Sekou Andrews is a spoken-word poet who may, at first, seem like an odd person to have on the show. You’re going to have to trust me on this. Creativity is an important part of playing hard, and it’s my goal to expose you to many different avenues of expressing that creativity. Sekou has incredible insights. We talk about what it’s like to speak in front of Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, and Barack Obama at the same time, and how it feels to get nominated for a Grammy for spoken-word poetry. He offers a different perspective on creativity that you’re going to find benefit from, regardless of whether or not you consider yourself creative.

This may very well be our last podcast recorded in the US. In four days, we are leaving California, and, after spending a week on the East Coast, we will be off to Italy. In honor of that, we’re going to answer questions from our community about the trip, from what we’re taking with us, to the lessons we’ve learned about downsizing and decluttering, all the way to where I’m going to find my hair products. This is a fun, informative conversation that I know you’re going to enjoy.

We are in the process of moving to Italy, and in that process, we’re looking all over the internet for places to educate ourselves on where we’re moving. Like anybody else in the world, we end up getting a lot of our information from TikTok. Kacie Rose is a Broadway actor turned Florence expat. It doesn’t matter if you’re moving to Italy or not, because hearing two people go through the process of something new in their lives and figuring it all out as they work towards their dream is going to bring you so much value.

Why is it that some of us can feel creatively blocked – even when we’re doing something that we supposedly love to do? When you’ve lost some of the passion that got you to where you are, sometimes the best thing to do to rekindle that fire is to walk away. Let go of what you aren’t loving anymore. Chances are, at some point, it will be screaming at you to come back. You’ll have to pull yourself away – and, if not, if you let it go forever, maybe that’s not such a bad thing in the end.

Suze Yalof Schwartz is the creator of Unplug Meditation, an in-person studio (as well as an app) that has Los Angeles going nuts. Her career has been amazing. From working in the fashion industry with Anna Wintour, being a makeover specialist on The Oprah Show, and a fashion correspondent on Good Morning America, she eventually hit a point of burnout.
It was then that she was introduced to meditation and it was a game changer. When she moved to LA she expected meditation to be so common that you could just drop into a studio off the street – but she couldn’t find anything. So she built it instead.
We talk about her former career, running a physical meditation center during a pandemic, the process of creating an app, and more.

You know you have to work hard to get the life you want, but if you aren’t careful, you’re going to get so caught up in the work that you don’t have time to actually live that life. When you’re creating a plan for your future, it’s OK to be in a situation where you have to put your head down and work nonstop for some time – just make sure you’re building a plan that lets you sit back and bask in your well-earned rewards down the road.

Your dream life is going to cost you way less than you think it will – so why are you working so damn hard? You know I’m not against hard work. Hell, it’s half of the name of the show! But so often we focus only on that part of the equation without considering the other half: what’s the finish line? I guarantee you, you’re not as far from your dream life as you think you are, but you may be holding yourself back by moving the finish line over and over again. Pick your destination, go full bore, and take some time to revel in victory before you push the goal post back again. We often feel like we need a hill to climb, so make it the hill of life.

We’re wrapping up our Greek adventures in Mykonos today, and are now within 40 days of moving to Italy. That means every single day is going to be accounted for. A big part of that is going to be taken up by getting rid of things. All of the accumulations from a different life, things we are no longer taking with us. Change can sometimes feel like a type of death, the dying of the person you once were. But in this case, it’s to become someone better: the kind of person you’ve always wanted to be.
