Grow Up! (Hebrews 5:11-6:3) *Verses in NLT*
- The Book of Hebrews is written to, among others, the Christians in Rome, about the early 60s.
- The Christian community and house churches began there when those who were at Pentecost returned home around the 30s. That means 30 years of the gospel being preached in that area.
- Apostle Paul has be preaching and teaching for two decades by this time, and the word about Jesus has travelled all over the area, but those in Rome have been there from the beginning.
- After all this time, some witnessing the move of the Holy Spirit, or possibly even hearing firsthand accounts of meeting Jesus himself, what would you expect their spiritual maturity to be?
- So far in Hebrews, the author has been talking about:
- Jesus is superior to all things. Hebrews 1:3, The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command.
- How important it is to know and understand the truth. Hebrews 2:1, So we must listen carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
- Hebrews has talked about:
- All things were created through Jesus… He brings us eternal life… The concept of Jesus being 100% God and 100% man…
- Jesus being the perfect sacrifice for sin, fulfilling the old testament sacrificial system…
- Many connections were made between Old Testament events and people, and how it relates to Jesus and today…
- Jesus is our perfect high priest, in the order of Melchizedek, deserving even more glory than Moses…
- This is the stuff that many of them have been taught about for years, week in and week out. It is complex, but the believers should have gained some mature understanding by now.
Hebrews 5:11-6:3 (NLT), There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
6 So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. 2 You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.
Point #1. Babies eat milk. Adults eat meat.
- Food is a fun and easy spiritual metaphor. We all have a lifetime of experience with food.
- Many of us also have a solid base knowledge of nutrition: (These are not trick questions!)
- What foods are bad for you? (Sugar). …and why?
- Sugar example: According to Florida, the average sugar cane stalk (6’ by 2” and 3lbs) is 85% juice, of which is 11% sugar by weight. One stock produces 132g or refined sugar.
- a 20oz bottle of Coke has 65g of sugar in it.
