Earlier this summer, we united with hundreds of local businesses to declare racism a public health emergency in Columbus, Ohio. As a company, PENZONE is committed to using our own brand pillars to guide our own Inclusion + Diversity initiative. We’re in the thick of the work now and we are constantly learning, unlearning, and relearning so that we can contribute positively to this movement.
One of the organizations uniting our community against injustice and hate is Columbus Speaks, a call to action in response to George Floyd being killed by police. In this episode, Debbie sits down with Ty Phillips and Emily Phillips, co-founders of Columbus Speaks, to discuss how they’re creating a platform of advocacy and engagement for those voices that, far too often, go unheard. Our hope is that everyone listening today learns and grows, even if just a little bit, because we’ve learned that being open and willing to learn is the first step towards change.
Our sister company, L I T LIfe + Yoga, is partnering with Columbus Speaks to put on an incredible online event called Resilient Love: Yoga for Black Lives. All proceeds from this online community yoga event will benefit The Loveland Foundation, a non-profit focused on providing access to mental health treatment for women and girls in communities of color.

Just about a year ago, SŌW Plated opened its doors for a grand opening. SŌW brought a flavorful menu full of made-from-scratch, sustainably sourced food to the Columbus community, truly a celebration of food in its most natural state. And just last week, SŌW re-opened their dining room and covered patio as part of RestartOhio.
Co-founded by Sunny and John Fahlgren, SŌW is built atop three pillars: sustainable, organic, and wellness. Their food is “guaranteed to be sustainably sourced, 100 percent all-natural and USDA Certified Organic, whenever possible,” even striving to source “better than organic” produce from nearby Ohio farm operations that do not use pesticides for the items on EWG’s “Dirty Dozen” list.
But SŌW is also more than a restaurant. Sunny and John’s intention was to create “a mission-based, highly-innovative brand that makes transformative change in this community.” And this approach to creating beauty from the inside out is 100% in alignment with our goal to create beauty from the outside in! We want to not just serve the wonderful people in this community but make the community better for everyone in it.
That’s why we opted to provide plant-based and protein+ options when we rebranded as PENZONE — because we can’t truly achieve our mission if we aren’t doing our part to make organic, sustainable, and delicious food options available to our community.

We recorded this interview with Carmen Curtis, founder of AIReal Yoga, at LIT Life + Yoga in early March 2020. But due to the health crisis, economic shutdowns, and protests in support of Black Lives Matter over the last few months, we pivoted to both share pertinent health and safety information and allow space for other voices online.
Those problems aren’t magically solved — and we’re continuing to do our best to both ensure the health of our guests and support the BIPOC individuals who are in our community and members of our team — but we also want to celebrate opening the doors of our yoga studio and being able to see our community again.
This is all to say that we are so excited to finally share this conversation with you! Carmen is incredible and AIReal yoga is a truly unique offering in the yoga space, one that we’re proud to offer at LIT Life + Yoga. We’re also joined by Amy Patterson, a Luminary at LIT, to hear about how the Columbus community has embraced AIReal Yoga.
And we have an extra treat for all of you: during the week of June 22, we’ll be hosting an AIReal Yoga Pop-Up at PENZONE Polaris!! Amy will be teaching, along with our studio creative director Babajide. Keep your eyes on our schedule and on Instagram for more info: https://litlifeyoga.com/classes.

Ohio started re-opening some non-essential businesses in May. With the Responsible RestartOhio guidelines, we felt 100% about offering hair and nail services right away. When it came to skin care and massage, we didn’t quite feel ready to simultaneously provide the incredible service that you’ve come to expect at PENZONE and the conditions necessary to ensure both your safety and the safety of the PENZONE team.
So, we took a couple of weeks to take a breath, assess the situation, create a plan, and come up with new protocols before opening at the beginning of June. We are in this for the long haul. Your safety and our team’s safety come first.
In this episode, Debbie talks with two members of our Spa Innovation Team to discuss what changes we made and what you can expect when you come in for a facial or massage: Senior Master Esthetician Melody Kuck + Senior Master Massage Therapist Mary Schirg.

We’ve all gone through a lot over the last few months, and as states start to re-open, we’re all eager to go back to our normal self-care rituals and routines.
We understand that the appointment is important for every guest who comes through our doors, now more than ever — but we also understand that we need to do things differently to ensure your health and safety for the foreseeable future.
You will immediately see many of the health and safety standards we've put in place to keep you and our team safe. But we wanted to share this conversation with you to shout out some of our local partners and to explain what we’re doing in more detail, as well as what we’re doing that you won’t see but will ensure the best possible experience for you and every member of the PENZONE family.

Over the last few weeks, we have been missing all of your smiling faces and beautiful hair just as much as you’ve been missing your self-care and community hangouts. Our mission is true authentic beauty, and we try to lead and guide with integrity. So, today, we’re sharing at-home tips and tricks for your hair, skin, and nails from three PENZONE artists: Kyong and Sophia from PENZONE Dublin and Zeta from PENZONE Polaris.
We’re also joined by past guest Jena Huffman, Director of Marketing + Communications, who will share our quarantine initiative: #showyourroots.
You are beautiful, and we want to empower you to see yourself + love yourself just the way you are!

Stef Streb and Jules Ohlemacher both built successful businesses empowering women in their own way, Jules as an intuitive eating and body image coach and Stef as a body-positive photographer, before uniting forces to invite more women into this conversation about owning your body and living your best life. What started as a regular Girls Night (and an absolutely incredible body positive pool party) grew into a movement, community, and podcast called The Babesment.

Human connection is important in every aspect of our lives, but the social structures of the modern world aren't always set up to facilitate connection — especially in the extraordinary circumstances we currently find ourselves in during the coronavirus pandemic.
So we wanted to share this conversation with one of Ohio’s foremost mindfulness experts, Brandi Lust, who helped us create the new PENZONE concept and L I T Life + Yoga. Brandi is also the author of Myths of Being Human: Four paths to connect with what matters. Connecting with what matters has never been more important or more difficult, but Brandi has some great advice and mindfulness exercises that you can start doing while you listen to the episode.

If you’ve ever taken one of Babajide Ogunmola’s classes at L I T Life + Yoga, you would probably never have guessed that he resisted going to his yoga class...for a long time! But when he did hit the mat for the first time, it changed the direction of his life forever — even if he did fall out of child’s pose and blind himself with sweat.
And we are so happy for it because Babajide adds so much to our family at L I T and to all of the students who come through our doors!

After 50 years, we are still a family-owned business, and with every new hair artist that walks through our doors, our family gets a little bit bigger. We are proud of every member of our family and how they live the PENZONE mantra and pillars every day in our salons and spas. We truly believe that their passion and dedication is the foundation of our success.
We love having this opportunity to show off the people who make PENZONE so special — people like Joey Cordeiro, a hair artist working his magic in PENZONE Salon + Spa Short North.
