  • Nadine Alameh: Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)

Ed speaks with Nadine Alameh, CEO of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), and speaker at our February Geomob event. Nadine gives us the overview of what the OGC is, who the members are, and what exactly the organization does. She shares how geospatial standards are crafted, and some of the new technologies and areas where work is currently being done. While we were unable to definitively resolve the lat/lon vs lon/lat debate, we do discuss the case of OpenStreetMap, the balance between standards AND innovation, and new geospatial challenges around technologies like IoT, drones, etc. Nadine reflects on finding consensus between some of the largest geospatial organizations of the world. We get into the detail of collaborating to address the world's geospatial dilemmas. Ultimately, the OGC is doing the hard work of engaging with the global geocommunity to make complexity easy to use.

  • Ed/Steven: Project updates
This is one of our regular, shorter episodes in which Ed and Steven catch up on their projects and discuss the geonews.
Over at Mappery the team has spotted a new map based artist who has left us all saying "wow!". Ed meanwhile is grappling with the complexities of pricing a new product, and will soon be ready for beta testers of OpenCage's new geosearch service if anyone wants to volunteer.

We start our discussion of geonews by reflecting on the tragic news of the recent death of Malena Libman, a pillar of the FOSS4G community, and one of the organizers of FOSS4G 2021. Steven has written a tribute post on his blog. We offer our condolences to her family, friends, and the FOSS4G community.

We then discuss the news that Pixel8, whose founder, Sean Gorman, presented at Geomob last November, and was a guest on the podcast around the same time, has been acquired by Snap. Finally, we close with a few musings about border disputes.

  • Will Cadell: Sparkgeo
Steven catches up with old friend Will Cadell, CEO of geospatial consultancy Sparkgeo. Will shares stories from the trenches, giving a perspective on life in a geo consultancy. They also revisit Will's presentation "Creating a geo strategy" presented at last year's FOSS4GUK, with the standout line "It's easy to build something because it's fun. But thinking strategically can turn a fun project into a million-dollar business. We should do more of that." A great conversation about turning geo technology into a geo business.

  • Denise McKenzie & Ben Hawes: Locus Charter
The global pandemic and ensuing travel restrictions has increased societal awareness of, and desire to discuss, the technical possibilities and implications of collection and use of location data. This week our guests are Denise McKenzie and Ben Hawes, two of the organizers of the recently announced Locus Charter, a proposed set of common international principles to support ethical and responsible practice when using location data. Denise and Ben talk with Steven about the motivations of the initiative, who it is aimed at, and how everyone can get involved.

The project is still in its infancy, but is now gaining momentum, and seeking discussion, feedback, and collaboration from a broad spectrum of organizations, small and large, across the location industry. We encourage all Geomob podcast listeners to learn more about Locus Charter and Engage in this dialogue.
