    Title: Conversations with Mozart
    Subtitle: In His Own Words
    Author: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
    Narrator: Andrew Havill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-12-10
    Publisher: White Crow Productions Ltd
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a child prodigy who became an adult genius, died in debt and was buried in an unmarked grave in his adopted home of Vienna. Mozart needed no formal lessons in composition. Hed been composing since the age of five, and possessed astonishing musical memory, able to re-create whatever he heard or saw. He could mimic different styles and his travels, which were endless, gave him plenty to imitate whether sacred, dramatic or instrumental. As he said, I can pretty well adapt or conform myself to any style or composition. He was not the tortured artist but could compose whilst playing billiards or skittles, ordering the musical ideas in his head so exactly that writing them down was a slightly mechanical affair, requiring little effort. The music was there in its entirety in his head.
Mozart struggled with relationships, revealing a strong sense of abandonment beneath the surface. Quick to judge, he possessed a sharp manner himself, but saw only the upset that others caused him. He had a long list of foes and his battles with them he describes in much detail. A difficult relationship with his controlling father Leopold was partially offset by a happy marriage to Constanze, a genuine oasis in a world he found frustrating. Mozart was a phenomenal performer as well as composer, enjoying moments of great adulation. But these never turned into financial security. For this reason, he was a reluctant piano teacher throughout his life. Conversations with Mozart is an imagined conversation with the man behind the music who died largely unnoticed at the age of 35. But while the questions are imagined, Mozarts words are not; they are all authentically his, taken from his many letters. He was the eternal child. As his sister Nanerl said, Outside of music he was, and remained, nearly always a child. But he was a child with a seat at the very top composers table; a conduit for the most perfectly shaped musical argument, sublime harmonies and with a deep understanding of drama and emotion. Theres never a dull moment with Wolfgang, says Simon Parke. Hes fascinating on the subject of music, and beguiling on the soap opera of his life. He understood music better than he understood himself, which brought suffering. But he was determined to be cheerful. Hope was always round the next corner for Wolfgang.

Always looked for a book like this
I will admit: I always wanted to "talk" to Mozart, because I was in love with his music since I was 9 years old. This book makes my dreams come true. I love how the book uses Mozart's own letters to quote him, but still makes me feel like I am really reading a conversation between the author and Mozart. Like this, I feel Mozart even more personal than just reading his letters. This book is great.

    Title: Fury
    Author: Koren Zailckas
    Narrator: Koren Zailckas
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-08-10
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
The author of the iconic New York Times best seller Smashed undertakes a quest to confront her own anger.
In the years following the publication of her landmark memoir, Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood, Koren Zailckas stays sober and relegates binge drinking to her past. But a psychological legacy of repression lingers - her sobriety is a loose surface layer atop a hard- packed, unacknowledged rage that wreaks havoc on Koren emotionally and professionally.
When a failed relationship leads Koren back to her childhood home, she sinks into emotional crisis - writer's block, depression, anxiety. Only when she begins to apply her research on a book about anger to the turmoil of her own life does she learn what denial has cost her. The result is a blisteringly honest chronicle of the consequences of anger displaced and the balm of anger discovered. Listeners who recognized themselves or someone they loved in Smashed will identify with Koren's life-altering exploration and the necessity of exposing anger's origins in order to flourish in love and life as an adult. Combining sophisticated sociological research with a dramatic and deeply personal story that grapples boldly with identity and family, Fury is a dazzling work by a young writer at the height of her powers that is certain to touch a cultural nerve.

The Second Half is Way Better than the First
What did you like best about Fury? What did you like least?
When Koren got real and actually started telling her story rather than dancing around it with disjointed stories and ill-placed academic quotes.
What other book might you compare Fury to and why?
I liked Koren's first book, Smashed, a lot. This one is different, and at first I was really disappointed, but it got better as I kept listening.
    Any additional comments?
I really didnt like this book at first, it was super scattered and nearly incoherent with a lot of extraneous quoting. She spent a lot of time talking about how hard it was to write the book, and I almost stopped listening because it was all actually somewhat annoying. But about halfway through, it seemed to really shift into a different style of narration. I think Koren shifted in her life as she was writing, and her story got a lot easier to follow and relate to from there.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Anna Del Conte brought Italian cooking to Britain at a time when the nearest most of us came to pasta was a Heinz spaghetti hoop. Sharply observant, evocative, full of tastes and talk of food, hers is a delicious, poignant memoir of an unusual life and the food she loves to cook, which launched a culinary revolution.
She arrived in England in 1949 when much of Britain was a culinary wasteland, married an Englishman, and stayed on. Her memories of the time are vividly, hilarious preserved - from the joys of un-rationed horse meat to tomato soup at Lyons Corner House. While bringing up her children, she wrote books that inspired a new generation of cooks.

    Not enough sting
I think the author thought that the addition of recipes would lift the book to literary heights. Although she lived through the war in Italy she had a relatively comfortable life with not as many hardships as most of the rest of Europe. It didn't inspire much admiration. The book was saved for me by the wonderful narration. I remember Rula doing the Alberto V.O 5 ads in the 1980s. My kids and I loved her voice. The weekend I finished it I was at my local Farmer's Market and found fresh nettles. I made the risotto. It was lovely.
    Great memoir with food
What did you love best about Risotto with Nettles?
A very fine memoir about one of the most important Italian food writers. Perfect balance of life stories, food stories and recipes.
What other book might you compare Risotto with Nettles to and why?
If you liked My Life in France by Julia Child you may enjoy this book very much.
Which character as performed by Rula Lenska was your favorite?
The reader was excellent. I had to remind myself time and again that it was not Ms. del Conte reading the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not a funny book but it clearly has sense of humor. Ms. del Conte recounts a joke about a Genovese widow that made me laugh out loud.
    Wonderful!
I choose this book on a compete whim. I didn't know who Anna was at all. Such a wonderful memoir full of fascinating observances and recipes . It's is beautifully written, perfectly read and captivating. Looking forward to trying her recipes
I didn't want this book to end.
I was emersed into Anna's world from the start to the finish. Beautiful book...I just didn't want it to end.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
'As a diarist I have chronicled the time through which I have lived in meticulous detail - but all that is history. What matters now is the future for those who will live through it.
'The past is the past but there may be lessons to be learned which could help the next generation to avoid mistakes their parents and grandparents made.
'Certainly at my age I have learned an enormous amount from the study of history not so much from the political leaders of the time but from those who struggled for justice and explained the world in a way that shows the continuity of history and has inspired me to do my work.
'Normality for any individual is what the world is like on the day they are born. The normality of the young is wholly different from the normality of their grandparents. It is the disentangling of the real questions from the day to day business of politics that may make sense for those who take up the task as they will do.
'Every generation has to fight the same battles as their ancestors had to fight, again and again, for there is no final victory and no final defeat. Two flames have burned from the beginning of time the flame of anger against injustice and the flame of hope. If this book serves its purpose it will fan both flames.'

    Inspirational. A Great Read
Tony Benn is one of the few honest politicians that I know about. Always stood by his principles and always stood up against the establishment.
    Suprised
I heard this book being recommended on the radio some months ago, and although Benn was not a favourite of mine whilst he was in office, I found this book surprisingly interesting and rewarding. I even found my 18 year old lad listening to it, so as it says on the tin, it does cover the ages. Each letter is broken down into a chapter, which makes it great to listen to on short journeys or for a 5 to 10 min slot before bedtime. So Mr Benn, credit where credit is due, well done.
    On point!
Tony Benn giving credence to the spirit of triumph over diversity and the belief that as individuals and communities we have the power to make the world a better place. As he did.
    Wonderful
What made the experience of listening to Letters to My Grandchildren the most enjoyable?
The book was an honest letter to his grandchildren, but in essence a letter to all of us. It is an original and thought provoking idea. Tony Benn was an amazing man.
What other book might you compare Letters to My Grandchildren to, and why?
It is like 'free at last'.
What about Tony Benns performance did you like?
Tony is very honest and heartfelt.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The Daddy shop was quite good.
    Any additional comments?
I never wanted it to end really.
    Interesting selection of ideas
This book comprises a selection of Tony Benn's views and beliefs, presented as a series of letters to his grandchildren. Through these letters, Benn discusses issues which were important to him and his generation and how these are relevant (or not) to today's younger generation.
The work is greatly enhanced by being narrated by the author which, at times, gives the impression of having a personal interview with him.
The chapters can be listened to in any order so it is also a good book to dip into at random when you feel like it.

    Title: Dining with al-Qaeda
Subtitle: Three Decades Exploring the Many Worlds of the Middle East
    Author: Hugh Pope
    Narrator: Paul Boehmer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 20 mins

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
An Oxford-educated scholar of the Middle East and a former foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, Hugh Pope lived and worked in two dozen countries throughout the region. Following in the footsteps of Sir Richard Burton and Lawrence of Arabia, Hugh Pope's explorations of the people, politics, religion, and culture of Islamic nations shows there is no such thing as a monolithic "Muslim World".
His probing and often perilous journeys - at one point he is forced to quote Koranic verse to argue against his being murdered by a top al-Qaeda leader - provide an eye-opening look at diverse societies often misportrayed by superficial reporting and "why they hate us" politics.
With U.S. foreign policy under President Obama aiming to engage more constructively with Muslim nations, this lyrical and often poetic voyage is one of the truly important books of our times.
    Critic Reviews:
An enjoyable chronicle of a rich life's work. (
    Kirkus)
"His criticisms of the invasion and of Israel may grate some readers, but those interested in the interpersonal rather than the international will enjoy Popes bold curiosity in meeting people all over the Middle East." (

    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing
The subtitle "Exploring Three Decades...of the Middle East" is misleading in the way it suggests a thoughtful, insightful and analytical chronology of events during this incredible period of Middle Eastern history. Instead, this book is a montage of the author's impressions of this region while he was a foreign news correspondent and mirrors many of the things we already know - the violence, the emerging radicalness of Islam, the treatment of women - and also reflects idiosyncrasies of the author that concern me little - his obsession with writing articles that make the front page of the WSJ and of the lack of veracity of many foreign correspondents' reporting of events, his anti-Isael views, etc. Maddeningly, he frequently digresses during his discourses, going back and forth in time, and this it makes it very difficult to gain a better appreciation of the interconnectedness and progression of events during these thirty years. On the bright side, the narration is very good. In summary, those seeking a smattering of impressions of the Middle East from an English born and boarding school educated foreign news correspondent might find this book entertaining. For those of seeking to better understand the history and events of this period, the book is a disappointment.

    Title: Lonelyhearts
Subtitle: The Screwball World of Nathanael West and Eileen McKenney

    Narrator: Elisabeth Rodgers
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 21 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Nathanael West: novelist, screenwriter, playwright, devoted outdoorsman, was one of the most gifted and original writers of his generation, a comic artist whose insight into the brutalities of modern life proved prophetic. He is famous for two masterpieces: Miss Lonelyhearts (1933) and The Day of the Locust (1939). Seventy years later, The Day of the Locust remains the most penetrating novel ever written about Hollywood.
Eileen McKenney: accidental muse, literary heroine was the inspiration for her sister Ruth's humorous stories, My Sister Eileen, which led to stage, film, and television adaptations, including Leonard Bernstein s 1953 musical Wonderful Town. She grew up in Cleveland and moved to Manhattan at 21 in search of romance and adventure. She and her sister lived in a basement apartment in the Village with a street-level window into which men frequently peered. Husband and wife were intimate with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, Katharine White, S.J. Perelman, Bennett Cerf, and many of the literary, theatrical, and movie notables of their era.
With Lonelyhearts, biographer Marion Meade, whose Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin earned accolades from the Washington Post Book World ("Wonderful") to the San Francisco Chronicle ("Like looking at a photo album while listening to a witty insider reminisce about the images"), restores West and McKenney to their rightful places in the rich cultural tapestry of interwar America.
    Critic Reviews:
Ms. Meade deftly choreographs these boldface names as they rush to and fro between Hollywood and New York, those antipodes of 1930s writers. (Molly Haskell, The Wall Street Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Nathanael West, A Man of His Times and Ours
I always wondered about Nathanael West ... what kind of man he was. He seemed untouchable, unreachable, unteachable. He seemed a wraith, a ghost hovering over Hollywood. He seemed not my kind of writer and I knew very few readers who had read him. But, for some reason, he always fascinated me. I read around in his books -- to read around means just that. You don't read all the way through, you just go in an out of the writing. I read enough of him that way to get the idea that he was an extremely idiosyncratic writer who followed his own path to such an extent that, well, I found out I wasn't alone. Lots of people read around in his books. Few read them deeply. What was there about West that was so off-putting? If you read Marion Meade's terrific biography of Nathanael West and Eileen McKenney and their topsy-turvy world of fame, fortune and 1930s Great Depression, you will understand, as I have, what made West tick and what made the time of his life so bizarre. Nothing could be more up-and-down than West's love affair with writing. It was love and hate at first sight. As was almost everything he touched. He disliked school, he faked (with his parents' help) his academic career. He didn't like the prejudice he felt in being a Jew, so he faked his name. He faked just about everything except his talent and acceptance of hotel management. Sound odd enough for you? He was a truly great hotelier and he made his hotels into literary salons and they made money, and he was very successful. His other career, a little later, was writing screenplays.

    Members Reviews:
    Shallow and Dull.
What disappointed you about Ricky Gervais?
First half reads like an embellished Wikipedia entry. Second half reads like a 14-year-old recapping the plot of every episode of The Office. Boo. I'm sure Ricky Gervais' life is much more interesting than this book.
What could Michael Heatley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Dive deeper. More anecdotes, details and stories. Less recaps of The Office episodes.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance is too monotone. More inflection.
    Poor boring book
A very short, boring, unfunny book. A big disappointment. It is just like a historical relating of Gervis?s life and a resumen of the plot of each episode of The Office and Extras.
Very bad. The audio is very boring, no life or interest.

    Publisher's Summary:
Here is the delicious life of one of the most beloved figures in 20th-century American culture. With a swooping voice, an incredible sense of humor, and a passion for good food, Julia Child ushered in the nation's culinary renaissance.
In Julia Child: A Life, award-winning food writer Laura Shapiro tells the story of Child's unlikely career path, from California party girl to the coolheaded chief clerk in a World War II spy station, to a bewildered amateur cook, and, finally, to the Cordon Bleu in Paris, the school that inspired her calling.
A food lover who was quintessentially American, right down to her little-known recipe for classic tuna fish casserole, Shapiro's Julia Child personifies her own most famous lesson - that learning how to cook means learning how to live.
    Critic Reviews:
"Shapiro reminds us how Julia Child taught us not just how to cook but how to think about food." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Ann affectionate biography." (The Boston Globe)
    Members Reviews:
A nice small bio of Julia Child
A nice small bio of Julia Child. It obviously isn't easy to tell a story about someone's life when so much of it is devoted to cooking, but Ms. Shapiro is able to bring some dimension to the TV icon.
A Pleasant Insight of Julia Child
A delightful book that renewed my interest in food and got me browsing through the Julia Child cookbooks I own. One sees all the effort and hard work that she and her dedicated husband put into her TV shows. My husband and I enjoy cooking and since reading this book, we have regained some venture and enthusiasm in trying new dishes. And even if things don't always turn out, neither did Julia's. One learns from mistakes, goes on and tries again.
    Interesting
This was a very intimate story...it revealed Julia's character for the
reader in a very personable way. I feel like Julia has become a very
dear friend after reading this book, and her love of food has become
contagious. Julia shares her discoveries about food, life and love...
and the happiness each provided her. This book filled in the gaps
of fact and fiction about Julia. Bon Apetit to all.
    I love this book!
This book was exactly what I was looking for. It has just enough about Julia's background to let you know what lead her to become The French Chef without being overwhelmed with minutiae. The book focuses mainly on her love affair with food & its preparation and her drive to get people to go into the kitchen and cook. If you enjoy watching Julia, you'll enjoy this book.
    Fun, Quick Biography
Not a lot of new information here but a fun, quick biography of my favorite culinary personality. A nice addition to my cooking collection.

Scar Tissue far transcends the typical rock biography, because Anthony Kiedis is anything but a typical rock star. It is instead a searingly honest memoir - a compelling story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption. It is a story that could only have come out of Hollywood.

    Interesting Insight
Where does Scar Tissue rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is toward the top of my library in terms of quality. It is an interesting account, it's a very long book that deals in depth with each stage of the band's progression, with a solid delivery by the narrator. I'm not the hugest fan of the band, but I lived through their times and it's a really interesting account of that. I admire the author's candid account, it doesn't seem like he held much back in the writing of this memoir.
    Brilliant
What an incredible story!. And not only that Anthony is still alive. I've heard the Chilli Peppers commercial songs, but never been a mad huge fan. After hearing this I want to go out now and listen to every album as I feel I now have a small understanding of where it all comes from.
This warts and all story gives a great education on drugs and drug abuse and how the minds that are attached to these abused bodies work. I loved every minute, was gutted every time you lost the battle and cheered when you could stay sober. I had to listen to the last 3 hours in one hit - I couldn't turn off. To Anthony - Thank you for sharing so much.
To Rider - So very well read.
Could only be a hollywood life
Where does Scar Tissue rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Up near the top for sure. The narrator is fantastic & the book has got a great mix of highs, lows, funny bits, sad bits and so on that make it really easy to keep listening.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the stories behind the music. What was going on in their lives when they were doing which shows. Anthony Keidis very unconventional childhood is interesting, as is his continued functioning as a musician to such a high level, whilst leading such a dysfunctional long time drug interest!
Have you listened to any of Rider Strongs other performances before? How does this one compare?
Never, but this one was fantastic!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
No idea, but I would love them to make a film!
    great narrative
Would you listen to Scar Tissue again? Why?
A great read/listen and an indepth look into Swans crazy life. Would definitely recommend. Rider Strong is excellent!

Has there ever been a more extraordinary rock-star story than Ozzy Osbourne's? Born into a life so poor that the whole family slept in one room, Ozzy endured a tough upbringing. Music was his salvation, and his band Black Sabbath went on to change the music scene forever. But along with the rock and roll came the inevitable sex and drugs, and Ozzy fell into a long relationship with addictive substances.
The stories of Ozzy's days on the road are legendary - biting the head off a live bat, losing his best friend and writing partner Randy Rhoades in a tragic plane crash - but few know of the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of excess.
In the end, it was love that saved him: the love of his wife, Sharon, and his kids, Kelly, Jack and Aimee. In his highly anticipated autobiography, Ozzy comes clean - in all senses.
