A short story by the American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe. Its theme revolves around attempts to avoid a dangerous plague called the Red Death by the main protagonist, Prince Prospero.

The story follows the footsteps of gothic literature and is often interpreted as an allegory of the inevitability of death, although such an analysis is not recommended by some critics. There are many explanations regarding the interpretation of the novella, as well as numerous attempts to identify the nature of the "Red Death."

Lovecraft writes about the short story in a letter to Clark Ashton Smith dated October 22, 1933: "A few months ago, I had a dream about an evil clergyman in the attic filled with forbidden books" (quote from: H.P. Lovecraft. Biography). The evil clergyman was extracted from a letter to Bernard Austin Dwyer. The latter copied a fragment of the correspondence and titled it "The Wicked Clergyman." August Derleth changed the title to "The Evil Clergyman" before publishing the text in the collection "Beyond the Wall of Sleep." Derleth also unjustifiably assigned the creation date to 1937 (a claim echoed for many years in some bibliographies).

A story about a scientist who discovers a deadly species of fly in Africa and wishes to use it for the elimination of an adversary. He disregards the superstitions of the Africans who believe that the soul of the one killed by this "devilish fly" enters the body of the insect.

Another work almost entirely authored by Lovecraft. His creation was particularly the idea concluding the Winged Death, even though it was rejected in "Strange Stories" – supposedly, another author had come up with a similar punchline earlier. The editor-in-chief of "Weird Tales" pondered for a long time before accepting the story.

A group of men gather in New Orleans to distribute the estate of the missing Randolph Carter. One of them claims that Carter is alive and begins to weave an incredible tale of his adventures.

E. Hoffman Price, during Lovecraft's visit to his home in New Orleans in June 1931, tried to persuade the Providence writer to create a continuation of Randolph Carter's adventures after the character disappears in the story "The Silver Key." HPL refused to be persuaded, so Price himself, without permission, created a text titled "The Lord of Illusion" in August. He sent the result to Lovecraft, hoping that he would agree to edit the work.

HPL struggled for a long time with the editing of the text. Although he radically changed the linguistic layer of the work, he made no major changes to the plot. Indeed, it is evident that the ideas are not his own: a lot of action, poorly thought-out concepts, and little suggestiveness.
