We are very excited to welcome Joses Ngugi who is a bright, young, innovative leader in the profession. Joses is a new grad with a fiery passion for inspiring others. He looked at nearly 100 companies in his job search because he was extremely clear on what he was looking for and has high standards for himself. He is now working for one of the best physical therapy clinics in the country, and he dives deep into the two things that separate his company from everyone else.
Joses strives to be an inspiration every day for his patients. He doesn't even listen to music anymore in his car; he's always listening to motivational or informative podcasts and audiobooks on his commute and on his lunch break. “If people feel like they’re just a job to you, they’re not going to buy into you.” Sometimes though, engaging patients doesn't require much energy; it's about working smart. Hear his and Andrew’s secret trick for motivating patients that requires absolutely zero work from them.
Joses gives sage advice for PT students feeling bogged down by all the information in school, and you can hear what he would have told himself as a PT student. “I’ve learned more in the past 7 months than I did during my 3 year doctorate. You don’t come out of PT school an amazing clinician. You come out a new grad- a clean slate with a degree.”
We ask Joses how to avoid distractions on social media. "The problem is listening to everything we’re exposed to. Opinions are the freest thing you’re ever going to get from anybody, so you have to find people that match up with what you’re aspiring to do." He also tells us how school’s definition of a great PT isn’t realistic. “You become a legend by focusing on your purpose.”
Joses and Casey Coleman are the creators of The Pre-PT Grind, an online organization that provides all the tools PT school applicants need to not only get into school but the mindset to thrive once they're enrolled. Investing in Pre-PT students is their passion because they are the future and haven’t put limits on themselves. Pre-PT Grind may be a side hustle, but they treat it like a full-fledged business. Joses gives his 5 keys to building a successful side hustle. “You have to make sure you’re not doing it out of desperation of coin. It’s about finding the people you want to serve and giving before asking." You may be surprised to hear how long they gave before asking, and Joses tells a story of how him and Casey almost made a huge mistake. Joses has a great message if you’re lacking confidence in serving others beyond the traditional staff PT role. “Somebody else might be better than you, but because of your diligence, people will trust you to take them a step further.”
Joses loves treating and communicating with patients; he's usually the last one to get his notes done because he can't pass up an opportunity to connect with people. However, he doesn't want to exclusively treat the rest of his career or in other words, he doesn't want to exchange his time for money forever. He wants to spend time with his loved ones, impact more people, and do things now that people leave for retirement. If that sounds like a pipe dream to you, then we urge you to listen to hear that it can be done.
