As we begin our “Koinonia” sermon series, we are reminded that our life lived as Christian people is not lived for ourselves, but for others. This is a difficult truth for us to embrace because we’re raised to believe that “me first” is an acceptable mantra. And it would be acceptable...if we were just Americans. But we’re not just Americans, we’re American-Christians, or Christians who happen to live in America. As such, we can show a better way to those around us as we show them Jesus’ way by putting “Others First”. Yes, take care of yourself and take care of your family. We will remember today however, that as a Christian, we live like Jesus lived and consider the needs of “Others First”.
I have heard it said that happiness is based on externals while joy is based on internals. Happiness can come and go based on life circumstances but joy, true joy, has the ability to be claimed every day. This week we will be encouraged to choose joy no matter what is going on in our lives. Jesus promised us in John 16:33 that in this life we have many troubles but we can take heart, we can choose joy, because Jesus has overcome the world.

A life lived for Jesus is definitely more of a marathon than a sprint. To make it to the end will take determination, it will take great faith and it will take endurance. Paul encourages us all this week to run our race of faith, not with our own strength, but with the strength that comes from God Himself. In this life we will face many obstacles, we will endure many heartbreaks, we will have times when our faith wavers but thank be to God that the one who called us is faithful and will never leave us or forsake us.
