  • Care for Pastors & Ministry Leaders - Thad Austin - 24 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

As pastors and ministry leaders, we feel called to support and care for others. Yet oftentimes, we do not accept that same support and care for ourselves. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dr. Thad Austin. Thad is a senior director at the Ormond Center at Duke Divinity, and he and his team have completed a research study looking at caring for pastors and ministry leaders. Today, Thad and Jason look at some of the theological and biblical underpinnings of caring for clergy, as well as some of the roadblocks that hinder ministry leaders from accepting the care that can help their lives and ministries thrive.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Thad Austin on the source of some of the problems we are facing today in the Church: "One of the reasons why we have some of the problems we have in the church is because people are pulling not from a place of fullness and abundance, but instead, from a very, very dry place."

Thad Austin on the importance of the backstage, or personal well-being, of ministry leaders: "It's really important to think about the front stage kind of persona, and the way that that sometimes, if it's not backed up by a deep spiritual well, that it actually creates a disingenuous form of ministry. This is the reason why Jesus took time away. This is the reason why he called for his disciples to take time away."

Thad Austin on the long-standing tradition of supporting ministry leaders: "The way that we support religious leaders today is actually something that's very, very old, and it's a continuation of a long narrative that stretches all through the Early Church, through the Reformation era, to the modern-day experience."

  • Protecting Your Life & Ministry from Burnout - Juanita Campbell Rasmus - 23 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

In ministry, what are we supposed to do when we feel the bottom has fallen out of our lives? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Juanita Campbell Rasmus as she shares from her own experience of what she calls "the Crash" and what her counselor calls a major depressive episode. Juanita is a pastor, a spiritual director, a nonprofit founder and a writer. Together, Jason and Juanita look at some of the warning signs that we, as pastors and ministry leaders, need to be on the lookout for to make sure we don't spread ourselves too thin. Juanita also shares some important practices that can help center us in Christ and help us avoid burnout, or maybe tapping out of ministry altogether.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Juanita Campbell Rasmus on a healthy understanding of sacrifice as ministry leaders: "Sacrifice means understanding our assignment, because the sacrifice at times is going to be the sacrifice of saying no when the crowd wants us to say yes.... Sacrifice for us, as leaders, means we invest enough time with God that we're able to stand in the places that are uncomfortable."

Juanita Campbell Rasmus on making time for rest and recreation: "When you don't schedule time for fun and play, for recreation, in whatever ways that are life-giving to you, you're setting yourself up for fall, for disappointment certainly, and in my case, a diagnosis"

Juanita Campbell Rasmus on ministering with a mental health diagnosis: "What I came to realize in the course of learning to live with a mental health diagnosis, learning to live with panic attacks, is recognizing that I was going to need a team to help me get to a place of orientation after the rug had literally been pulled from under my feet."

  • Overcoming Overwhelm & Unlocking Resilience in Ministry - Daniel Fusco - 22 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

How can we overcome the overwhelm that so often occurs in ministry, and be healthy and effective in our calling? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Daniel Fusco, author, church planter, and lead pastor of Crossroads Community Church in Vancouver, Washington. Together, Daniel and Jason explore the idea of unlocking resiliency, embracing perseverance and grit in ministry, in such a way that it doesn't tip over into an unhealthy state of exhaustion and overload.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Daniel Fusco on being willing to try new things for the Gospel: "A lot of it is just being willing to say, going forward, I need to rely upon the things that I know about who God is, what the Word says that he is, like, none, none of that's going to change, but how we're going to get at reaching people who are outside of the Church, that has to change because the things that we did 10 years ago aren't necessarily effective now. And because Jesus is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance, we have to just embrace like, we're going to just try things, we're going to take a step."

Daniel Fusco on the source of resiliency in ministry: "One of the important things for pastors is to hang out with Jesus, not just sermon prep, not just writing the bulletin blurb from the pastor. No, it's like you spending time with Jesus spending time in prayer, that's essential for you to do the work that you do."

Daniel Fusco on being a healthy pastor: "‘God, I want to have as much energy as I can to get at your work in the most beautiful and life-giving way possible' and anything that kind of diminishes that, I need to step away from it because what we're doing is so important that it needs healthy shepherds. You know, our world, as it becomes more unhealthy, we need to be healthier than we've ever been. We need to have more clarity of thought, we need to have more emotional bandwidth to be able to walk with people through really hard things."

  • How to Reboot the Discipleship Culture in Your Church - Dennis Allen - 21 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

Every pastor in every local church would love to become more effective at disciple-making. Yet we do not always recognize those things that are hindering us from doing so. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dennis Allen. Dennis is a devoted Christ-follower, having served in local church leadership his entire adult life. He's an alumnus of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, at Oxford in the UK. He's been the CEO of both national and international businesses. He's even been an F-15 fighter pilot. But above all, Dennis loves Jesus and His Church. Together, Jason and Dennis look at some of the causes of this disciple dilemma. They also share some practical steps that you can take right now to help shift your church and foster a culture of effective disciple-making.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Dennis Allen on mission vs metrics in ministry: "If you do not understand your mission, which I'm going to claim as Matthew 28:19, go therefore into all of the nationalities, the ethnos around you, and make disciples, progression of yourself and the people around you non-believers and believers. If you don't get your mission right, the metrics will own you… If you really understand what your mission is, the metrics are nice conversation pieces for a minority of your consideration in the journey."

Dennis Allen on the need to address how we approach discipleship: "The reality for us is we need to change up, in the leadership model of our churches, the way we're trying to do discipling. We're doing it the way businesses do it, not the way the Bible wants us to do it."

Dennis Allen on the unique purpose God has for every pastor and every church "You personally have been equipped with an identity in Christ, you have been given beautiful, unique giftings for the time and the place that you are in, and God has a purpose and a destiny for you as a pastor"

  • Pastors, Patriots & Politics: Ministry in Divisive Times - Paul D. Miller - 20 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

As pastors and ministry leaders, how do we engage in the political arena in a way that is productive, honors God, and aligns with the way of Jesus? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dr. Paul Miller. Paul is a devoted Christ-follower, a veteran who has served our country in a variety of capacities. He's currently a professor at Georgetown University. He's written several books, including The Religion of American Greatness. Together they explore patriotism, Christian Nationalism, politics in general, and what it looks like to minister in the midst of all these tensions in which we find ourselves today.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Paul D. Miller on being thoughtful as Christians about political agendas: "When the Bible tells us to take captive every thought, and to test for truth, to seek wisdom and understanding, I think all that applies to our political lives as well. And that means we have to be on guard against those who would seek to hijack us or our movement, or our churches, we have to be on guard against those who would make a direct appeal to us, for our power, or to be our protector or defender. There are good ways for Christians to be involved in politics and to work for justice and flourishing for all, but there are some dangers in making ourselves vulnerable to those who would exploit us."

Paul D. Miller on our role as Christians in the public square: "Christendom is not the point of Christianity, right? Jesus didn't come in order for us to build a society that feigned outward obedience to Christian cultural norms. He came to inaugurate his kingdom, which he will consummate and will make real when he returns, we're not the ones who build His kingdom. We might, insofar as we act as citizens of his kingdom today, be foreshadowings or foretastes of it, and that's a good thing. But Jesus' kingdom doesn't need our help, and it will come about with or without us. That means that our agenda in the public square isn't building Christian society, it is building peace and justice."

  • We All Crave Control: Avoiding Anxiety & Pastor Burnout - Sharon Hodde Miller - 19 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

As ministry leaders, most of us aren't power hungry, over-controlling pastors or making the latest news headlines. But as humans, all of us can gravitate toward a desire to control. And as pastors, we often want to control how others perceive us, our ministries, and even our families. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Sharon Hodde Miller. Sharon is a teaching pastor who, along with her husband, planted Bright City Church in Durham, North Carolina. Sharon has also written a number of books, including her latest, The Cost of Control. Today, they discuss our cravings for control, and look at healthy ways to avoid anxiety, broken relationships, and even pastor burnout.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Sharon Hodde Miller on not placing more on yourself as a pastor than Jesus does: "We're not responsible for the outcome. Whatever happens with our people, whatever happens with our church, we are to be faithful stewards, and cast out that seed, but we cannot bring the growth."

Sharon Hodde Miller on recognizing hidden sin in your life: "If you are unwilling to share openly with someone who does not have the power to fire you.... If you are unwilling to share what is going on truthfully, with that person, I would say that is a red flag that this has entered into the territory of hiding instead of privacy”

Sharon Hodde Miller on the discouragement of people in your church thinking badly of you: "That is so painful, when you have earnestly and humbly and thoughtfully, and prayerfully, made these decisions, to the best of your ability, knowing that not everyone is going to agree and then to be accused of being all the things that people have probably been called, and by people that you trusted. You know, by people that you thought you were going to be doing this forever, you thought you were on mission together, you thought you understood the gospel the same way, you thought you were both submitting yourselves to God's Word, and then to suddenly be accused of abandoning Christ or whatever."

  • How the Holy Spirit Empowers Your Life and Ministry - Max Lucado - FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

What are some practical ways that the Holy Spirit engages our lives and empowers our ministries, and how can we experience more of that blessing? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by dedicated pastor, best-selling author, and devoted Christ-follower, Max Lucado, as they explore the amazing power, strength, purpose, and blessing of the Holy Spirit.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Max Lucado on facing pastoral burnout: "Little by little, I began to just harden, just harden. I found myself unresponsive. My compassion level began to disappear. My sympathy began to evaporate. And then I couldn't sleep.... So at the age of 35, I was a classic case of pastoral burnout.... The church was growing, or at least healthy. But the demands were far too many, or I did not know how to put up boundaries...I was just a mess."

Max Lucado on trusting the Holy Spirit in ministry: "I don't panic anymore. I don't get anxious. I really don't. I used to. I used to, and I used to think it was up to me. But now I'm convinced that the Holy Spirit will bring to remembrance what I need. Why? Because he's my paraclete. He's my counselor, he's my comforter."

Max Lucado on how the Holy Spirit is key to all of life and ministry: “I think maybe my only job is today, just to walk with the Holy Spirit…. and if I make that my primary job, everything else will fall into place.”

  • How to Address Conflict Among Leaders Before it Gets Toxic - Chris Sonksen - 17 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

As pastors and ministry leaders we all know that, at times, disunity, misalignment, and conflict can ripple beneath the surface of our leadership teams, whether it's paid staff, church board members, elders, or key volunteers. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Chris Sonksen, pastor, author, and ministry coach, as they look at practical ways to address these subtle conflicts before they grow, and become toxic and painful for your church and your ministries.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Chris Sonksen on leadership insecurity: "Insecurity shows up when we are secretly threatened by other people's talent or we're secretly happy when other people fail. That's a dangerous place to be."

Chris Sonksen on where disunity usually is found in the church: "We've got to fight to be healthy, but we also need to realize that most of the time, it is not seven or eight layers deep into the church where the problem will be found. It's usually in that top one or two tier of leadership, where there is some toxic behavior where disunity start showing up, and ultimately where the problems occur.”

Chris Sonksen on artificial harmony: "Artificial harmony is when we know there's a little bit of an issue between that staff member and that leader, that leader and that volunteer, or the pastor and that board member, whatever the combination is… We know that there's a little bit of a problem, but we don't ever deal with it."

Chris Sonksen on addressing subtle conflict before it grows: "In the conversation you have, the strength is in your straightforwardness, but it's brought in a gentle way. 'I've been noticing something. This is what I'm seeing...can you speak into it?' You're direct. But you're gentle. It's a gentle strength. You're not hem-hawing, it's a gentle strength.”

  • Leading through Hot-button Issues in Ministry - Jimmy Dodd - 16 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

In the world in which we live, there are so many external crises and policies and issues that people get really passionate about. The challenge for us as ministry leaders is, how do we address these issues in a way in which we do not contribute to the divisiveness, nor do we come across as being dismissive. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Jimmy Dodd, the founder of PastorServe, as they look at practical ways to address these hot button issues in a way that keeps us from becoming distracted from the heart and the hope of Jesus and His gospel.

Some key takeaways from this conversation:

Jimmy Dodd on having a global perspective: "There are three things that the majority of the world does not have. If you have these three things, you're rich....If you have choices every day, you're rich....If you just have basic privacy, if there is a place where you can go to be alone, you're rich. Most of the world does not have a place to go just to be alone....And then third, if you just have basic opportunity, you're rich."

Jimmy Dodd on our response to the recent Roe v Wade decision: "It's great, I think, if you have joy over the big decision and such, but you have to make sure that your joy is dwarfed by your passion to care for those who will be most impacted by this”

Jimmy Dodd on stepping up and serving in a post-Roe v Wade world: "You have to find some place to help and serve.... CarePortal.org is a great place to go to be involved in foster care, because it's a way for you to practically meet foster care needs, because there are needs everywhere.... So if you think, 'well, I probably can't take in a foster kid, but I could buy a bed for a foster kid.' Okay, that's a great way to do it."

  • A Simple Solution to the Comparison Trap - Heather Thompson Day - 15 FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye

It's easy, in fact, it's human, for us to compare ourselves and our ministries to the ministries of others around us. And although it's human, it's not always healthy. In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by professor and author Heather Thompson Day, as they explore what it looks like to embrace “today,” to faithfully and fully live into what God has for us today, and the incredible impact that has, not only on our lives, but on the lives of those around us.

Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network

Some key takeaways from this conversation:
Heather Thompson Day on being fully present to what God has for you in the moment: "I thought my calling started when something better came. And I robbed myself and I robbed the people around me and I robbed God of what he had called me to, in that moment. And so I've started this journey of just being fully present in wherever I am, and believing that I'm here on purpose."

Heather Thompson Day on being faithful to where God has you right now: "The only moment we have is right now, It is always your turn to start living your life. And there's things you can do right where you are, when you start being faithful with what God has put in your hand, rather than looking at at what he hasn't."

Heather Thompson Day on introducing a hurting world to God: "When the world says, 'Where is God?', it is not an indictment on God, it is an indictment on his people. God is invisible, because he chooses to be seen through his people, his image bearers. So if we aren't revealing the character of God, and the answers of God in a broken world, we are no longer fulfilling our end of the bargain, that is not on Him, that is on us."
