Grit and Perseverance are words you don’t hear quite often as an adult. Our ears and minds may have been flooded with these words while growing up from our teachers, coaches, and parents. However, as we have headed down our unique paths into adulthood, grit and perseverance have taken a back seat to other modern-day buzzwords, such as intentional, growth hack, and pivot. We wanted to focus on the power of grit and perseverance for any full-time black woman wondering if they have what it takes to not only dream but dare to take the risk of doing it.
The pressure to accomplish a great feat each and every day is not realistic. The true currency of any journey is the many steps taken to reach your goal. The pain and uncertainty will either make or break you. We wanted to speak to a superhero today to show you all that you too can make it to your own destination land one day. The power of grit and perseverance are real.
Syreeta DeFrance-Poindexter is an Attorney who works within the Complex Litigation Department of a law firm based in Ohio. She has been a member of the opioid team which played a key role in recent opioid litigations. Before going to law school, Syreeta worked as a Case Manager for a corrections association. While working at the corrections association, Syreeta noticed first-hand the disparities that residents faced due to not having proper legal representation. Witnessing the disparities motivated her to pursue her Juris Doctor(JD). Syreeta graduated Cum Laude in the top 20% of her graduating class from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and was subsequently admitted to the Ohio State Bar.
Syreeta loves to cook and she loves to spend her free time traveling with her two sons and her husband. She loves people and if she could she would meet everybody in the world at least once.

Erika Stallings wrote an interesting articled titled, “When Black Women Go From Office Pet To Office Threat.” The article details the traumatic transition professional black women experiences from being adored and guided early in our career to being corporately marginalized and sabotaged once we attempt to establish a name for ourselves. In other words, you go from being everyone’s favorite, i.e. “Office Pet” until you show some ambition and independence then you roughly transition into the Karen/Jeff enemy #1, i.e. “Office Threat.”
The article was extremely telling and relatable so we wanted to discuss how you can ensure you’re not coddled into being the Office Pet, soon to be Office Threat cycle within a new work environment.

To be educated, gainfully employed, and determined are all things adults aspire to have in their lives. However, when you are black, in most cases, not all, it can be a burden of a blessing.
Latesha Byrd, Career Coach (@Latesha_Byrd) recently tweeted:
“I feel this immense pressure to build generational wealth for my family, knowing that nothing has been passed down to me and I have to do it from scratch. What a burden. I’m excited and motivated - but there’s pressure nonetheless.”
Many of us have the same dream but we don’t necessarily know how to reach it. That’s why we wanted to dedicate today’s episode to the black millennial dream of building generational wealth. We don’t work just for food, shelter, cars, and clothes. We also work to receive an income so we can build legacies, not liabilities for our present and future families.

Today, we want to discuss how in recent years more black women are finally receiving their shine for their tremendous contributions to the American political scene. With our special guest Jennifer Blemur, we talk about politics, the role of black women and the impact of both.
Committed to advancing public welfare, Jennifer Blemur is the State Caucus Network Director for Millennial Action Project. Her goal in working in state policy is to ensure that elected officials not only know what's happening in their communities but are equipped with sensible legislative solutions. Collaborating with elected officials to create transformative change is core to Jennifer's belief that government can effectively meet the needs of its people.
Jennifer previously served as the Director of the Women Legislators’ Lobby (WiLL), a program of Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND). Her work in state policy began with the National Black Caucus of State Legislators where she worked as Policy Associate and Legal Counsel writing policy articles and toolkits for legislators. A licensed attorney living in the District of Columbia, Jennifer is a graduate of the David A. Clarke School of Law, a native New Yorker, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and a first-generation Haitian-American.

Sometimes colleagues become a little more relaxed when in their own environment, which allows implicit bias to become more apparent. Others find it easier to unleash their true nature when behind a screen. Either way, it becomes clear that these emotional ambushes over zoom calls or via email can turn your safe haven into a war zone. While it’s easy to side step and avoid direct confrontation when in the office, it’s quite different when it becomes inescapable due to the presence of technology that makes working from home possible.
