In this episode, we welcome Gabe Wander to the show. Gabe is a retired Army Major and combat veteran. After enlisting in the Army at 17, he eventually became an Officer and Nurse Anesthesiologist with a JSOC unit at Fort Bragg. That unit is the only Tier 1 unit that provides direct medical support to JSOC special missions units. During a workup, he had a near fatal parachute injury that required several emergency surgeries, and he remained hospitalized for nearly a month. During his recovery, he wondered what lessons he would choose to pass on to his children if he were to ever die in combat. That culminated in him writing a children’s book: Maintain Eye Contact While Shaking Hands: A Message to Boys on Being a Man. In this interview, we discuss how he handled the recovery process after his injury, common misperceptions about US Special Operators, his thoughts on the pullout from Afghanistan, why he decided to write a children’s book, what lessons he thinks every man should pass on to their sons, and much more. Let’s get into it…
