Today, we are going to discuss what most of us have experienced, “Being The Only One” with our guest, Amber Jenae. What do we mean when we say “Being The Only One”? We mean being the only black person in a work environment, in your position, or at the decision table. There are so many internal and external battles that we have to deal with when we are the only ones. Isolation, imposter syndrome, discrimination are just a few to name. It is basically inevitable for most of us to have experienced this lonely feeling especially in corporate America which is synonymous with white America.
Amber Jenae resides in Northeast Ohio with her toddler son. Amber Jenae attended Thiel College and received a bachelor’s in Business Administration (Accounting). While at Thiel College she played Women’s Basketball and later became a Hall of Fame Inductee. She has been a high school girl’s basketball coach and recently an official for the sport. She serves as the President and Vice President on local community school boards. She’s volunteered as a mentor and community organizer. Amber Jenae has an MPA (Masters of Public Administration). She’s worked in Insurance, IT and most recently government.
Amber Jenae believes it is important to discuss being the only one because she herself has been in that position since middle school age and feels discussing it will outline the obstacles and discuss maneuverability for black women.
