Before he came across the keto diet, Shawn suffered from Epstein-Barr Virus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Hashimoto's disease, fibromyalgia, depression, insomnia, obesity and a pituitary tumor. He considers his health history a gift because fixing his own issues led to him developing an expertise that allows him to help others every day. Shawn is a fellow in the International Society of Sports Nutrition, and a nutritional biochemist. He has over 20 years experience on keto and is known as the world's greatest formulator (he's now formulated over 500 products).

Today’s Topic: Our new mastermind
Since we’ve been on our adventure in Europe, we've had a lot of people messaging us because they love watching what we've been able to build for ourselves.
This podcast is all about helping people who have a dream, but they're a little bit muddy on how to execute. Everyone can use a little bit of help, accountability and some shortcuts based on the long list of mistakes that we've made.
We know that everyone can’t join the Work Hard Play Hard in-person mastermind right now, so we’ve decided to create a virtual mastermind as well. It’s a 90-day commitment starting on November 1. It includes three Push Planner journals (created by Chalene Johnson). The Push Planner is the planner I’ve used to literally double our income, launch this podcast, land in the top 100 on iTunes and launch the Work Hard Play Hard in-person mastermind. We’ll also use Robert Allen’s Getting Things Done system to create something that he calls a mind like water. This enables you to go throughout your day visualizing your goals and acting with clarity without the random thoughts about tasks you have to do.
The first week is going to be a 30 minutes ideation session with Kim so that we can gain absolute clarity on what you want to do. Kim is an ideation machine! Then we’ll teach you the systems we use and do 90-minute mastermind calls every other week.
Don't sign up for this if you just want to keep dreaming and you don't want to take action. Don’t sign up if you don't want to get uncomfortable because this is going to be a group that will hold your feet to the fire, accelerate those goals and help you achieve massive progress within 90 days.
But if you are committed to doing the work, sign up now at workhardplayhard90.com and get the special introductory price.

Emile Steenveld is a former model and actor. His parents escaped apartheid in South Africa and headed for the sunny shores of Australia, and that’s where Emile was born. After a successful modeling career in Australia and in Asia, he headed to LA. Unfortunately that’s when the recession hit. Emile found himself working three jobs and his car was repossessed. Emile decided to try New York and found that his ‘ethnically ambiguous’ look was a better fit for the market there. Then a friend made it big in Bollywood, invited Emile over, and he ended up staying for two years. After exhausting himself modeling in Australia again (he had four days off in a year!), Emile became a motivational coach and speaker and moved to Bali. He now runs transformational retreats with fellow coach and entrepreneur, Joel Brown.

Today’s Topic: Hedonic adaptation
Today our friends from Atlanta, Chris and Matt, join us on the podcast. They’ve been staying with us this week in Florence so we wanted to ask them what they’re loving about Italy. Their top takeaway is the value of slowing down and appreciating the bigger picture.
We’re really enjoying connecting with them on a deeper level, which you get to do when you have a lot of time to spend with people. One thing that we’ve been discussing a lot this week is hedonic adaptation. This means that humans in general have a way of adapting to their environment, so that eventually something new, whether it’s good or bad, just becomes the norm. So if you buy the humongous house, within a couple months it's just your home. If you buy the fancy sports car, at some point it just becomes your car and the means by which you get to work.
There are some things where the novelty never wears off and we never truly just take it for granted like a great conversation, a fantastic bottle of wine, a view of the Tuscan hills in the morning, oceans and sunsets.
We don’t think we would ever get bored living in Florence because it’s such an assault on the senses. But how do you prevent yourself adapting to your environment if you don’t live in Florence?
We think these ideas really help:
We’ll leave you with one of Matt’s favorite quotes from Anthony Bourdain. “Don't tell me what you've eaten. Tell me who you ate it with.”

As an 18-year-old, Alex Banayan went on a mission to talk to some of the most innovative leaders alive today and write a book about it. It took seven years to complete, but mission accomplished! His bestseller, The Third Door, features interviews with Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, Larry King, Maya Angelou, Steve Wozniak, Jane Goodall, Jessica Alba and Quincy Jones. Please note, this is not a story of fearless youthful bravery. Alex says he was completely consumed by fear the whole way through. This is the story of how he did it anyway and what he learnt along the way.

Today’s Topic: Transitions in life
We're less than 30 days away from moving from this beautiful life in Italy to Southern California. Although we’re excited about the move, we also love the life we’ve created here, so it’s going to be a big transition. We love that here nobody's saying, “Would you like fries with that?” The other day Kim was at the deli and the guy said, “I want you to taste something. I've been cooking this ham for 40 hours.” It was the most amazing ham Kim had ever tasted and it wasn't an upsell, he wanted to share it because he was proud of it.
We’re at the point in the transition where it’s starting to get a bit hard. Fun fact: the cost of living in SoCal is about twice as much as in Italy. Sophia will have to go to a new school, we’ll have to make new friends, and we have to rent a house. We're doing calls with potential landlords and they're asking, “Now, what is this Work Hard Play Hard business you have? I don't need you to be having all these parties in the house.” We’re willing to spend up to 5K a month on renting a house, but that’s pretty low for an amazing house close to a beach in a good school district. Our flight from Italy was originally booked to Atlanta. We wanted to change it to land in California, and Delta was going to charge us $26,000, so we ended up buying new tickets with Air Italy.
The biggest gift we think you can give yourself with transition is to bring on the suck. In other words, acknowledge that transitions are hard, allow the shit to hit the fan and breathe through it. Know that God or the universe is conspiring in your favor to make your dreams come true.
