Scott:  Welcome to the Frisco podcast. We are glad to be back and our first guest on the reboot of the podcast is Esther Craven, board certified music therapist. She has a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology both from SMU. Esther works in a non-profit called My Possibilities, where they do a number of things where particular area is music therapy. We’re going to let her explain a little bit more about what that really is and how it helps people, but it is a common treatment for use with people with disabilities, such as autism or Down syndrome. It is often used for people who have had traumatic head or brain injuries, who may have had spina bifida, epilepsy or any number of other neurological diseases. Quite frankly I never fully knew or understood what music therapy was, how it worked, if it worked well. She’s going to get into all of that with us and it was a really interesting story and in particular, we wanted to share this because not only it’s insightful and educational but it’s the thing that may also help someone out there. This is definitely a community-focused effort, so we hope you guys enjoy it and we’re going to let Esther tell you all about life of a music therapist. Esther, thank you for joining us today. Scott: You work for a non-profit called My Possibilities, correct?

Esther: That’s right.

Scott: Tell us a little bit about what you guys do there.

Esther: Sure. My Possibilities is a non-profit in Plano, Texas that serves adults with disabilities. We provide continuing education for adults that are over the age of 18 for all of Collin County and all over DFW quite honestly. We serve about 300 of these adults and about a hundred … That’s 300 adults on a weekly basis and about 180 on a day-to-day basis. The Frisco podcast is back!

Hello Frisco, it’s been a while since we’ve chatted with you through the podcast. No, we didn’t give up on it or trash it or anything else. We just took a little hiatus and put most of our energy into rebuilding and redesigning the website. If you haven’t been out to the website recently, it’s got a completely new look and feel, it is highly optimized for mobile, it’s a very visual experience. We’ve added some features, and we’ve got a whole lot more stuff that’s going to be coming on the website in the near future.

This was really just rebuilding the platform upon which we run Lifestyle Frisco, getting that part down first so we’re excited to have that out the door and to be bringing the podcast back. We are going to change up the format of the podcast a little bit and probably talk about some different things and expand our horizons but we’re still going to stay very, very Frisco focused.

We are excited to announce that we have our first guest for the Frisco podcast 2.0 lined up next week and her name is Esther Craven and she’s going to be talking to us about music therapy.

We met Esther at a music event in Frisco, the Altius Quartet was playing in someone’s home, this was part of the open classical mic series. We hit it off with her, she had a really interesting story. She helps a lot of people in a lot of interesting ways using music. She is a board certified music therapist so I think you guys are going to enjoy her story a lot. Not only are you going to learn a thing or two, it’s very entertaining and you never know, it may be something that could be of great use to somebody you know or somebody you love.

The Frisco weekend roundups are still going on, we’re going to bring those back onto the podcast and give you the rundown of what’s happening every weekend. We’re looking forward to high school football season wrapping up here again before too long if you can believe it.

We’ll have Tim coming back on and doing the rundown of the football games and who’s looking good especially as we get into playoffs. Who’s got a shot to hopefully put Frisco on the map.

Spring’s still a little ways off but it will be here before you know it so we’re going to get ahead of the curve and introduce you to Frisco based Sprinkl who’s going to take away those headaches associated with the watering restrictions and knowing what days you can water on and how much you should water, and all that fun stuff.
