Scott Ellis: Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host, Scott Ellis. This week we’re hanging out at the Sci-Tech Discovery Center making stuff. All right. We are here with Bob Gilkison. He is the manager of the Makerspace at the Sci-Tech Discovery Center. It’s your job to play.

Bob Gilkison: I know. Isn’t that amazing? It is fantastic. I love doing this stuff. We have quite a neat opportunity Raytheon has given us by donating money to outfit our Makerspace, and we have some of the coolest stuff you can find around the world.

Scott Ellis: We took a little tour before we sat down to talk. You guys have some awesome gear. We’ll get into that in a minute. First of all, tell us a little bit about how you got to be the guy who gets to come in and play every day and teach other people about having fun with these things.

Bob Gilkison: My education is electrical engineering. I worked in the industry for almost 20 years designing integrated circuits, as well as some control systems for commercial HVAC systems. A little bit broad variety, did some product development. Nerd through and through.

Scott Ellis: Welcome to the club.

Bob Gilkison: Exactly. I do love making things and working with my hands. What I found with the engineering was I sat at a desk all day staring at a computer and wondering what … I woke up and said, “This isn’t what I had in mind when I started as a kid dreaming about this stuff.” I started up a business called Newton’s Lab, which is a tinkering engineering school for kids. We’re going to be joined by Skye Bruce and former FC Dallas goalkeeper, Kevin Hartman, to talk about the upcoming Soccer Parenting Summit, and the importance of parents in their children’s soccer lives. Scott Ellis: Well, as you and I have discussed, Frisco is a pretty soccer-crazy town. So I’m excited to bring to our audience what it is you have going on. To begin with, we’re going to talk about the Summit in a minute, but to start with, your main business is soccerparenting.com. So tell us a little bit about, one, how did you get into that, and why is soccer parenting as a topic so important to people that are into soccer?

Skye Bruce: Sure. The mission of Soccer Parenting is to enhance every child’s youth soccer experience by engaging, and educating, and supporting, and even advocating for parents. I think that obviously we all – I’m a soccer parent myself – we all want our children to thrive, and to have the most incredible experience through sports that can help them become high-performing, engaging, happy adults.

I’m your host, Scott Ellis and this week, we’re here with Dr. Mark Barisa and we’re going to be talking to him a little about an upcoming talk he has at the Sci-Tech Discovery Center on concussions in sports. This is the conclusion of this years Chalk Talk series at the Sci-Tech Discovery Center. Scott Ellis: Good to have you here. First of all, what kind of a doctor are you?

Dr. Mark Barisa: I am a board certified clinical neuropsychologist. In essence, not a lot of people know what that is. It’s a psychologist that specializes in the brain and bring behavior relationships. We do assessment and treatment of injuries or illness that impact the brain and how that affect thinking as well as some behavioral abnormalities that can occur.

Cindy, welcome to the show, it’s good to have you here.

Cindy Asche: Good morning. It’s great to be here. Thanks so much for having me.

Scott Ellis: You bet. Thank you for coming out on a rainy day.

Cindy Asche: It was a little drizzing and damp today.

Scott Ellis: Yeah. I think by the time people hear this, it will be cleared up, but that’s okay.

Cindy Asche: It should be great.

Scott Ellis: You’re running for City Council, place 4.

Cindy Asche: I am.

Scott Ellis: They have gone to a run-off election.

Cindy Asche: Yes.

Scott Ellis: That means basically that in the first round, nobody got 50% plus 1 vote.

Cindy Asche: Correct.

Scott Ellis: The top 2 vote getters are now running the run-off on June 18th.

Cindy Asche: Yes. It’s kind of like Groundhog Day. We keep doing the same thing over and over.

Scott Ellis: You guys are ready for that to be over?

Cindy Asche: We are ready to be done, we really are.

Scott Ellis: Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host, Scott Ellis. In this episode, we are here visiting with Frisco City Council candidate, Bill Woodard. He is running for place four, and now into the runoff elections. Bill, welcome to the show. Good to have you here.

Bill Woodard: Thanks for having me, Scott. I appreciate it.

Scott Ellis: Why don’t we start with giving people a chance who maybe don’t know as much about you a little bit about your background and why you would be a good city councilman and what made you want to run?

Bill Woodard: First of all, I’m an 11-year resident of Frisco. I’ve been in the same house that entire time. Happily married to my wife, Laura. We met about eight years ago. We’ve been married for six now. We have three boys, one in elementary, middle, and high school. We’re spread out with schools. We are a blended family, which makes for a lot of interesting household dynamics with three boys. It’s a lot of fun. They’re real great kids.

I actually got involved with the city back in about 2008. Helped out during some of the elections that year. Started getting to know people. Volunteered for some things. Ended up chairing the Census Committee back in 2009/2010. Served on the Zoning Advisory Committee and the last two Charter Review Committees. For the most time, I’ve spent the last five and a half years on the Planning and Zoning Commission and I’ve chaired it for the last two.

I decided to run last summer, once John Keating announced that he was going to run for State House. Looking at the makeup of the Council, knowing that we were going to have a lot of turnover because of term limits and John leaving and the possibility of some of the other councilmen running for mayor, thought that it w

Scott Ellis: Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host, Scott Ellis, and today we are here with City Council place two candidate, Shona Huffman, running in the runoff elections that are coming up on June 18.

Shona, welcome to the show. It’s good to have you on the Frisco Podcast.

Shona Huffman: It’s great to be here. Good to talk with you.

Scott Ellis: Thank you for coming out today. You are running in place two for City Council.

Shona Huffman: That’s correct.

Scott Ellis: That is a seat being vacated by Jeff Cheney, correct?

Shona Huffman: Correct, Jeff Cheney. He is terming out of seat two.

Scott Ellis: The runoffs are on June 18. What that means is there was the regular election that already happened, nobody got 50% plus one vote.

Shona Huffman: Correct.

Scott Ellis: Although, I think you were fairly close.

Shona Huffman: Fairly close, we were in between, we were right around 49%. Very close.

Scott Ellis: Very close, but because nobody got 50% plus one we go to a runoff, so the top two vote getters get to keep going for a while.

Shona Huffman: We get to extend this journey for a little while longer, yes.

Scott Ellis: That’s going to happen. The voting is on June 18, and there’s early voting I think … When does that start?

Shona Huffman: Early voting is going to start on June 6, which is a Monday. It will be 8:00 to 5:00, June 6th through June 11th. That’s a Monday through a Saturday

I’m hesitant to tell people about it because it’s kind of my favorite little best kept secret of meeting places here in Frisco. This is the little Café/ Coffee Shop inside the Embassy Suite’s Hotel and it’s a great little meeting place. It’s always nice and quiet and not too much traffic in a nice environment. Happy to have them hosting us this morning. Terri, we are e just going to have a nice light conversation this morning. We are going to talk a little bit about the Elections and the race and what’s coming up with the run offs and some of the issues that are top of mind for you?

I’m going to let you queue it up and tell people what the Peacock Theater is and how did this even come about?

Randy Pitchford: The Peacock Theater is a private intimate setting theater for variety arts and live entertainment in Frisco, Texas. It sits about well maximum capacity is about 100 people and we get really interesting and awesome acts, that come in blow people’s minds.

Scott Ellis: I will attest to that. Wendy and I had the chance to go to the inaugural show and it was fantastic. You guys had some incredibly talented people there. One of those people also happens to be the creative director of the Peacock Theater who is going to be
