    Title: Flaubert
    Subtitle: A Life
    Author: Geoffrey Wall
    Narrator: John Lee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-15-09
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Geoffrey Wall gives us Flaubert in all his contradictory splendor: as a man who lived quietly at home in the sphere of his widowed mother, writing novels at a rate of five words an hour; as an irregular visitor to Paris, where he participated in important literary and social milieus; and as a passionate traveler whose trips put him in company with courtesans, actresses, acrobats, gypsies, idiots, and simpletons of every stripe, until he returned home "to live like an oyster". Flaubert's outwardly calm and inwardly turbulent life created the complex, intriguing world of his imperishable novels and stories.

    Critic Reviews:
"The clearest, most satisfyingly biographical account of Flaubert to date." (Independent)
"Extraordinarily accomplished....The result of this nimble thinking, and even sharper writing, is one of the best biographies of this or any other year." (Sunday Telegraph)

    Best Recent Biography
One of the other reviewers of this biography wrote:
"This is a disappointing biography of Flaubert. It discusses neither Flaubert's intellectual development nor his books in any depth. The author makes much of the silliest and must vulgar aspects of Flaubert's personality (as if he felt a special affinity for these topics) while skirting any serious aesthetic or literary issues. Flaubert was certainly a peculiar, irritating man, but Wall, like most celebrity biographers of our day, stresses these aspects to try to squeeze some cheap laughs and prurient snickers from his subject matter. Flaubert's strange love affair with Louise Colet is narrated so sophomorically that it's practically unreadable. The book ends abruptly, summarizing Flaubert's last few years in a few paragraphs, as if the biographer couldn't stand it anymore himself. The best thing about the book is the sprinkling of excerpts from Flaubert's letters. The worst thing is the biographer's low-brow, childish, psychobabbling voice trying to make sense of a literary genius he had no business trying to write a life of. It's as if Seinfeld tried to write a book about Homer."
A better simile would be: it's as if this reviewer read an excellent biography then trashed it because it's neither literary criticism nor a "deep" psychological study.
Is the reviewer aware that Sartre wrote a massive uncompleted study of Flaubert that would satisfy his dubious wish for "highbrow" (as opposed to Wall's "low-brow") psychobabble. Not that Sartre is a reliable guide to Flaubert, you understand: he's really an obsessed leftist who believes his warped understanding of Freud and Marx is the skeleton key to his victims, most notably Genet, whom he reduced to a bloodless abstraction in his soi-disant "introduction" to that writer's collected works. (His book on Baudelaire at least has the benefit of brevity, if not clarity.)
I see the biographer's task as giving an account of the events of his subject's life, and even if that includes the books he wrote as the main events, then he can hardly be expected to write detachable essays in depth about them.

    So funny!
Russell Baker is a very funny guy. I have loved reading these collected columns and have actually laughed right out loud at some of them. I am pretty confident I will be reading more of his stuff when I need a little humorous pick-me-up.
Arte Johnson is the perfect reader for this book. Such fun!

Title: Flying Burrito Brothers' Gilded Palace of Sin (33 1/3 Series)

    Narrator: Andy Caploe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-08-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Overshadowed by Parsons, this album remains an anomaly in the country rock genre, a map in miniature of a moment in music, and warrants discussion as more than part of the Gram Parsons legacy.
    Editorial Reviews:
Andy Caploes rich, engaging performance guides the listener through Bob Prohels comprehensive and revelatory examination of one of the tragically overlooked records of the 1960s; a fusion of rock, folk, and country unlike anything that preceded it and whose influence can still be felt in both mainstream and alternative music over 40 years after its release.
The social and political upheaval of the late 60s figure prominently in Proehls analysis of the lyrics and sonic landscape of The Gilded Palace of Sin, and Caploes animated delivery captures the dynamism of Proehls prose in this fascinating listen.
    Members Reviews:
Iconic Album Deserves Far Better Than This
Continuum Books' selection of The Gilded Palace of Sin for its 33 1/3 series is absolutely deserved. The album stands as a trailblazing standard of the "country-rock" genre and Gram Parson's finest effort. Unfortunately, author Bob Proehl doesn't come anywhere near doing justice to this iconic masterpiece. This is more of a brief history of the Flying Burrito Brothers than a close look at their debut album. There are no absolutely no details of the 1968 recording sessions. Proehl simply did not bother doing the necessary research. The album's producers, Henry Lewy and Larry Marks, aren't even mentioned. Neither can be found any reference to drummers Popeye Phillips or Eddie Hoh who played on five of the eleven tracks. Quite indicative of the author's casual treatment of the subject is his regurgitation of the fallacious claim that "Christine's Tune (Devil in Disguise)" was written about Christine "Miss Christine" Frka of the GTO's while the co-author of the song, Chris Hillman, is on record stating it was written about Christine Hinton, David Crosby's girlfriend at the time and the former president of the Byrds' fan club (see Hot Burritos: The True Story of the Flying Burrito Brothers, p. 102). Such a blatant error is inexcusable. Perhaps Proehl assumed he could get by with his sardonic jargon instead of doing some actual interviews or clocking time at the library. If the reader can get past the many typographical errors what they're left with is information that's sketchy at best and erroneous at worst. I definitely felt ripped off after shelling out $8.00 for the ebook edition.
So You Thought You Knew Country
This concise book should come with a cd copy of "The Gilded Palace of Sin," then you could listen to and read about an album which, although shunned at the time, proved to be one of the most influential records in popular music's history. Hillman, Parsons, Chris Etheridge and Sneeky Pete Kleinow completely abandoned the popular trends of the late sixties, and looked back to the purity and essence of American Country Music. While looking back, they brought their modern talents to the table: Hillman and Parsons could sing and harmonize like country Everly Brothers, and Sneeky Pete tore the cover off of what was normal pedal steel playing, he created waves, almost symphony like, and then could just as easily play the best sounding honky-tonk music you ever heard.

    Title: The Lucy Family Alphabet
    Author: Judith Lucy
    Narrator: Judith Lucy
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-29-08
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 17 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
So Judith decided it was time to write the full story of her parents and her childhood. And here it is, a reference book on all things Lucy from: A is for Adoption (she is) to C is for Cleaning (they didn't) and for Counselling (you'll find out why she had a lot of it) to D is for Diets (she was put on one at eight) to H is for Heart Attack (her father's) to M is for Make Up (her father's) to N is for Nuts (there was a falling out over testicles) to R is for Review (to do with Nuts) to T is for Tanscendental Meditation (it didn't work) to X is for Xmas (when a lot of this started) and beyond...
In amongst the gags Judith explores the people her parents were and the impact of finding out - 25 - that she was adopted. We meet Judith's birth mother but learn that ultimately it was her very unusual parents who made her who she is today.
The Lucy Family Alphabet is funny and ruthlessly honest, but also a moving tribute to the lunatics who raised one of Australia's best-known comedians.

    I really enjoyed it
Would you listen to The Lucy Family Alphabet again? Why?
I enjoyed this immensely, I already liked Judith Lucy's style of comedy. There were many points of laughterHer parents reminded me of mine and I am adopted and can identify with her issues, so that may influence my appreciation for her dry humour.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lucy Family Alphabet?
Many of the anecdotes were funny and sad all at the same time, quite moving - poignant.
Have you listened to any of Judith Lucys other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to Judith's stand up comedy. I already enjoyed her dry wit. Her delivery definitely adds to the book. I don't think it would be as good to read it as a printed book, unless you know Judith's style really well and can imagine her reading it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to it for hours at a time because I enjoyed it, though it is broken up into so many short parts, and the stories are from various points in time, so it could be easily be listened to in short bursts
    Any additional comments?
This book is like a big stand up show rather than a novel. There is a couple of stories per letter of the alphabet
Amazing Insight To A Great Australian Comic!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Recommended for many reasons. Adoption, Family, Career and Strength - with let's not forget Comedy is delivered in this Audio Book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lucy Family Alphabet?
    Adoption
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
Intersting but its not a humor book
If you are expecting a sidesplitting tale then look for another book, this is Judith's story and it is a pretty sad tale punctuated by some classic Lucy humor. I enjoyed it, but by about halfway through I got the picture that she had a crappy upbringing and only listened to the rest because there were a few bits of comedy in there. If it were not narrated by Judith it would have been garbage, such is the content.
    Worth a listen
I've never really been a Judith Lucy fan but I've warmed to her in recent times.

    Publisher's Summary:
Crossbearer is the powerful, poignant story of how a streetwise, cynical man found faith in some of the most mundane places: a game of baseball, a child's photo of a cloud, a dying mother's dying roses.
A startling personal story, Crossbearer, written by a master memoirist, reveals a fresh, absolutely inspiring look at the importance of faith, values, family, and love.

    Foul Language
Considering the title of the book I was appalled by the constant use of foul language. It was unnecessary and took away from the message the author was trying to convey.
Do Not Waste Your Time or Credit
Not anything close to an inspirational book here! I am so sorry I wasted the time and credit on this book! Don't reward this character who thinks he is "little God" with this awful litany of his torrid lifestyle that he misguidedly thought was research ... he still hasn't gotten through what it is to live a good and decent life, though for over 50 years he lived a life that was detestable and immoral and says he is now "saved" by writing and doing a few of the correct things. He isn't very far along the road to be held up as an example of a person who has made it back to an ethically moral life. A long way to go yet, bud!

    Publisher's Summary:
As America expanded relentlessly westward, Muir witnessed the plunder and exploitation of the land and became a driving force in efforts to protect the natural world. A modest and private man, married and father of two daughters, his conservationist views forced himinto battle with powerful political and industrial interests. He influenced four U.S. presidents to sponsor legislation that protected forests and established or expanded America's national parks.
    Members Reviews:
Poor narration and a confusing approach
John Muir's story is a fascinating and compelling one. However, the authors attempt at a thematic approach fell short of the mark, resulting in significant repetition and confusing jumping around timelines. The narrator would have been fine had he not attempted a Scottish accent at times, which was truly woeful and I doubt he has ever listened to a Scottish accent in his life.
