  • Nurturing Humility in Our Lives - Richard Foster & Brenda Quinn - 49 - FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

How much attention have you been giving to the virtue of humility in your life and in your ministry?  In this episode, I'm joined by Richard Foster and Brenda Quinn. Richard Foster is the Founder of Renovare. He is probably best known for the many books he's written on the topic of spiritual formation, including Streams of Living water, and Celebration of Discipline, which has been read by millions of people worldwide. His latest book is entitled Learning Humility. Brenda serves as a Pastor of Spiritual Formation, at Living Way Fellowship outside of Denver, Colorado. Together, Brenda, Richard and I explore how pastors and ministry leaders have some unique challenges when it comes to nurturing humility. Richard also shares some insights from his year long focus on humility, as he journeyed with Jesus, nature, and many great voices from across the history of the church.  Are you ready? Let's go.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Brenda Quinn on getting to know yourself: "What are my motivations? Who am I? Why do I do what I do? You know, being able to take a hard honest look at ourselves, to let the Holy Spirit reveal who we are, and why we do what we do. And that can be hard, it can be hard to be honest about who we are. But until we get to that place, I don't know that we can start entering into humility.”

Richard Foster on the importance of being teachable: “Let me give another word for humility. Teachability. In order to receive wisdom, I have to be teachable. I let Brenda teach, I let you know, we're all beginners in this we're learning a life of humility before God. And to be teachable, is such an essential feature. And now there's humility. Because we learn from others.”

Richard Foster on practicing humility: “Let's love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, our neighbors ourselves. And when we keep first things first, then these other things fall into place in their own time and their own way.”

  • Hope & Healing for Spiritual Abuse - Chuck DeGroat - 47 - FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

In an era of cynicism and cancel culture, how can our local churches provide hope and healing for those who've experienced emotional and spiritual abuse? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Chuck DeGroat, a licensed therapist and spiritual director, who serves as professor of Counseling and Christian Spirituality at Western Theological Seminary. Chuck has written a number of books, including When Narcissism Comes to Church. Together, Chuck and Jason begin by looking at how narcissism in churches and church leaders has been addressed in recent history, especially the past few years. Then, they explore how the local church can minister to survivors of emotional and spiritual abuse.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Chuck DeGroat on how anxiety can play out for ministry leaders who are increasing in their influence and authority: "As you climb the ladder anxiety grows and with that, you become more self-protective and insulated, and you're more apt in situations like that to bully out of your own anxiety."

Chuck DeGroat on shifting from a solitary focus of "getting justice" to working on one's personal healing: "I did want to provide a vision for restoration, recovery, transformation, healing and wholeness for people who have experienced abuse, who have been victimized, who are survivors, who have experienced trauma, and who need to make that shift.... there are processes that we need to engage in order to sort of get justice. But I had to do the work of shifting to: I'm really hurting. And even though some things have been resolved out here, it's still unresolved within me. So what's the work that I need to do to heal and to become whole?"

Chuck DeGroat on how churches can respond to emotional and spiritual abuse: "Can we create the kind of safety and space for people to come and merely be able to tell their stories and be heard...? And then can we set up really good healthy processes, and not just move to peacemaking quickly, but really good processes that will sort of look at these things carefully, investigate carefully, so that we can come to some sort of resolution, maybe even some sort of restoration?"

  • Facing Regret & Hurt in Ministry - Scott Sauls - 45 - FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

As pastors and ministry leaders, how do we address in a healthy way, our own feelings of regret, pain, shame, even our feelings of being a hypocrite, because we know where we fall short, while others are placing us on a pedestal? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Scott Sauls, pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Scott has written six books, including his latest, Beautiful People Don't Just Happen. Together, Scott and Jason look at our tendency to emphasize the positive while minimizing the pain and suffering in our own lives and ministry, even though it's in those places where God does His most transformative work. Scott also shares some of his personal struggles with anxiety and depression as a pastor, and what God has taught him through those experiences.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Scott Sauls on acknowledging the reality that ministry is challenging: "The job that we've been called to do is one that assumes we're going to be under attack at all times, because the enemy of our soul is also the enemy of what we're trying to do as we participate in the work of Jesus on the front lines of ministry."

Scott Sauls on the importance of having relationships where we can be ministered to: "I highly recommend, you know, a professional safe space where you don't have to be the pro. That's the challenge for pastors is, wherever we show up, you know, you can't blame people, but they, they look at us, you know, they expect us to be the most... together person in the room, even when we're kind of falling apart and, and on the inside. And so we need a place where we can show up and the arrangement is understood by everybody that we are actually the weakest person in the room and need tending and ministering to. "

Scott Sauls on 21st-century cancel culture and ministry: "There's also freedom in failing, you know. 21st-century cancel culture doesn't allow pastors to fail, but the Bible does. I mean I wonder how long, you know, King David would have lasted in the current climate. I wonder if there would have been any possibility of redemption of His ministry."
