Recent research has emerged stating that using high-intensity activities such as working out, punching a heavy bag, using rage rooms, or other high energy output activities are not actually that useful in releasing anger. The research found that low-intensity activities such as yoga, deep breathing, and meditation may be more useful tools. When I was writing The Rise of Rage, I did a ton of research about catharsis, the act of intentionally releasing negative energy from strong repressed emotions, and I found that indeed catharsis can be highly therapeutic, IF it is done correctly. In this episode of Freedomology, I take a deep dive on catharsis, how it works as a therapeutic tool, and hopefully I debunk a few myths about anger and releasing residual anger along the way.

Toxic workplaces are a common topic of discussion everywhere we look these days. This recent story about a pilot being grounded because of angry outbursts is a prime example. As you'll hear in my unpacking of the story, I don't believe the toxicity begins and ends with the pilot. There is a misunderstanding of anger and its expression that extends from the top brass all the way to the flight crew, that implies anger is a mental health issue that will somehow interfere with a pilot's ability to keep his crew and passengers safe.

Last fall, right around my 35th wedding anniversary and my birthday, I experienced the most intense case of physical and psychological burnout I've ever had. The year previous had been a wild ride. I had lost one of my best friends to cancer. I had been traveling every weekend to volunteer my time and energy for a worthy cause. My dad got sick. Work was challenging. I thought I was coping until I wasn't. My brain and my body said, "Enough", and I was done.
