This was a lovely listen, if such a word can be used to describe underpinnings that are quite gruesome, but never dwelled on excessively. The narrator has an engaging voice with subtle yet consistent changes for different characters, and her accent made the listen that much more enjoyable.

Very Entertaining

I really enjoyed this well written suspense. It's easy to symphathize with the characters' predictament and the story kept my interest right to the end. Would love more like this one.

A Delight!

I am a member of the TV generation but I must say that I look forward to spending some quiet time alone each evening listening to "The Lodger" on my iPod. I can't believe how well written this book is. There's a lot of suspense and it keeps building! The narrator's performance is perfect; I can't read my kids a bedtime story using as many different voices as this narrator does. Her ability to characterize each voice helps the listener follow the dialog easily - something I've struggled with when I've listened to other books. A+

Great suspense - not much of an ending

I enjoyed almost every minute of this audio book. The narrator is excellent. She makes you believe she's from 19th century England.

The suspense is great and keeps you wanting to listen. But beware - the ending is bland. But its still worth a listen.

Fantastic Narration

Lorna Raver simply nails this wonderfully subtle story about a couple who begin to believe that their lodger is a serial killer. The suspicions of the couple are never actually spoken aloud, but the evidence they witness will bring the listener to harbor the same dark thoughts. Raver not only delivers living characters to our ears, she also keeps the narrative zooming along. No wonder this is a crime classic! Book and narrator: perfect!

Brilliant and Scary

The description says ages 8 to adult, but I'm glad I waited until my daughter was 11 before listening to these stories. Some are quite scary and leave lasting impressions. Wonderful stuff, though! She's a real treasure!

Frightfully Fun Southern Storytelling

I chose this book Because I had enjoyed a couple of Ms. Reneaux's stories on The Moonlight Road webpage. I was not disappointed. These stories have the flavor of old southern storytelling, and are the sorts of fun, spooky tales for an entire family to enjoy on an October night around a bonfire. If you still have fond memories of Halloween nights and campfire tales, and if you love the unique traditions and folktales of Louisiana, you will certainly enjoy this audiobook.

Best all around

These stories are well thought out and read very well. There's a hint of scare and a good dose of morality without the least bit of preachiness. These all seem like timeless stories that have been handed down for centuries.

Great book; wonderful reading

Turn of the Screw is a wonderful book -- a kind of complicated ghost story that showcases the complexities of the interactions between adults and children. This particular reading is wonderful, and the sound quality is excellent.

Well read intriguing novel

I once read some of this book aloud to friends on a long car trip. Many of the sentences are a joy ride on their own--you don't know where the sentence will take you, and what the journey will be like. Such was this reading of the book--only far better to hear this exquisite narrator revel in the delight of the sentence structure. The story is great in its own right--a mystery novel that fully holds its own--but the plot pales compared to the joy expressed by the narrator in the reading of it.

A Rookie Governess Gets in over Her Head

Henry James' classic gothic ghost story, The Turn of the Screw (1898), opens with Douglas reading to a group of friends a "real" story of "uncanny ugliness and horror and pain." It's the manuscript handwritten by the woman who was his and his sister's governess 40 years ago. She's been dead for twenty years, and she never shared her manuscript and story with anyone but Douglas, who loved her.

The story is her account of what happened when at age twenty she got her first position as governess, taking charge of the ten-year-old nephew and eight-year-old niece of a handsome, gallant, and wealthy man. Despite the master disclosing that the previous governess died, that he would never visit Bly, the Essex country mansion where the kids would be living, That she should never trouble him--but never, never: neither appeal nor complain nor write about anything, and that she was to take care of everything, she agreed to take the job because of its high salary and because she'd been smitten with him and wanted to please him.

Her first impressions of Bly and her situation are favorable. The girl, Flora, impresses her as charming, beautiful, and angelic, like one of Raphaels holy infants. And even though a letter immediately comes from the boy's boarding school saying without explanation that he has been permanently expelled, when the governess meets the incredibly beautiful Miles, possessed as he is of something divine and a positive fragrance of purity, she can't believe he could have done anything bad, and figures that he must have been too innocent for the world of boarding schools. Therefore she decides to keep Miles at home for a while to tutor him as well as Flora.

All goes well until one day on the Bly grounds she sees a stranger who leaves after uncannily staring her down. When she minutely describes the man to the good natured, illiterate housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, the woman says that it must be Peter Quint, the master's low-born former valet, who'd been put in charge of everything (including the children's education) a while ago, and who had subsequently died! So it must be a supernatural visitation.

Very good name for the book!

Holy cow this book is nuts, or psycho I guess I should say! Tim Miller is a very creative author! Dee Butchery does an excellent job with the narration. I hope I never find myself in a town like Psycoville!

Highly disturbing!

Having read the ebook, I knew what horror awaited me in this story. Not for the faint of heart, this terrifying trip through small-town Texas is a lesson in anatomy and debauchery. Humans are the cruelest animals, and Miller goes above and beyond with this story. The voice actor is tremendously talented, and I would love to hear more from her. Overall, Psychoville is my favorite book by this author.

Who cares about the book? I'd listen just for the narration. Unsworth is a true actor.

This time there's a murder in heaven that eventually leads to the unthinkable! Great story with twists you may not see coming. "Fool" is becoming adept at detecting, but there is more in Heaven And Hell than we can imagine!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This was several short stories, dramatized. The dramatizations were good, but the stories were a little outlandish and unbelievable.

TERRIBLE ACTING - BAD AMATEUR

The acting is so amateur it is painful. So disappointed! Expected much more from the Colonial Radio Players, especially when we are PAYING FOR THIS! but after listening to this I looked into more plays by the Colonials and the acting is exactly the same - terrible! I will keep well away.

Another most worthy offering

Would you consider the audio edition of HorrorBabble's Classic Horror: Volume 2 to be better than the print version?

Being that I first became acquainted to these readers through their works, I would say a bias is in place.

What was one of the most memorable moments of HorrorBabble's Classic Horror: Volume 2?

The Rats In The Walls features some very fine showmanship from Mr. Gordon.

What does Ian Gordon and Jennifer Gill bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Per usual, neither fails to bring life to their readings. This holds true with the near-ending to The Rats in the Walls.

Who was the most memorable character of HorrorBabble's Classic Horror: Volume 2 and why?

Churlish though it will sound, I never fail to laugh at the absurdity of what Mr. De La Poer named his cat, and I never fail to salute Mr. Gordon's faith to the written story.

The only fault I can find in this and their other compilation is the lack of story titles in the chapter listing.

Excellent, looking forward to more!

Loved every moment! The Ensouled Violin I particularly enjoyed, the ending had me completely engrossed.

Great choices of story and great performances, my only comment is that, since you have access to both a male and female voice, use them for when male or female characters are speaking. Particularly in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Which was great otherwise, another of my favorites from this), Jennifer's male voice was a little jarring.

Other than that small detail, loved all of it and am looking forward to the next one :)

fantastic collection the horror babble guys are great the stories they collect and read never cease to entertain and their narrators are both fantastic, i look forward to more volumes of their horror classics and their narration of the king in yellow
