and Honey and battling homelessness and need support to keep a roof over their heads while Lewis lives out his final days.

July 25th, is National Hire a Veteran Day. According to the Department of Defense, approximately 200,000 service members transition from military service to civilian life each year. Some veterans may experience difficulty finding civilian employment after leaving the service, even though an overwhelming 94% of employers say that hiring veteran workers is appealing to their organization.
