Title: The Modern Scholar

Subtitle: The Bible and the Roots of Western Literature

Author: Adam Potkay, Monica Brezinski Potkay

Narrator: Adam Potkay

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 51 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-04-08

Publisher: Recorded Books

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 29 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles

Publisher's Summary:

The goal of this audio course is to provide listeners with a literary and historical overview of the Bible, from its opening in Genesis to its ending in the Book of Revelation, and also with a sense of some of the ways in which the Bible has influenced the literary traditions of the West. We'll be exploring key scenes, stories, forms, and books of the Bible through the methods of literary and cultural analysis.

We'll be asking questions such as: what, in literary terms, might a Biblical story mean? How does its form and style contribute to its meaning? How has the story been read by other readers, from influential theologians of the past (such as St. Augustine and John Calvin) to literary critics of our own day? Finally, in what ways has the story had an impact on the literature, as well as the larger cultural life, of Europe and America? We pay particular attention to the ways in which the Bible has influenced the canon of English and American literature, including Shakespeare, Charlotte Brontë, and Robert Frost.

Falsely advertised....

What would have made (28) Acts, The Word of Promise Audio Bible: NKJV better?

Actually getting the product that was advertised....I ended up with totally different voices...it sounded like the next generation version but I wanted the one with the deep voices that the sample played.....This is the second time this has happened to me from audible...

Has (28) Acts, The Word of Promise Audio Bible: NKJV turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes...It's not Thomas Nelson company's fault...it's audibles for not putting the right product on

How could the performance have been better?

Actually getting the same one as the sample

Comfort one another with these words!

The scriptures chosen for this audio book were intelligently chosen read and introduced. The familiar RSV translation was employed throughout. As a Catholic I am familiar with all the bible passages recited herein from the Mass and devotional literature, however I criticize the producers for not providing a pdf file with the citations (i.e. Psalm 22) of the passages recited therein for future reference, as the are not given in this audio book.

NO GREATER COMFORT!

depended on it nightly - narrator's voice was most comforting as well. would recommend this to any of my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus

Would like to see more like this.

Perfect for times when too low or ill to listen to ordinary reading. Comforting, soothing, encouraging, helpful.

Comforting

Excellent choice of biblical characters and the narrator was just right with tone, and inflection.

Enjoyed the selection of verses.

Easy to listen to when suffering, not to fast or slow.

I enjoyed the combination of stories, verses, interspersed with relaxing music.

Well worth the price for peace.

I look forward to listening to this more.

Easy to listen to, gentle, encouraging words authentic and just what I need in times of feeling overwhelmed.

Watch out for commercials

I bought this to listen to with my children. Between the books of the Bible there are commercials for Mercy Ministries. These are NOT appropriate for children. I am very disappointed that these commercials were not disclosed BEFORE I bought this.

Love it!

At first, I thought I was going to be annoyed by the music in the back ground, but after a few minutes, I tuned it out easily. I really like hearing different woman tell the story of the Bible. They read it with such emotion.

Title: The Old Testament (Unabridged Selections)

Author: Naxos AudioBooks

Narrator: Philip Madoc, Anton Lesser

Format: Highlights

Length: 7 hrs and 50 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-06-00

Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 15 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles

Publisher's Summary:

Here are the greatest and best-loved stories from the Old Testament of the Bible, stories which can be read as much for their human, literary, and historical appeal as for their religious meaning. The selection ranges from childhood favorites like David and Goliath, to key moments in Jewish history (such as Exodus), and also includes some of the finest poetry in the Old Testament (the Song of Solomon, for example).

Editorial Reviews:

These beautifully narrated selections from the King James Version are peppered with classical music selections from the Naxos catalogue. Production, performances, and editing are top-notch. Featuring an ensemble of four actors, all are high caliber, and give careful thoughtful interpretations. Michael Sheen and Josette Simon are especially memorable.

Members Reviews:

Excellent!

A superb narration by dramatic actors. The narrators are well chosen & they speak the King James text with the dramatic effect that stage actors can have. The only reason I am dropping one star down to four stars is that this is only a part of the Old Testament. While the selections are well chosen and all the best known events are present, it is simply not the complete Old Testament. The MP3 sounds great.

Magestic performances of favorite passages

I loved all the performances here. (Id listen to Anton Lesser read assembly directions for a lawn mower!) With the music, Id give it ten stars if I could. Ive never found a disappointing Naxos title, but this one is exceptionally well done. Ill be listening to the New Testament selections next.

Note: The title clearly says both that this is abridged and that these are selections, so no one should expect the whole Old Testament, especially at this length!
