Adam vs Jesus (Romans 5:12-21) *Verses in NKJV, except for one in NLT*
- Genesis 2:15-16, Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
- Genesis 3:6, So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
- God was walking through the garden and asked Adam what happened. Adam blamed the woman, the woman blamed the snake… But who did God give the command to in the first place!? (Adam)
- This is the original sin. When death entered the world. “Everything is all Adam’s fault!”
- It’s easy for us to throw Adam under the bus for this. Consider his actions…
- Adam violated all of the “manhood principles” with a cascading effect! (Sin leads to more sin!)
- *POP QUIZ*, men:
- What are the manhood principles as defined by God? (RAL-E)
(Reject passivity, Accept responsibility, Lead courageously, Expect the greater reward)
- What are a man’s responsibilities? (A Work to do, a Will to obey, a Woman to love)
- Adam first stood passively by while the serpent deceived his wife and got her to do the one thing God told Adam shouldn’t be done.
- Adam then hid from God in the bushes like a coward, and when God called him out, he failed to accept responsibility and instead blamed it all on his wife.
- He chose the immediate perceived pleasure of the apple, foregoing the great reward God had planned for them in the Garden, thus condemning all of mankind to toil, struggle, and death.
- It is easy to say it was Adam’s fault, and want to blame someone else for our sins. IRONICALLY, that would cause us to do the very thing we are condemning him for; not taking responsibility.
- Consider your own actions! Being passive in your life, blaming your spouse, instant gratification…
- Sin entered the world through Adam, but WE are accountable for our own sins! If you don’t accept and recognize our yown sin, you can never truly accept or understand your need for a Savior.
- Romans 12:3, For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
- The reality is, that if you were Adam or Eve, you would have eventually done the same thing. And if you don’t believe that, then you still have unrecognized sin in your heart that needs to be dealt with.
- Our only hope is Jesus. Through one man sin entered the world. Through one man sin is defeated!

1. Adam vs Jesus. (Flesh vs Spirit)
(This is all setting up the difference between where we stand, with Christ, or without Christ.)
- The bible describes these two men in terms of the 1st Adam, and the 2nd Adam or “last Adam”.
- “Adam” is both the name of the original man, and also the Hebrew word for “human” or “mankind”.
- 1 Cor. 15:45-47, And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.
