As pastors and ministry leaders, we often come alongside and minister to others when they receive heartbreaking news. But what happens when we receive a challenging medical diagnosis, either for ourselves or for someone in our immediate family? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Percy McCray. Percy has an incredibly unique pastoral calling. As an ordained minister, he has served for nearly 30 years in the cancer care space. He provides leadership to the entire pastoral care team that serves at all five of the hospitals for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Together, Percy and Jason explore some of the unique challenges that we experience as ministry leaders when we receive a tough health diagnosis. They also look at how God can redeem some of these health issues and open doors to new ministry opportunities.

Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Percy McCray on the dangers of ministry leaders keeping their medical diagnoses secret: "Many ministry leaders, in my opinion, have made the mistake of trying to keep their cancer diagnosis a secret, and keep that quiet. And then as things progressed, particularly if things get a little bit shaky, where there's an obvious dynamic of something going on, now, you've got to figure out a way to unpack that to your congregation, or to individuals who love you, and who are going to be caught off guard, and they're going to be stunned."
Percy McCray on preparing ourselves for a difficult health crisis: "We simply were not mentally, emotionally prepared for the rigors and for the dynamics of significant or serious health challenges within our faith construct"
Percy McCray on our example as ministry leaders as we experience a health crisis: "There are times that we are challenged as spiritual leaders, and to a certain extent, we are to be examples to those that are watching us on how to walk and fight the good fight of faith, good, bad or indifferent."

Have you ever wondered why sometimes we overcomplicate the process of growing and developing as a ministry leader? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Ryan Leak. Ryan is an executive coach who has worked with Fortune 500 companies, professional athletes, churches and ministry leaders across the country. Ryan is a USA Today best-selling author, and his latest book, entitled Leveling Up, has just released. Together, Ryan and Jason look at some of the challenges that pastors experience when it comes to self-leadership. And then we explore some simple, yet very meaningful, ways that we can grow and develop on both the front stage and backstage of our life and ministry.
Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network
Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Ryan Leak on self-leadership and honesty: "If a pastor doesn't lead themselves well, I don't think that they can lead a congregation well. It starts with us looking in the mirror, and being willing to be honest about who we are."
Ryan Leak on accountability: "If there's something that we're doing that we can't share with the congregation, that's probably a clear sign that we're doing something wrong."
Ryan Leak on pastoral loneliness: "What I've never seen on a pastoral job description is: be prepared to be lonely. Nobody says that…. So you're just not prepared for that level of loneliness that you experience."

As ministry leaders, when our hopes have been dashed, or we find ourselves experiencing a personal crisis of faith, it can be very challenging to navigate through those times. Oftentimes we will turn to disillusionment, deconstruction, or even despair. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by James Choung, Vice President of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and author of Longing for Revival. Together, James and Jason explore how God actually invites us into these challenging spaces, and how we can position ourselves with a posture of invitation and expectancy, so we can experience personal revival and tremendous spiritual growth.
Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network
Some key takeaways from this conversation:
James Choung on preparing ourselves for personal revival: "We know that Jesus is with us. That's the promise we have from Genesis to Revelation. We know he's with us. And my question is, what do you sense God is saying to you in this moment?"
James Choung on killing expectations and raising expectancy: "Expectations say, unless God shows up for me in this particular way, unless my church grows, unless, like, people are enamored with my teaching, unless there's something that's happening in a particular way, then God is not good or he's not with me. Right? What expectancy says, it doesn't matter how God shows up, I trust in His character. And I will trust him, what he wants to do, right? Expectation says unless it shows up the way I'm praying for it, then God is not good. He's not with me. Where expectancy says, God, you can answer that prayer any way you want. I'm open to your will. Because I trust your love and goodness and beauty, that there's a reason to hope that you'll turn all things for the good of those who love you. But it doesn't mean it has to happen my way. And until we get there, then I think we become the bottleneck to what God might want to do through us."
James Choung on deconstruction: "The thing we have is Jesus, Emmanuel, God is with us. So that gives us the grace then to go through that deconstruction, knowing that there's something on the other side, that's full of wonder and beauty and goodness."

Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Jim Cymbala on politics derailing a local church: "A lot of ministers and lay people are not interested in building the Church. They're interested in building their political party up and gaining power… It's really tragic."
Jim Cymbala on the commitment of the Church to reach everyone who is far from God: "I told some pastors in Florida listen, if you don't want black or white, or Latino, or poor, or gay, or straight, or homeless, if you don't want them in your church, just please, for the sake of honesty and the sake of Christ, take the cross down off your building, don't wait till Antifa comes, tear it down, because that's a disgrace to the cause of Christ."
Jim Cymbala on why many local churches are not making a gospel impact: "We've been leaning on our own understanding, and we're trusting in cleverness, rather than the anointing of the Holy Spirit."

As ministers we have a heart to encourage, to bless, and to engage with people relationally. However, if we're not careful, we can find ourselves emotionally drained and mentally fatigued if we are not setting healthy boundaries, but the question is, how do we set good boundaries and continue to serve those around us? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Lysa TerKeurst. Lysa is the president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, has written 25 books, including her latest Good Boundaries and Goodbyes. Together, Lysa and Jason discuss how setting good boundaries actually helps us live more fully into the calling that God has on our lives to serve and to minister.
Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network
Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Lysa TerKeurst on healthy people and healthy boundaries: "Healthy people like healthy boundaries. They're not threatened by them and they're not put off by them. They accept them because they recognize their own limitations, and therefore they can respect your limitations.”
Lysa TerKeurst on the reality of people-pleasing: " I used to say, I struggle with people-pleasing, but the reality is, I'm not struggling because I'm trying to keep other people happy. I'm struggling because I fear if I don't keep them happy, then I will lose something that they are giving me. And where the Lord really challenged me is that I will always desperately want to get from another person what I fear I will never get from God."
Lysa TerKeurst on assessing our emotional health as ministry leaders: "Sometimes the people we're doing ministry for recognize their blindness, and we don't. And so we have to be responsible to get some professional insight about our own health as well. And this does not mean that you're a bad leader, it doesn't mean that you're less of a Christian. But some of the most, I guess, unhealthy situations that I've ever experienced a ministry leader being in is when they're very high on spiritual health, but very low on their emotional health.... You can teach people spiritual principles, but if your emotional health isn't where it needs to be, you cannot possibly model how to live that out in healthy ways."

There is something special, something powerful, something beautiful about the concept of Sabbath rest. And yet, as pastors and ministry leaders, it often feels just outside of our grasp. It's something we're happy to teach about and share with others, but something that is challenging for us to experience fully in our own lives. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Ruth Haley Barton, founder of the Transforming Center, and author of numerous books, including Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership, Sacred Rhythms, and her latest, Embracing Rhythms of Work and Rest. Together, Ruth and Jason explore the spiritual reality of rhythm in our lives, and look at the idea of Sabbath in a way that is accessible for pastors and ministry leaders just like you.
Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network
Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Ruth Haley Barton on the relationship between goodness and rhythm: "The goodness is in the rhythm… the Sabbath is one of the main ways that God has given to us to actually establish sane rhythms of work and rest"
Ruth Haley Barton on the danger of getting out of a Sabbath rhythm: "When we do get out of rhythm, we are functioning beyond human limits. And when that happens, the human person can't sustain a life of living beyond human limits. We can't tolerate it in the body, but also not in the mind, mentally, we're not as fresh and clear. And then in the soul, we get very, very out of touch with God in the depths of our being and out of touch with who we are in God, and what God is calling us to do. And so it can be quite dangerous for a person to live for very long outside of the human, God-ordained rhythms that we've been created to live within."

How does our self-awareness relate to our health in life and in ministry? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Steven Chandler, pastor of Union Church, and author of Stop Waiting for Permission. Together, Steven and Jason look at the value of being honest with ourselves about our own brokenness, our flaws, and our hangups, and how that opens the door for God to do even more in our lives and through our ministries.

------------
Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Stephen Chandler on ministry leaders taking time away from the church: “Here's what fear will say, fear will say if I step away from that church, it'll decrease. People won't get saved, the money will go down, leaders won't have vision and all that other goods. Jason, you know what happens every time I step away? Dude, the giving goes up, people get saved, people get baptized, and I start looking like, man, maybe I was the problem the whole time. Maybe it'd be a great church if I didn't come back. I think it's just a supernatural confirmation from God. I'm choosing to use you, but I don't need you.”
Stephen Chandler on having people around you who will speak into your life: “This board is made up of brothers and fathers. Fathers are the ones I'm intimidated by. Brothers are the ones that have my back. And you need both in your life. You need fathers that, you know, hey, they will correct me. They will sit me down if need be and I honor that. But I also need brothers, that can say, hey, I'm not trending in the right direction. And I need an arm around the shoulder, not a foot in the pants. I need an arm around the shoulder of hey, man, you're doing better than you think you are.”
Stephen Chandler on the importance of self-awareness for ministry leaders: "The sooner that we acknowledge that our hearts were wounded before we ever became pastors, and that our motives are never 100% pure, then we can begin to address the reality of our heart, bring it to Jesus, bring it to trusted colleagues, and start the process of healing so that we can lead and have aspirations and ambition from a healthy place instead of from an unhealthy place."

The truth is that we may be derailing our ministries without even realizing it because we are unaware of some of our less-than-healthy habits, attitudes, and baggage. In this conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Michael McKenzie. Michael is an ordained pastor, a licensed professional counselor, the executive director of Marble Retreat, and the author of Don't Blow Up Your Ministry. Together, Michael and Jason explore some surprising ways that we can self-sabotage our ministries. They also provide hope by highlighting some healthy habits and practices that ministry leaders can engage in, so they can give God, their families, and their ministries their absolute best.
Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network
Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Michael MacKenzie on pastors needing safe spaces to share their struggles: "A lot of pastors are wrestling and struggling, but they don't know where to go, who to talk to, where it would be safe to begin to share what they're going through."
Michael MacKenzie on the need for taking time to reflect: "I think it's huge just to step out of your life, sometimes for two, three days, partly for the purpose of looking at your life, and saying, How am I doing? How am I doing? You know, how am I feeling? Do I feel full? Or do I feel empty? Do I feel rejuvenated? Or do I feel drained? Do I feel peace? Or do I feel agitated? I mean, what's going on and then begin starting to ask the questions. Okay, Where's that coming from? What's causing that underneath? So you can go down another layer?"
Michael MacKenzie on prioritizes the backstage of life in ministry: "One of the things that I find that we need to be careful of in this journey is, okay, I make ministry a priority, and it needs to be a priority. But do I make it such a priority that I don't have the time, energy, focus to put on these other important things like my marriage, my family responsibilities, even my own care?"

As ministry leaders, we can often focus on building a platform and making the biggest impact possible without first and continuously, allowing Jesus to establish value and build character in our own lives. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dr. Derwin Gray, founding and lead pastor of Transformation Church, just south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Together, Derwin and Jason look at the priorities and the values that Jesus wants to establish in your life. And then Derwin gives a backstage peek into the spiritual disciplines that he finds most vital in helping sustain a thriving life and ministry.

Derwin Gray on knowing where your true value lies: "I'm not a church leader, first. I'm not a pastor, first. I'm not an author, first, I'm not a husband, first. I'm not a father, first. I'm not a fisherman, first. First and foremost, I am a beloved in Christ Jesus, that Jesus is the sum total of everything I could ever hope to be."
Derwin Gray on prioritizing your family in ministry: "If you're married, only second to Jesus, second to Jesus is your spouse. Our spouses should not feel like we're having an affair with ministry.... Your spouse should not feel like you're giving your best energy to your staff and local church. I want my family to get my best."
Derwin Gray on understanding the proper place of ministry as a pastor: "If we're not careful, we will try to use ministry to heal our trauma. And we need to continue to sit at Jesus's feet and give Him our trauma, give him our past, give him our pain. That's called sanctification. But what happens a lot of times, is you have gifted people, and people 'ah, you're a great preacher. You're great at this. You're great at that.' And we think that the ministry is what's healing us. I heard it once said this this way, do not allow ministry for Jesus to destroy the ministry of Jesus in you."
