Title: The Sermons & Meditations Of John Donne

Author: John Donne

Narrator: Herbert Marshall

Format: Abridged

Length: 33 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-31-08

Publisher: Saland Publishing

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes

Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

When John Donne stood in the pulpit of St. Paul's, the lyricism of a great poet fused with the devotion of a holy man. There were no prepared sermons, for he spoke only from notes, and what he said was later transcribed from memory. But the sermons were overwhelming; for behind him was a lifetime devoted, as poet, philosopher and devine, to God.

The title's not quite true

It's only half an hour of one of his most famous; "no man is an island...", "ask not for whom the bell tols..." A meditation on illness, health, death, the individual and society. Beutifully read. However the lively accustics blurr some of the faster sections into 'extreamly difficult to make out'. Well worth picking up in the sales though!

Title: The Early Poetry of Robert Frost, Volume I

Subtitle: A Boy's Will

Author: Robert Frost

Narrator: Robert Bethune

Format: Unabridged

Length: 41 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-27-08

Publisher: Freshwater Seas

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes

Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

Frost weaves together themes of innocence and experience, love and joy and pain, in a sequence of poems that relate to each other while also standing alone as vivid, fresh expressions of intense feeling that speak as freshly today as they did when they were written. This volume includes some of his best-known and best-loved works, such as "Wind and Window Flower", "Love and a Question", "Storm Fear", and "October". As we move from poem to poem, it is fascinating to hear a young master discovering his voice.

A poor second

Having purchased a two cassette audio book of Robert Frost reading his own poetry some years ago, I had hoped that this purchase would obviate the need the laborious task of having to transfer them into digital format for the computer and my various MP3 players and entertainment tablet. Unfortunately, I can only say that the person reading Frost's poetry in this audio book, though with perfect diction, lacked any feel for or understanding of the poems he was reading. While it may be a bit unfair to compare the reader to the poet himself, nevertheless his performance was disappointing and now I'm reconciled to having to transfer the audio cassettes to digital format--very disappointing.
