Language

It's really funny when I listen to the characters talk to each other. The conversations rarely feel genuine unless its the sheriff. The sheriff talks like a sheriff. I had a hard time with the other characters, liking or disliking them... believing them at all. I am going to say it might be because this is abridged. Other than that.... I would be happy if most of the people in this book get eaten.

Still, its an average to below-average listen.

The story about the ex-husband coming to visit in the middle of winter is the kind of creepy stuff I love..Too bad the narrator was so terrible, her voice sounds like she is on auto-tune.. I feel like I could have narrated it better.

Wrong Choice of Narrator

Would you try another book from H. P. Lovecraft and/or Gareth David-Lloyd and Staten Eliot ?

Lovecraft is a master of the genre. He may be repetitive and somewhat predictable, but his stories seem to always manage to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. David-Lloyd on the other hand was not the correct choice for narrator.

What other book might you compare Imprisoned by the Pharaohs and Other Stories to and why?

Obviously it's comparable to the rest of Lovecraft's work. The titular story is very much a product of the Pulp Magazine era.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gareth David-Lloyd and Staten Eliot ?

David-Lloyd's pronunciation of names and places was horrible and inconsistent.

Was Imprisoned by the Pharaohs and Other Stories worth the listening time?

Absolutely. If you like horror stories, Indiana Jones, Egyptology, or all of the above, it's a fun little read.

Dull

From one of my favorite childhood writers, I couldn't bare to finish this story. Dull is all I can offer.

Good but not his best work.

Accomplished, descriptive writing though not Lovecraft's best. First two stories were a bit slow-moving, third story is shorter and contains more action. All are atmospheric.

King at his best

If you could sum up The Talisman in three words, what would they be?

Magical, sweet and dark

Who was your favorite character and why?

Wolf was my favorite character. His innocence and loyalty made me want to jump into the book and cuddle him.

Have you listened to any of Frank Mullers other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to a couple of his other audio books. I enjoy the way he presents a certain genre of story but if you are not use to his style, and with a long audio book, I can understand why some people find it difficult to listen to him for extended periods.

Who was the most memorable character of The Talisman and why?

Again, Wolf. His innocence was just so sweet and his genuine affection/love for Jack was beautiful. He was dragged into a world not his own by Jack, suffered from it, but was never resentful and stayed true to his

Any additional comments?

I loved the two world/twinner/time-travel concept - its Ying and Yang. The story shows the good and evil of humans and how destructive we can be.... BUT ... it also shows how a human boy can reverse that evil in the name of love.

The Talisman

This is the second book I have listened to on my Iphone and loved it. Being new to audible I found it slightly bizzare being read to at my age ( 27 plus GST)however I have loved both books and narrators. Frank has a deep voice and the further into the book you get the more engrossed you get :) This was a great book and Frank did it justice, especially playing Wolf. I am now about to download The Black House and am glad Frank is narrating again as this will blend very well. Job well done mate :)

Epic

Stephen King has always been one of my favourite writers. I am not at surprised that this book has also turned out to be a masterpiece.

Hard going

I bought this to listen with my teenage son. May be it is narrated by someone for whom English is not their first language as the the pronounciation of several words is wrong and confusing. It sounds as though it is a 'robot' reading the story. No emotion and generally we found it hard going to listen to. For a first book this is not a good choice. Give it a miss!

Narrations worthy of James's efforts

Gareth David-Lloyd's narrations --- especially of "Casting the Runes" --- are the best I have heard, and I have heard a lot of James readings. Ian Fairbairn is well-suited to the tales he reads, too. A slight disappointment came at the end of the selection; Bayldon's reading is not his best. He was a good character actor; perhaps he was unwell at the time of recording? The sound quality is otherwise excellent. I have since gotten Vols. 2 & 3, and recommend them as well. A must for M.R. James aficionados.

Wonderfully atmospheric

I was unfamiliar with Mr. James prior to this audiobook. I found the stories extremely creepy and atmospheric. Its rare to find terror created in subtle ways. i thought the readers did an excellent job of adding to the suspense, although in some cases my American ears had to struggle to the heavy English accents.

Entertaining

The stories are old-school, but as such quite enjoyable. GDL's narration is excellent, unhurried, he does voices and accents superbly. Fairbairn is also good, but Bayldon is bellow par.

I found these stories difficult to decipher. Did Gareth David-Lloyd have a severe head cold? I do not want musick plinckity-planking during a recorded reading; it is stupid at best. A dud;

Good, Fast-Paced Story

After reading classics and non-fiction for a few months, I was dying for a good horror story and this did not disappoint. The plot line develops very quickly, has many twists and turns along the way, and the ending is a satisfying one. My only complaint is with the reader, her voice just seemed to weak for the strong female lead character and was distracting at times.

Great Book

I loved this. I bought this on a whim and do not regret it. It is fast paced and keeps you guessing. The anticipation of finding out who and why and what is almost too much. It is a great book. Do get it!

couldn't finish it

I had to stop listening when I just didn't care if the main character made it or not. The gory details kept repeating themselves and the general content could not hold my attention. If you like the style of Stephen King you will probably not like this listen.

Unfortunate choice of narrator

The narrator apparently thought she was reading Mother Goose to children. Her soft, childlike voice never conveyed fear or drama. The novel would have been better served by another narrator.

Not worth the time

Maybe a different reader would have made a difference. Her tone made it much less a horror story than, as another reviewer said, like she was reading a bed time story. I was very disappointed. I wish I had read it rather than listened to it.

Good Stuff

Stories were quite good, although a bit uneven i.e. some were just good and some were very good. The same can be said for the narration. A bit uneven but, overall, I'm glad I got this book.

Disappointing

After viewing the quality and quantity of stories in this collection I was excited to listen. Once I started, however, I was very disappointed by the monotonous, uninspired performance of the main reader. It was difficult to even stay focused on the stories: he's that bad. It also didn't help that the audio quality is poor-very tinny sounding.

Not much into these, I guess they were good, not what I was looking for.
