  • Return of The Christmas Special
Originally Aired: 12/07/18 – Our annual Christmas show featuring Alex James and a look at Christmas movies, comics and TV shows
    Show Notes:
That’s right friends, the season is upon us! It’s time for the Geek Hard Christmas Special!
We start off with the return of our favourite holiday punching bag – Alex James, in studio for the whole show. He will be performing later in the show but first, we have to beat him up a little. Like we said he’s our favourite holiday punching bag!
Our annual tradition of the Great Christmas Movie Swap! continues. Where we each give the other a Christmas movie the other hasn’t watched for the first time and then we review it. Mr. Green reviews A Christmas Without Snow (chosen by Andrew) released by CBS Studios starring Michael Learned, John Houseman and Ramon Bieri. Leaving her son behind at her parents’ home in Omaha, Neb., recent divorcée Zoe (Michael Learned) attempts to start her life anew by moving to San Francisco. Seeking something to fill her lonely hours, she begins singing with a church choir. When new choirmaster Ephraim Adams (John Houseman) is hired, Zoe finds his attitudes and ideas difficult to tolerate. Faced with the challenging task of satisfying Adams’ unrelenting perfectionism, Zoe is tempted once more to run away from her problems. While Andrew reviews El Camino Christmas (chosen by Mr. Green) released by Netflix starring Dax Shepard, Kurtwood Smith and Luke Grimes. A young man seeking the father he has never met ends up barricaded inside of a liquor store with five other people on Christmas Eve.
We, of course, continue the tradition of forcing Mr. Green to read Christmas themed comics. This year Andrew has chosen Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Vol 1 #10 written by Gary Friedrich & Frank Springer with art by Frank Springer, Barry Smith & Johnny Craig. Goon #10 written by Eric Powell with art by Eric Powell. Ant-Man’s Big Christmas Vol 1 #1 written Bob Gale with art by Phil Winslade, Jimmy Palmiotti & Richard Isanove! While Mr. Green likes comics he is not a fan of Christmas themed comics and Andrew continues’ his campaign to make Green like them.
Of course, no Christmas show would be complete without our annual checking out of Christmas specials and hitting some television specials from the past. Eureka – Do You See What I See, Goldbergs – A Christmas Story and Supernatural – A Very Supernatural Christmas Christmas episodes.
Lastly, no Geekmas would be complete without Alex James taking part in another of Geek Hard’s time honoured traditions: Alex James Christmas Trivia. For the past 7 years running, we have subjected Alex to an embarrassing trivia quiz that shows off how much of a humbug this guy really is. If you’ve never heard the quiz before, you’re in for a treat. For those that have, the good times continue.
The Geek Hard Christmas Stocking winner is announced. Congratulations! Ben Leonard of Whitby, Ontario.
Plus, the debut of Geek Hard’s 2018 Christmas song “Green Christmas” performed by Andrew Young and musical accompaniment by Alex James.

CW working on a new DC property called Super Clean. NIST has upped the anty on Atomic Clock accuracy that can detect space-time fluctuations.
Our review of The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell, Darby Camp and Judah Lewis. A holiday adventure from producer Chris Columbus (“Home Alone”, “Harry Potter”) and director Clay Kaytis (“The Angry Birds Movie”), tells the story of sister and brother, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa – as you’ve never seen him before – and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it’s too late.
We also speak with director Jennifer Nicole Stang to talk about her latest short, The Whistler. A spooky take on the Pied Piper, The Whistler is a story about a teenage girl who is forced to babysit her sister and wakes up to find that same sister missing. The short was recently shown at the Blood In The Snow Film Festival and Andrew gave it a rave review in his coverage. JENNIFER NICOLE STANG was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has lived in England, Canada, the U.S., and Spain. Jennifer founded her film production company, Round Table Pictures (Formerly Heart Anchor Productions), with her brother, Emmett, in 2011. With her company, Jennifer has directed award-winning music videos and short films, and has produced videos for clients such as Sotheby’s International, USC, and Jamie Nichols for Celebrate Dance. Her short film, El Lago (The Lake) has received various awards. Jennifer is currently co-producing a feature film with Dark Matter Studios. For more info on The Whistler, check out the film’s website.

Our review of Ralph Breaks The Internet! starring John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman and Gal Gadot. Video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz must risk it all by traveling to the World Wide Web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, “Sugar Rush.” In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet — the netizens — to help navigate their way, including an entrepreneur named Yesss, who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site BuzzzTube.
We also play Andrew’s interview with filmmaker Corey Stanton about his first feature film, Robbery. The movie stars Art Hindle and focuses on robbery where the getaway driver is suffering from dementia. Corey Stanton hails from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We talk with director Nick Szostakiwskyj. His new film, Hammer of the Gods will be playing at this year’s Blood In The Snow Canadian Film Festival on Saturday, November 24th at 4:30PM. Nick told us more about the film. Hammer of the Gods follows falling-from-grace rock group, half a decade after the release of their hit single, as they travel deep into the Canadian wilderness on a spirit journey armed with a bag of psychedelic drugs. The journey seems harmless enough, until the isolated musicians begin to realize the terrifying hallucinations they are seeing and hearing aren’t hallucinations at all. For more on Hammer of the Gods, check out the BITS Film Fest Website
Our review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans of raising pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
We also talk with writer, actress and comedian Dani Fernandez! Dani is probably best known for hosting gigs for Nerdist and Project Alpha on Fangirling and Natural Selection.
