This is a rare opportunity to hear domestic abuse from the perspective of the parent of a victim. Jo is Amy’s mum and gives her frank account of the story from her side. The watching, waiting, supporting and being witness to her child being slowly downtrodden by a charming young man she had trusted and welcomed into her home. We hear how it also took all the family’s energy to keep a door always open for Amy even when it may have seemed pointless. To sit with feeling helpless takes great strength and this maybe where Amy found her courage to keep going. This episode is full of ups and downs and uncertainty, but we learn the importance of never giving up on a victim of abuse, whether it is your friend, colleague, or family. Jo talks about the realist aspect of reporting abuse to Police how hard that decision can be, especially when there are no other options. Trauma has touched the whole family, but love has also kept this family together. My total respect for all those who support a victim/ survivor of abuse, often never seeing an acknowledgement or outcome. Please remember you may be the only person keeping the light on for them, when one day they need get out of the dark.
This will be upsetting for some, but it highlights the need for a trauma informed empathic approach to be used by all. If your child is school age and you have concerns, ask to speak to your schools safeguarding lead and request that your child and you receive support for Domestic Abuse. Since 2021 The |Domestic Abuse Bill recognised and named children exposed to domestic abuse are also ‘victims of Domestic Abuse’, and should be supported and protected as such.
