Have you ever read a modern retelling of a classic book, like Pride and Prejudice, and felt it completely missed the point? Today on Geek Devotions, we're talking about why context changes everything, both in our favorite literature and when we study Scripture!

In this episode, Celeste shares her honest (and maybe a little brutal) thoughts on the 2013 retelling, Eligible. We dive into why removing a story from its original timeframe can completely change its core message, and discuss the big difference between seeing yourself in a story versus projecting your own prejudices onto it. More importantly, we explore how this exact same "retelling" problem happens when we open our Bibles without looking at the historical context.

Question of the Week: What is your LEAST favorite retelling of a classic story? (We're looking at you, modern Wuthering Heights adaptations...) Let’s talk about it in the comments!

If you enjoyed this, do us a favor: hit the like button, hit the subscribe button, and know that you are loved and cared for! Stay devoted. Peace and love.

Over the last six months, I've been reading an Elseworlds Batman story where Bruce accidentally creates six shadow monsters out of his own brokenness. But it turned into a huge lesson about facing the things we run from.

In this episode, we're talking about issue six of Immortal Legends Batman. Bruce Wayne tries to distance himself from his personal weakness, but it backfires, creating literal shadow monsters that tarnish his name. We connect this to the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with God, learning that we can't do this alone, and we often have to be humbled before we can truly heal

Is your spiritual walk "utterly uninteresting," or is it a journey of growth? In this episode, Celeste dives into the finale of Drew Hayes' Fred the Vampire Accountant series to look at how a character goes from meek and mild to a confident leader.Using 1 Corinthians 13:11, we discuss the vital difference between having a childlike faith and staying in childish ignorance. Real growth isn't usually about flashy moments—it's about the unflashy, daily disciplines that change how we react to the world around us.Time Stamps00:00 – Drew Hayes' Fred the Vampire Accountant: A Series Review.00:37 – Character Arcs: How Fred goes from Meek to Leader.01:47 – The Biblical Mandate for Maturity and Growth.02:16 – 1 Corinthians 13:11: Putting away childish ways in your faith.02:58 – How to stop being a "child" in your spiritual life.03:19 – The difference between Childlike Faith and Spiritual Immaturity.03:53 – Simple Habits for Spiritual Growth: Prayer and Scripture.04:26 – The Reaction Test: How to measure your maturity.05:03 – Overcoming struggles with Anger and Scripture Memorization.06:03 – Question of the Week: One small step for your faithKey TakeawaysGrowth is a Process: Just as Fred changes over the span of years in the book series, our faith requires time and intention to mature.Don't Stay Ignorant: We cannot remain in the same state of "not knowing" that we were in when we first came to Christ. We must push ourselves to learn biblical accuracy.Check Your Reactions: A major marker of spiritual maturity is emotional regulation. If you are struggling with the same anger or reactions you had a year ago, it's time to find a biblical way to move past it.Question of the WeekWhat is one small step you can take this week to grow in your faith? We aren't looking for giant leaps like preaching on a street corner—we're looking for commitments like reading the Bible for 7 days straight or dedicating time to prayer.Let us know your answer in the comments or on our social media!💙 THANK YOU TO OUR PATRONS We are so thankful to our Devoted Patreon Geeks who help make this ministry possible: Ruiz Family, Adam Arciniega, Branson Boykin, Nerd Chapel, Jacob Russell, Jeffrey Leon, Jonathan Herrman, Kevin Lovelace, Lady Lomax, Paul Turner, Paul J Powers, Savie Wilson, The Cel Cast, Monster Island Film Vault — and so many more.Thank you for your continued support!
