GHiT 0298: Racing Suits, Shoes, and Gloves with AlpineStars
Fabryce Kutyba is with the North American Alpinestars group and was kind enough to join us for a quick discussion on driver protection equipment, including racing suits, racing shoes, and gloves. We cover several key aspects of each component and the overall system to protect the driver. For instance, one piece vs two piece drivers suits, grades and certifications, proper care, and approximate replacement/upgrade guidelines. We also go through a very high level review of the Alpinestars product line offerings. Hopefully, this is the first part of a many part series.

DwD 0297: Track Driving - With Nanny's or Without
On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go into another listener submitted question from Ron Mexico related to driving on track with the car's driver nanny's on. First we cover from a high level what a driving nanny is and then we go into our thoughts on driving on track with the nanny's "assisting" you and when/if there is ever a good time to use the nanny's.
So what do you do with the driver assistance aides on track? Do you leave them on or do you turn them off? What factors would influence the use of them, like weather and student driving level/experience etc.?

GHiT 0296: Mo Dadkhah from Hagerty's The Drive Within
We first were introduced to Mo Dadkhah during our episode with Loni Unser and then we saw that he was on "The Drive Within" with the rest of the Round Three Racing team (R3R) as they competed in the WRL endurance racing series. The show is sponsored by Hagerty and appears on their site as well as the Motor Trend channel. Mo is one of the drivers of the #701 Porsche Cayman that competes in the GP1 class within WRL. During this episode, we go over Mo's racing history, the WRL series, the R3R team, and tons of details on the making of the show. This show is being released ahead of the season ending episode that should be released this Friday. "The Drive Within" is the first show that we have found that accurately depicts the highs and lows that each team and driver experiences during a race weekend. It is a can't miss show and has a permanent spot on our DVR.

Highlights for this episode include:
1) How endurance racing and consistency of effort has led to Mo's growth as a driver and allowed him to reach his current level.
2) We go into how the Cayman #701 race car came to be the tool of choice that Mo drives with his team in WRL's GP1 class primarily against other Caymans and E46 BMW's.
3) What Mo gets from his racing and how drivers are "compensated" even at the higher levels in the US. Spoiler, none of us will likely be making a mortgage payment anytime soon.
4) How the R3R racing team works and interacts at the races and what you can learn from them that will help your endurance racing team.
5) Mo gives a great summary of the way that the WRL series classifications work and his thoughts on the way the series functions and keeps the competition level high but still more reliant on the driver, as opposed to the budget/checkbook.
6) We also go into starting and filming "The Drive Within" and we start to feel a bit better about our iPhone and Android race weekend videos not being quite up to this level, lol.
7) The R3R team is a perfect example that the team is not just about the drivers, it depends on each and every team member, both before and at the track, and when operating properly, it becomes a family.
8) Tips on how to improve as a driver and tons of little items that R3R does as a team that everyone can incorporate into their racing program and team, even if it is a "team" of one.
9) Mo uses a coach personally and we review his opinions on how a coach can help your driving and the differences between an instructor and a coach. We need to try this in 2022.
10) We come up with a new business plan. No stealing please.
PS Don't tease Mo too hard after the least episode airing this Friday.
PS2 Please let everyone know about the show and hopefully we can get a second season
PS3 We gladly welcome Mo's repeated offers to become a "producer" of the show and secure some great episodes
PS4 Let us know if you want to hear Mo subjected to the our fast and furious story time questions. We have a bunch of other racing and driving questions for him as well.

DwD 0295: Discussing and Defining Driving at "X" Tenths
On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about one of those concepts that is always discussed in the paddocks, especially at HPDE's and endurance races. This week we go through a discussion of driving "intensity" that is often referred to in the arbitrary units of "tenths" as in driving at 8 tenths or 9 tenths or never drive at 10 tenths in an endurance race etc. What does this really mean? We discuss this after a quite side discussion on driving other peoples cars. Then we wrap this up with a tremendous article that our friend Peter Krause and former guest wrote about an example of a quantitative description of his definition of each of the "tenths" from low intensity to the higher and highest levels possible.
We hope the discussion is helpful in not only starting to refer to each level on a common reference but also the discussion it leads to when describing and defining your own personal driving limits and target.

GHiT 0294: ChrisFix - Endurance Racer
Most of you will know ChrisFix from his YouTube channel or from his presence on social media. We have been subscribers to his YouTube channel prior to even trying our hand at racing. Then last year, we were one of the first to see his video drop on his teams upcoming endurance racing adventure with the 24 Hours of Lemons team and it even happened to be at a race we were already registered for at NJMP Thunderbolt. In this episode, we take way too much of Mr. Fix's time and cover his history and how his channel started and progressed. We then cover the teams preparation and their race at NJMP. As with all first time endurance racing teams, the first race has various highs and lows, and tons of surprises. The preview to the NJMP race video has been released and the video detailing the race at NJMP will be released any day now. Without giving away any spoilers, we are very happy to say that the ChrisFix team fully embraced the spirit of endurance racing and were a great group to race with and call friends. We hope to see them all again on track soon!

Highlights for this episode include:
1) ChrisFix starts off with the traditional greeting and then we progress with a great summary of how he started and how his passion for helping others has led to the growth of his YouTube channel.
2) Vicki (is quite the super fan and) goes through a short summary of the helpful videos and tools that ChrisFix has contributed to our team.
3) How boxing led to the ChrisFix channel and what were some of the key points that led to the channel becoming what it is today.
4) Chris and Jennifer commiserate about learning to drive a manual transmission late in life.
5) How Chris and the team decided to enter the race, chose their car, and prepped for the race. The plan was perfect, until it wasn't, and then the real fun began.
6) Since Chris had experience with his drift events, we also went into the differences he saw at his first endurance event.
7) We also learn what Chris's impressions were during his first few laps on track with 120+ cars racing wheel to wheel.
8) Chris gives a great summary of the entire race and some of the challenges that the team encountered during their weekend. Now we really cannot wait for the video to be released, and we were there, lol.
9) And then the entire paddock was there to help in any way that we could, as we do for every fellow racing team.
10) We go over our traditional race review with Chris and what did they learn from the first racing weekend.
11) Chris and his entire team are prepping the car and the team for their return to endurance racing. Some of us could learn a lot from his teams approach to preparing their car for their next race. We even offered a few tips that we have learned racing a similar car.

DwD 0302: Getting Advanced in HPDE Too Quickly
On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, another listener submitted question leads to a discussion of getting advanced too quickly in HPDE. While this may initially be flattering to one's ego, it may not be the best for the HPDE student's overall progress and development as a driver and can also lead to increased risk on track that does not directly lead to increased skill for the driver and/or other drivers on track.

GHIT 0292: Aaron Jongbloedt
Aaron Jongbloedt from Jungle Motorsports joins us for this episode and we discuss all things racing, even ice boating. Aaron seems to race in all series and all types of racing, we may even be able to make it to an ice racing event with him post plague. Since he has such a wide range of experiences, we try to cover many of them as possible to show how each series and club can vary and each offers a different blend of driving and racing flavor. The best thing you can do to start is try as many as you can and you will undoubtedly find one that matches your interests and maximizes the fun. Plus an impromptu race car intervention, lol.

Highlights for this episode include:
1) Why he selected Spec Miata as a primary racing class and why he also includes and enjoys other types of racing.
2) Aaron opens up the trap door to a quick summary of our racing cars and HPDE cars. We need to get a bit more focus. Time for a garage sale. We may have a race car (or truck) for you, lol
3) Vicki is not familiar with the track at Brainerd, but after our discussion it sounds like we will be soon, lol. Top tip: Also obey the team CFO.
4) Some of the plusses and minuses of racing Spec Miata and how it has influenced hos racing approach and philosophy.
5) Are there significant differences between instructing in autocross and instructing on a race track? Also a discussion of the potential benefits of autocross before driving on track. The skills are complimentary but the approach can be quite different in some ways.
6) Aaron discusses his experience with almost all of the amateur endurance racing series and some of the new ones starting this season.
7) As expected, we also discuss Spec Miata and Vicki is still intimidated with the concept of bump drafting. This will likely change with time. We have a NB Spec Miata car that needs a bit of love to race this season, but we are hopeful. Bilstein shocks may be in our future.
8) Why does Aaron seem to prefer arrive and drive (Seat Rentals) for endurance racing events. Bill has always had concerns and questions that has prevented him from doing many arrive and drives. We discuss several of them.
9) Money saving tips and insight into what is required and what is avoidable to be competitive in the series, locally and nationally.
10) Somehow we return to the topic of our cars. It appears we are in the midst of an informal race car intervention. lol. (Probably long overdue)
11) We also have a discussion of the storage required for a racing car and team. Aaron is curious about the hangar that we use as our teams primary hub.
12) How volunteering at events can minimize or potentially eliminate the cost of racing.
13) How our "press" claim was received by a racing series. (as you would expect)
14) Just when you thought it was over, we get into a discussion of some of the local midwestern tracks that Aaron suggest we try. As always, the answer is "yes"

GLTC, Sundae Cup, and their HPDE Program
Adam Jabaay returns to talk all things GRIDLIFE. Adam is the co-founder of the GRIDLIFE event series and the series is designed to be the track events that the GRIDLIFE team would want to attend. We had a series on last year that covered several of the wheel to wheel GLTC (Grid Life Touring Cup) series. During this episode, we go over the 2022 series and several of the other events in the series including their time attack (fast lap counts) racing series and the GRIDLIFE HPDE program. We have a plan to attend our first GRIDLIFE event this year and will be participating in the event at Lime Rock. If you haven't heard of GRIDLIFE, it is definitely not a typical track event and in many ways, the track events are only the beginning of the festivities.

5) Ever wonder what is GRIDLIFE? Adam does a great review if you are not already familiar.
6) We had a chance to talk with ADAM about the history that led to the creation of GRIDLIFE and has allowed them to become a very popular sprint racing series that has live streaming viewer numbers that would make many professional series jealous.
7) Adam goes into the recent changes to the GLTS series to a 200 treadwear tire series including the thought process that led to the change.
8) What did Skip Barber think of GRIDLIFE and what will be going on at the Lime Rock event.
9) How GRIDLIFE has grown and how you can participate in the event.

12) What is coming for GRIDLIFE and how the east and west coast can expect to see events in the 2022 and more in 2023.
13) Bill launches his appeal for a wheel to wheel Sundae Cup race. Logistics are always a concern, but we would be there. Even better for an enduro.
