  • #200 - The Decor Printers Dilemma: A journey of innovation in digital decor, With Robert Bierfeund, COO, Interprint

    Send us Fan Mail

Robert Bierfreund is the COO of Interprint, a leading global company specializing in decor printing and innovative surface designs for materials used in interior design and furniture manufacturing. With over 1,500 employees across nine production facilities worldwide, Interprint focuses on developing and producing high-quality decorative materials commonly used for furniture surfaces, flooring, and other interior solutions.

As a pioneer in the adoption and integration of digital printing technology, Interprint has faced a range of challenges. In this discussion, we explore these challenges—not only from a technical perspective but also from a cultural one. Robert's candid approach allows him to share both the struggles and successes of the transition, offering valuable lessons for others looking to incorporate digital technology into traditional analogue production.

We examine whether the real issue lies in the technology itself, or rather in cultural factors such as people’s resistance to change and organizational inflexibility. How can leadership play a role in overcoming these obstacles? And why has it taken so long for digital printing to gain a foothold in the decor industry, even though many of the technical barriers have already been resolved?

It was a pleasure speaking with Robert, a true innovator and business leader. As the President of DIPA, an organization dedicated to helping businesses adopt digital printing technology, he brings both expertise and practical insights to the conversation. For companies unsure of where to start or how to make informed investment decisions, Robert’s guidance is invaluable.

  • #199 Decoding Consumer Behavior: Leveraging Trends to Build a Brighter Print Future, With With Dario Urbinati, CEO, Gallus Group & Philippe Assouline, Expert in Behavioral Marketing

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, I had a fascinating conversation with Gallus Group CEO Dario Urbinati and Philippe Assouline, a leading marketing and insights strategist.

Our thought-provoking discussion covered how shifts in behaviour are redefining our world, how leadership must adapt, how innovation needs to align with these changes, the impact of VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity), why the skills shortage is accelerating change, and what the industry needs to do to remain viable.

Dario and Philippe delve deeply into the consumer behaviours driving these megatrends and explore what we can learn from them to advance the print industry.

    Dario Urbinati

With 17 years of experience in the graphic arts industry and having held senior positions with leading manufacturers worldwide, Dario Urbinati has been the Chief Executive Officer of Gallus Group since 2022 to steer Gallus’ mission toward a more sustainable and profitable future in the narrow web market. Since rejoining the Gallus team in St. Gallen, he has pioneered the launch of the company’s first-ever pure digital inkjet label press, made significant progress toward carbon neutrality, and spearheaded the opening of the Gallus Experience Center—a new facility designed to drive innovation, collaboration, and market transformation.

    Philippe Assouline

As hyperconnectivity continues to alter consumer behaviour beyond recognition, Philippe Assouline employs advanced analytics and psychology to help companies turn apparent chaos into opportunity and define their “emotional strategy”—how to create relevance, demand, excitement, and loyalty among consumers in the age of social media.

Philippe is an expert in consumer psychology, particularly focusing on Gen Y and Gen Z. He is the founder of PropellorIQ, a boutique consulting firm specialising in behavioural and evolutionary marketing, applied AI, and communication. Philippe bases his practice on a proprietary, analytics- and psychology-driven approach, which he calls his “Hearts then Minds Model.”

Philippe has advised major multinational companies on their marketing and communications strategies.

  • #195 - How to Innovate pt.2, With Simon Jelley & Dr Peter Brown, 42 Technology

    Send us Fan Mail

In part 2 of this engaging podcast discussion, I am joined by two experts from 42 Technology: Simon Jelley, Head of Innovation, and Dr. Peter Brown, Director of Industrial. They generously share their insights, experiences, and ideas from working with clients across various industries and scenarios.

In today's VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world, it can be tempting to avoid innovation due to the fear of failure and the perceived risk of making a catastrophic mistake that could harm our business. However, the real danger lies in not innovating at all. Failing to innovate is equivalent to failing to lead, and despite uncertainty, innovation remains as crucial as ever.

During our conversation, Simon and Peter explore the question, "What is Innovation?" They explain the different types of innovation, the innovation process, the importance of having a plan, and the crucial role of the right culture for ideation and problem-solving. We discuss how to create original and commercially viable ideas, the significance of having the right mix of people for success, and how innovation is evolving with exciting technologies like AI.

Simon Jelley spearheads the team researching, testing and implementing AI at 42T, a cross-industry technology consultancy with a strong track record in the field of printing.  Simon is a leading innovator, combining sharp technical skills across a broad range of fields with a keen eye for matching technologies with applications, and solving needs at a conceptual level with structured innovation. He has a deep understanding of the behaviour of fluids and heat transfer, and his experience and scientific understanding cross over into broader areas such as mechanism design, sensing, optics, acoustics and electronics enabling him to bridge between fields to give a more complete system-level view to development. He has applied these skills in a wide range of industries from groundbreaking process equipment for the manufacturing of foods and other FMCG, novel inspection vision systems, packaging design and decoration, consumer products, industrial tools, medical devices and even the design of payload deployment systems for space vehicles.

Dr. Peter Brown is a physicist by training who has spent much of his career inventing, developing and implementing innovative manufacturing techniques, with a focus on digital deposition and precision coating.  Specialisms include the printing of challenging functional fluids, particularly those that cannot be printed using conventional industrial inkjet printheads.
