Nevada Barr quickly attracted the attention of mystery fans when her first Anna Pigeon mystery, Track of the Cat, appeared. Now she immerses the intrepid park ranger in a perilous search that will take her far below the waters of Lake Superior. As Anna spends her days patrolling its shores, the surface of Lake Superior fills with tourists. In the depths below lie an ancient ship and the bones of its sailors. But when two tourists dive down to see the wreck, they discover that a new body has joined the skeletal crew. As Anna tries to discover how and why, she encounters secrets darker and more deadly than the waters surrounding the corpse. Filled with suspense, A Superior Death is also laced with Anna Pigeon's self-deprecating humor. "She [Anna Pigeon] is a captivating, daredevil detective whose adventures will delight mystery readers." (School Library Journal)
"Barr, a park ranger, provides plenty of authentic details about life in the great outdoors, and her deft plotting and appealingly quirky characters give her story plenty of punch. Anna Pigeon is tough-minded, strong, sensitive, vulnerable, and funny." (Booklist)

    Lake Superior is a character
This is the first book I have read in the Anna Pigeon series. I bought it on Audible because it is set in one of my favorite places in the world: Lake Superior. I really loved the descriptions of life on the lake, which agreed with my experiences of being there. I liked that the heroine is a park ranger who uses her knowledge of science and nature to solve a mystery.
    Save your money
I have listened to and read many Barr novels, finding them enjoyable and giving me a chance to get in touch with my "feninine side." this was not even close to her usual quality. The usual interesting descriptions of the parks was tepid, and the dialog was trite to the extreme. Rosenblat did her best with the naration, but even she couldn't save this one.
    Great mystery, totally enjoyed it
I am not usually a mystery reader but I enjoyed this one very much. The author creates memorable characters and beautiful description. I grew up in Michigan and spend a lot of time in the "UP." I also spent a summer volunteering in a national park and I think Ms. Barr has really captured these environments perfectly. Funny, but many of the characters seemed familiar to me. I found a bio on her and found that she grew up near Lassen Park where I volunteered! The book not only brought back happy memories but also entertained me thoroughly.
    It Was Okay
My main issue with this book is that it is extremely slow. The characters and plot are interesting but it should have ended sooner.
    A Superior Story
Would you consider the audio edition of A Superior Death to be better than the print version?
    Well I haven't yet
Who was your favorite character and why?
This is only my third Ann Pigeon story. Nevada Barr does a very nice job of building upon the character. We learn more about her (and her past) all the time. It unfolds. I also like Molly, Ann's sister in NYC.

Her death had raised a host of tough questions. The cops suspected homicide, but they could find neither motive nor suspect. Even the means were mysterious: Lorna's body was so badly decomposed when it was discovered that they couldn't be certain she hadn't died of natural causes. In the way of overworked cops everywhere, the case was gradually shifted to the back burner and became another unsolved file. Only Lorna's mother kept it alive, consumed by the certainty that somebody out there had gotten away with murder. So she hired Kinsey Millhone, P.I.

    Abridged--almost never a good bet!
While waiting for the next installment of the Kinsey books to come out (V is for Vengeance was the last one, so we are almost at the end of the alphabet) - I thought I would go back and pick up a few that I've missed. Since I really like the voice of Judy Kaye, I did not download the unabridged version. Big Mistake
Almost no character development, and jumping from one scene to the next with literally no connection between events was so frustrating. Hard to even tell what the story was actually about. No one to blame but myself- but maybe this will save someone else from doing the same thing.
    Live and learn
    Love Kinsey!
Judy Kaye is the greatest reader ever, bringing Kinsey to life! No other reader will ever be Kinsey. Thanks Ms. Grafton
    It's all in the narrator
I love listening to Sue Grafton's series, narrated by one of the BEST - Judy Kaye!
    Fantastic book!

No one is safe from a killer who stalks his prey in the blackness of night...and whose grotesque crimes are revealed by circling buzzards under the cruel summer sun.

So Exciting! Like watching a film!
This book is sooooo gripping. I loved Cabinet of Curiosities and because the previous reviewer mentioned Special Agent Pendergast was in this book too, I decided to download it. I wasn't disapointed - it was even better than Cabinet of Curiosities! I am now firmly in love with Agent Pendergast and just itching for more.
The atmospheric music was brilliant, as was the ending.
The narrator is especially good - able to create seperate voices for each character in an exceptionaly talented way.
I have downloaded lots of books from Audible and this one will go down as one of my all time favorites. A ripping yarn, scary, atmospheric, gripping and delicious.
    Awesome
Pendergast is one of the coolest characters I've run across. He would make a great old world vampire- the ones with class and manners but are spooky as you know what...and he's the good guy! I was drawn into the story from the very start. Nothing was given away or ultra predictable. Great detail and character building. I immediately bought "Cabinet of Curiousities" because I had to hear more from these authors. That book was good, but not as good as this one.
Five stars Yes it is that good!
There is nothing still about this book. From the beginning to the last word, you are taken on a well-crafted ride. What is happening out in the cornfields? Is it a real menace or something supernatural? The perfect setting for the perfect mystery. The narrator, Rene Auberjonois, was the ideal choice to lay the scene. His experience as an actor brought the characters to life. Through him, you are transported in the middle of miles of corn with something staking whatever finds. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs fast past tail is capped off by a double barrel shot gun of an endingbravo!
    Good Book
I enjoyed this title quite a bit. As is usual with these Preston books, kinda weird story with soft ending but very entertaining. Rene Auberjonois is probably the best reader of the many books that I have listened to. He alone is worth the listen on this one. I recommend this book.
    My favorite!
This is my absolute favorite of the Pendergast books! I listen to it over and over again.
Rene Auberjonois is the best Pendergast and his other characters are spot on. The story moves swiftly and keeps you guessing till the last few minutes.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Mitch Rapp's cover has been blown. After leading a team of commandos deep into Iraq to prevent Saddam Hussein from joining the nuclear arms race, he was publicly hailed by the president as the single most important person in the fight against terrorism.
As special advisor on counter terrorism to the CIA director, Rapp is ready to fight the war on terrorism from CIA headquarters rather than the front line. That is, until a platoon of Navy SEALs, sent to the Philippines to save an American family kidnapped by radical Islamic terrorists, is caught in a deadly ambush. The mission had been top secret - so who told the enemy? All evidence points to the State Department and the Philippine embassy. But a greater threat still lurks. An unknown assassin working closely with the highest powers in the Middle East is bent on igniting war. Now, with the world watching his every move, will Rapp be able to overcome this anonymous foe and once again keep the flames of war from raging?
Transporting us into an intriguing geopolitical puzzle full of deadly motives, covert operatives, and all the true-to-life insider detail we've come to expect from Vince Flynn, Executive Power is a high-flying story that delivers shattering suspense with the velocity of a 9mm bullet.
    Members Reviews:
    Undeveloped Plot
Vince Flynn writes great spy thrillers. His main character Mitch Rapp, is the man's man, with just enough of his feelings showing that you know he is human. I enjoy Vince's novels, with their plots that twist and turn, leaving you uncertain how the story will unfold. However, the publishers have decided not to put out all of his books in an unabridge version. Executive Power was a good story, but the telling of the story was so compressed, the reasons behind some of the characters actions weren't fully explained. It left me unsatisfied. I don't know if an unabridge version would make a difference, but based on experience with some of his unabridge novel, tells me it would. A good story, but I'd like to hear the unabridged version.
    Abridged versions are useless
I really don't think the book can be fairly evaluated based on this abridgment (with its somewhat mediocre narrator). Apparently, those responsible for making the cuts have to remove the passages that provide the richness and lovely detail that Flynn typically provides. This makes the whole book two-dimensional and, amazingly, boring. I'm just listening to keep up with background for the next book, "Memorial Day," which is happily available in an unabridged version.
    Undeveloped Plot
The previous reviewer is correct-the story is very "thin".
Probably would have had more reviews if the srory had been better. Not up to Flynn's standard.
Another great story by Vince Flynn.
Nice transition for Mitch Rapp. Vince is the master of the spy mystery novel. Worth the team.
Shades of Team America: World Police
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'd like to believe that those who work in the U.S. intelligence community are not as shallow and ignorant as the characters in this book. Complex character development would have helped.
Would you ever listen to anything by Vince Flynn again?
Perhaps. After I've recovered from this nasty experience.
    You didnt love this book...

    Publisher's Summary:
The nightmare begins when Alex receives a strange package in the mail with no return address. Inside is an ornate album filled with gruesome crime-scene photos - a homicide scrapbook entitled The Murder Book. Alex can find no reason for anyone to send him this compendium of death, but when Milo views the book, he is immediately shaken by one of the images: a young woman, tortured, strangled, and dumped near a freeway ramp.
This was one of Milo's first cases as a rookie homicide cop: a vicious killing that he and his partner failed to solve because the department closed them down. Being forced to abandon the young victim tormented Milo. But his fears prevented him from pursuing the truth, and over the years he managed to forget.
Now someone has chosen to stir up the past. As Alex and Milo set out to uncover what really happened twenty years ago, their every move is being followed, and their lives are placed in jeopardy. While peeling back layer after layer of ugly secrets, they discover that the murder of one forgotten girl has chilling ramifications that extend far beyond the tragic loss of a single life.
    Critic Reviews:
"A hoot of a whodunit...This may be the best Kellerman in years." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    I liked it
Granted, I am an Alex Delaware fan. I like Kellerman's earlier works better as he stayed in the area of child psychology, which is his forte. I did enjoy the murder book on audible. I made two attempts at reading it and did not succeed, however, as a listen, it was worth the time. As usual, Kellerman's characters were interesting and the story, while not his best, was engaging.
    Not For Me
This one started off interesting but soon became tied up in a knot of detail that had no relation to the story. If you like a lot a gruesome detail and not very elegant sexual situations, you might like it.
    Good, But Not Great
The story takes awhile to get started and even when it does get going a bit it still isnt really worth listening to. I think the author did a good job with bringing the characters to life, but failed on making it a strong ending.
Cold Case; Personal History; a New Direction
The death of a retired police officer takes both Alex and Milo back to their beginnings. It's a story about privilege and the lack thereof and it's consequences. A young girl from a bad household is tortured and killed for sport by a group of rich boys. The cover-up has lasted for a lot of years as have the aftereffects, for Milo among others. As Milo and Alex conduct an unofficial unauthorized investigation the lingering shadows of the past affect them both; Alex is also dealing with the breakup of his long term relationship with Robin. As the story comes to a close and Alex deals with a life and death confrontation, Milo fights the power and wins a new role for himself in the hierarchy. An excellent example of the best of Alex Delaware.
    First time with this author
I was thinking about purchasing a more recent work by this author when a reviewer said it didn't measure up to previous works, such as the Murder Book. If that's the case, I won't be listening to the newer one. This book wasn't bad, but it doesn't have me clamoring for more. I suppose the characters are real, since there's nothing particularly likeable about Milo and Alex.

Written in a narrative that grabs and doesn't let go, The Alibi is a top-notch crime novel - and more. With sensitivity and insight into the human condition, Sandra Brown also creates a forceful psychological portrait of a man in moral turmoil, who must make difficult choices between his personal passions and the demands of his conscience.
    Members Reviews:
Another great work by a master storyteller
This is a great murder mystery by Sandra Brown, a master storyteller with the gift of intrigue, plot twists, deception, and the inevitable shocking conclusion. She is a wordsmith with both characters and locations, always making us feel as if we are there with her as she describes settings with a tapestry of colors, senses, desires, and subtle nuances. Old fans will recognize her trademark style in this novel, and newcomers will soon be captivated by her talents.
    Great Book, Poor Narration
I really liked the book, but the narration was BORING. There was no excitement in his voice and I found myself rewinding parts because he would drone on and on.
I will not buy another book the narrator is reading.
    Naration put me to sleep
I really enjoyed this book, but found I had to rewind several parts because I would tune out to the naration. Pity.
    Good story; poor narration
The print book is a better choice if you're a Sandra Brown fan because Redfield's narration spoiled what would have been a great story. I don't need Victor Slezak to do an SB book (though he's my 1st choice) but there are far better male narrators out there than Redfield. He was expressionless and didn't sound like he was interested at all. That came across clearly such that I drifted away myself and ended up listening to something else.
I regretted the purchase and have requested a refund to buy something else. As for The Alibi, I'll go buy the ebook!
    Good Listening!
I count on Sandra Brown to come through with a good novel and she never disappoints me....the "Alibi" is right up at the top with the rest of her novels and was an interesting listen! Keeps you guessing with an ending you wouldn't expect.

    Critic Reviews:
    "The suspense is unrelenting." (Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
A Shadow Novel for A Shadow Woman
Spoiler Alert. In this third book of the Series, Jane Whitefield, super-woman, survivalist, deferential trophy wife, and (mostly) humourless private investigator, comes off with all the excitement of an insurance actuary, and my apologies to all the charismatic actuaries out there (grin).
This Perry protagonist never seems fully fleshed out to me - that saintly, convent girl morality is too evident, whether she's explaining how she's going to fulfill her wifely obligation or why she would vote "no" to a casino on the Reservation or how to avoid getting killed when you are fleeing for your life. Shadow Woman, indeed.
The ricocheting narrative seems to bounce off her, rather than move through her.
I should note that the Whitefield books are not bad; they are just not as good as Perry can be. I think his research is deep, particularly when he's covering geography or explaining how things (eg., firearms) work. So I gave the story a 2 rating.
But Perry can create much better stories, as in The Butcher's Boy series and Metzger's Dog.
These thrillers are leavened by wonderful--and sometimes outrageous--comedy. The author can make bad boys (and, to a lesser degree, bad girls) delightful.
For a suave womanizer, Jane's husband, the doctor, is naive to the point of stupidity, making a fetish of politeness and hospitality while the Evil Psycho-Woman uses seductiveness and manipulation to invade his personal space. Within hours, he gives her the key to his house! Really! Did he never see "Fatal Attraction"?
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Jane is ruminating about her marriage (skip this part, it's a narrative dead zone). When she starts to help her sexy client run for his life through northern Montana and eventually, Glacier National Park, the plot gains much-needed momentum, with interesting adventures (such as using dog tracking to find humans in the bush and surviving a bear encounter).
Perry likes to write parallel plots where one character is leading one narrative strand and his or her foil is driving a parallel narrative strand. Action and counter-action are interwoven build suspense effectively. Eventually, the strands intersect, and this can be explosive, as in "The Informant" when Elizabeth Waring and The Killer connect in an unanticipated, fantastic, fun way. A similarly exciting parallel narrative played out with Chinese Gordon and the Porterfield in "Metzger's Dog".
In this book, Jane and her husband, each in opposite parts of the country, are separately pursued by one half of the Evil Couple, and both wrestle with brief sexual temptation and resist.

The First Deadly Sin made him a success. The Tenth Commandment made him today's best-selling suspense novelist. Now Lawrence Sanders presents his biggest and best ever: the nonstop thriller about a "Hotel Ripper" stalking New York's nightside with a Swiss Army knife and the retired cop named Edward X. Delaney determined to catch him. Or the killer.
    Critic Reviews:
"Big-time suspense.... a first-rate thriller.... It's as good as you can get." (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
The best book in a fantastic series
Psychological thrillers don't get better than this. The Deadly Sin series always cares deeply about its characters and Sanders takes considerable time making sure they appear as real, breathing human beings. But the third book in the series is a masterpiece by itself. You do not need to be a Sanders fan - or even a previous reader of this series - to enjoy it thoroughly.
Written ten years before Aileen Wuornos embarked in her deadly killing spree, Sanders predicts the first female serial killer in American history and tries to imagine what she might be like. Her descent into madness is fascinating and horrifying to watch, as is the methodical Edward X. Delaney as he chases her.
Though Wuornos was not nearly the type of killer that Sanders creates in the "Hotel Ripper", this is a wonderful, intellectual and satisfying read.
Buy it now. You'll thank me later.
    THE HOTEL SPIDER
I have always been a Lawrence Sanders fan. True to form, he doesn't disappoint in offering this story. Try as I might, I could not help feeling sympathy for the killer. If ever there was a need for psychiatric help, this story screams for it. I love the way Sanders manages to include his teams' efforts in discovering the serial killer by hard work and dedication. Also amusing, is the time spent in enjoying the various appetites of the Captain. (Makes you want to pause and go to the refrigerator.) Still, I could have passed on what I thought to be a little, 'preachy' about the plight of women in this country. (We already knew that.) And, as much as I admire the main character, I don't always agree that everything in life is black and white and no gray areas.
Not as Deadly as his previous Deadly Sins
Adding the female killer was an interesting twist in this series, but I think that Sanders struggled a bit with writing her. As a result I found her a little hard to relate to and found her motives weak.

For Tess must find out what happened to a man she thought she knew, to a woman who may have changed him forever, and to the victims of a killer who dances to a different - and deadly - drummer.

Don't tell my wife, but I'm a little bit in love with Tesser
I'm not kidding. Laura Lippman's first Tess Monaghan book was a Daily Deal, & I'm so grateful to have discovered this series. Tess and her many companions are flawed & believable in a way that many authors can't manage. How many female characters admit they "can be a bit of a round heels" when considering cheating on her ever faithful live-in lover...and you still love her? Lippman's also weaves a pretty dense story, which I also appreciate. My biggest fear right now, as I approach book five, is what is going to happen when the wonderful Deborah Hazlett is no longer the voice of Tess, and Crow, and Kitty, etc? I hate it when a narrator I've grown to love no longer accompanies a series I love...well, I do know that I'll find out. As will you, if you try her first book, Baltimore Blues. Thank you Laura Lippman and Deborah Hazelett. And of course, Tesser.
    Tess on the Road
Tess NOT in Baltimore?? Though our heroine admits that she just plain doesn't see any point in traveling, this story is terrific, even if she spends much of her time feeling homesick.
Set in Austin and San Antonio, Texas, "In Big Trouble" explores Tess' relationship with her lover Crow in new ways. In unfamiliar surroundings, she learns a great deal about him and, ultimately, about herself. The story is filled with dead bodies, sad histories, and red herrings. Great stuff!

    Enjoyable
What made the experience of listening to In Big Trouble the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the story by Laura Lippman. As a lifelong resident of the San Antonio, Austin, Texas Hill Country, it was entertaining to hear about the local areas and history that I am familiar with.
Did Deborah Hazlett do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Deborah Hazlett did a good job differentiating the characters, however I found her Texan and Tex/Mex accents annoying and there were several mispronunciations of streets and museums in Austin and San Antonio. Although they were pronounced phonetically correctly, I feel some research into the local pronunciation of towns and words should be done by a narrator. It was distracting to me.

What made the experience of listening to In Big Trouble the most enjoyable?
Another fine one in the series.
What aspect of Deborah Hazletts performance would you have changed?
Hazlett's voicing is good but her pronunciation is terrible and detracts from the meaning of the story.
