Ongoing Struggle between Good and Evil

I never understood this part of the Bible so I tried to listen to it several times in its entirety. That did not really help either. This John of Patmos is a complex character with a lot of visions -- Seven seals, seven trumpets, a lamb with seven horns and seven eyes, 24 elders on 24 thrones. He even mentions my home town of Philadelphia where those who overcome will be made a pillar of the church. Maybe I should get busy on that.

I think all of this is describing the struggle between good and evil which has now occupied nearly 2000 years since our hero found himself on the island of Patmos. Unfortunately I think foolishness may have the upper hand right now but the tides are constantly changing. I never understood the authorship debate either. This John of Patmos must be the Apostle. I can't imagine some other guy named John could convince the church leaders to slip his writings into the Bible when they had so many other established and prolific authors.

All in all I think we should try to understand more of the Revelations but we will be better off with Paul and Peter, who by coincidence were martyred on this day as I write. I have a church bulletin with Paul depicted holding a book. While he was a man of words, he would not know what is a book. It would have been better to show him holding a Kindle or his laptop.

I don't mean to disparage John the Apostle, actually I find his accounts the best. That man knows how to capture dialogue and tell a story. Paul was a mean-spirited fellow (don't suggest you start letters by addressing the town people as stupid) but he knows how we should live, even though he himself never experienced some things like marriage. There is a lot to be said for keen observations and social criticism even 2000 years out.

What did you like best about Holy Bible, Volume 21? What did you like least?

The reading etc is fine, but it is one big file, not separate tracks to where you could put on an iPod and re-listen to certain sections or chapters over and over again if a person wished, not happy about that.

2 Esdras has 7 visions that are in the style of Revelation but they're each fully explained --

So it's kind of a "how to " read revelations for dummies kind of thing.

Too cool -- not sure why protestant bibles decided to pull these books but am glad I finally read them after being a Christian for 20 years.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Angel Uriel - because he teaches how to interpret visions.

What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I can listen at work.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was amazed at the visions and the interpretations.

Any additional comments?

All Christians should read the apocrypha whether or not you believe the pope is the head of the church. Don't let your bias get in the way of understanding God's word.

Part 4 of 4, Of the Apocrypha

I am ashamed to have taken so many years to finally read the Apocrypha but that bucket list item is now complete. The reading of this part and the historic ties to the Old Testament was very educational and clarified many of my thoughts as to what was actually in this section. These 4 Part Series of the Apocrypha is well worth the time and effort expended. Nether will you have any regrets.

Easy to listen and understand

Hearing this version of the text makes it easier to comprehend. 2 Esdras has some weighty context. It's even better to hear it in some ways than it would be to read. Because I can try to picture the images without centering my focus on a book. That could go for any book. This isn't the best reading of a book I've heard. But considering the rarity of this text, it's well worth the price.

Performed Flawlessly

This section performed performed flawlessly (iTunes version), and I couldn't be more pleased.

All-in-all as a complete work, I am very happy with this audio bible. I like the way the New Testament was broken down allowing you to find certain books easier with just the right amount of time per reading for me.

I especially like their choice for reader. His voice was smooth and clear, very easy to understand. I have been listening to audio books for a long time now.

Years ago, I had several on tape cassettes and then CDs, I used them mainly for long trips in my car and I liked them just fine except for the shear number of cassettes it took for a book of any length at all.

These days in my 60s, I have a little trouble understanding some of the readers. I've even had to pass on a few books because I can't make out most words read by one or two of them. I realize the problem is my hearing and not their speaking but that doesn't help me much.

The reader of this work doesn't pose that problem and if you're like me, maybe he won't for you. I highly recommend this version. (iTunes)

clear, articulate, good for studying God's word

easy to listen to, good pace, excellent speaker.

I wish they made these in the King James Version -- unicorns is replaced here with ostraches in the NKJ.

am using this for a Bible study class, and have listed to Job about 8 times in the last week.

leaves me hungry for more!!

Nice when slowed down

A little too fast at 1 x speed, perfect at 0.75. Would've been better to have George Sarris, as Bob lacks intonation which would help to emphasize certain passages.

Some one should gather top preachers like Piper, Voddie and Sinclair Ferguson to do a version which highlights and paused and stressed at all the right points of scripture, to deliver a more dynamic solo voice version than this, and less overly acted version than Zondervans dramatized versions.
