Kal Hakala is the Bureau of Supernatural Investigations best agent, but even he needs a break after his last case, which brought him a hairs breadth from death and killed the fiancée of his best friend, a Mescalero Apache agent named Canton Asate. Kals temporary desk-job is nothing less than leadership of the entire BSI. Now it is on his head to assemble teams of agents to fight the latest Supernatural incursions and man up if they fail. Windigo spirits in Chicago are possessing human beings and transforming them into ravenous cannibals. Canton is the natural choice for a team leader because of his knowledge of Native American lore. Is Canton, a legend with a knife, ready to strike again, so soon after his fiancées death? What about Kals own girlfriend, Jeanie? Can he stand to put her in danger and beyond his protection? Kal is forced to use the BSIs cutting-edge virtual reality system to see what makes them both tick. Will the experience of virtually living their lives afford him the will to send those he loves into danger? Can an emotionally damaged man who has never led a team and a woman who traveled through time from the 1940s make the cut? For Kal, the choice isnt easy, but for Canton and Jeanie, it could be deadly.

Cool book, but mainly one big flashback scene
The story is passable, but it really takes a backseat to long flashback scenes on Hal's friends. They are really great flashbacks, but it does take something away from the story so I tagged it a star. No matter how cool the flashback scenes are and I enjoy learning about the characters it is no excuse to short change the main story.
It is still a really good book and worth a credit, but I have to be honest and point out the flaws. Also, it seems as though they may be transitioning Hal out of active field work and into a desk job. I don't know if the series will hold up as well in the future, although a Canton POV book would be pretty cool as well. I hope they find an archenemy for the group and start edging away from monster of the week stories.
Still worth a credit and curious to see what happens next.
Will he ever learn how to pronounce Sidhe?
Two books now almost ruined when the narrator can't be bothered to learn how to pronounce unfamiliar words. Sidhe, Mengele and ennui. Otherwise a good story, but hard to lose yourself in the story when you're flinching every few paragraphs.
Maybe I should just read the book next time.
    I love tough guys
I really enjoyed the way the story was told by different characters & swapped back and forward between the two. The fight scenes r awesome too lots of head stomping. Super cool series. Will listen to the next one too. ;))
    More of a novella
    Any additional comments?
This was much shorter than several other BSI books. It is another very good story focused more on Cantan and Jeanie, mixed with a windigo problem in Chi-town. Another great performance by DA coupled with a cool story, just wish there could have been a little more to it, was kinda short. Eagerly waiting for the next installment.

    Great read
I am enjoying consuming books written by Boo Walker. His characters are great and believable. Descriptions accurate and well written. Also his books are well edited, a must be for me. I would recommend this book to any mystery reader and especially to anyone into government "cops" and/or the war on drugs.
Excellent book set in the"Holy City".
I was born in Charleston but never lived there last 1 year. I visit often so following the plot through the streets and marshes were surreal. I actually could smell the pluff mud that only a person who has walked in it can appreciate.
I always try to finish a book I start and I wanted to quit many times Iwas happy when it ended and could put it behind me.
I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. Boring story about a DEA agent trying to infiltrate a cocaine ring between Atlanta and Charleston.
    Lowcountry Punch
This is a good story that reads quickly. Action and adventure are all over this story, and it all fits together nicely. No blood and guts, but you can imagine.
    Terrific!
Thourghly enjoyed thisread! Entertaining with well written knowledge of skill sets from law enforcement to banjos! Treat yourself to this exciting story.

    Really a great book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend this book to all that enjoy a good thriller/crimestory with mystery feel to it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Life or Death?
So many memorable moments in the story, so many big characters.
What does John Chancer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
John Chancer is so very good narrator and brings depth to the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    A little bit of both!
    Any additional comments?
Just you read this book, you will not regret it.
Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!
Michael Robtham is a genius. I am working my way through everything he's written. He doesn't disappoint !
    Gripping to the end
Better than expected, unique way of investigating a crime and of describing the details of earlier events, police and the justice system on trial. Great story of inmate humanity against the odds, Ardie and Moss were great characters.
    Entertaining!
    Spoilers!
Entertaining story and started out well but the jail break was not very realistic! The story developed quite well and the narrator was very good I'd say slightly short of excellent and a taut story line with lots of twists and slow reveal of the past was a wonderful way of handling a pretty straightforward story which kept an air of mystery and excitement going throughout! The ending was below par but still the treatment of the characters was excellent! One complaint though, the cop should have been handled better and the family life needed more elucidation! The whole good father bad guy thing and the revelation of the actual father and finding that your hero was not the real deal could have been done better. The writer should have killed the lead character!
This was the first Robotham book that I read/heard (got the Kindle version also) and this will not be the last!
    A very well woven story
This was one of my favourite books of 2017. I really liked the way the story worked to complete the total picture, weaving memory, evidence and present day. I have never listened to John Chancer before, but he was excellent at performing different characters and genders, always with an ear to the urgency and pace of the story. I would reccomend this book.

    Aliens and cookie girlfriends
So a guy falls for a pretty girl and disregards her unbalanced behavior. Her belief in Aliens coming to take her and her fellow chosen ones off to paradise in another galaxy. One day she disappears and he follows her all the way to America to find her, even faking belief in aliens himself.
Ok. Enough of the plot. I have read enough by this author (listened) to know that the guy seems to be the same in all the stories. He is a guy who falls almost obsessively in love with a beautiful girl who is somehow not who she seems, who betrays him in some way.
This love I just couldn't buy. Why would the guy fall so hard for someone with beliefs so opposed to his own, someone who is obsessed with her beliefs. So what if she is beautiful? She was a crackpot. Sorry to all you alien believers out there.
    Good but not his best
Another easy-to-read, fast paced story by Mark Edwards. This one is exploring the dangers of sinister cults and the strengths of beliefs. Richard's girl-friend Mary believes in aliens. She is completely devoted to this cause. Richard is a non-believer. Then Mary vanishes and Richard goes on a thrilling search to find her leading him to some dark sections of society.
Because of the alien theme I wasn't sure whether this would be my kind of book, but it turned out to be another really compelling suspenseful thriller. I just love Mark Edward's writing style. He creates characters that come to life and you become invested in what is happening to them. Ok, not his best book, but still thoroughly enjoyable.
The narrator did a good job and was pleasant to listen to.
    3.5 stars overall
    Not his best
I would have to say that out of all the Mark Edwards books I have read, this is my least favorite.
An adequate book. Good read, not great.
The narrator was very easy to listen to. It was why I stuck with the book.
    Disappointed
I should have stopped at chapter 3. It didn't get any better. Not at all the quality that I expected.

Ein Buch das mich nicht losließ. Eine SciFi Story der besonderen Art.
Und ich muss jetzt unbedingt die "Fortsetzung" lesen.
    Excellent time travel mystery.
Finally, Andreas Eschbach's best novel has been released in eBook form (probably, certainly, because its sequel - 'der Jesus-Deal' - is being released later in the year).
I've read it perhaps 4 times over the years, and enjoyed it as much the last time as I did the first time.
Included is a sample from 'der Jesus-Video', which I have on pre-order (I don't expect it to be as good though, but hope to be surprised).
Inexplicably, 'das Jesus-Video' hasn't been translated into English.
    Five Stars
Could not put it down, very compelling
    Like it
It's a nice read and easy. I watched the movie became curious about the book. I'm not dissapointed. Than"s a lot
    Well Written
This was one of the better thrillers I have read in quite some time. Although there are a few holes, the book was well-written and well thought out. What I liked about this particular book is that the author didn't leave you hanging - at least not entirely. The plot centered around a search for a video camera and cassette tape that were supposedly used to film Christ 2,000 years ago. During most of the book you aren't sure whether the whole thing is a huge hoax or whether it really happened. During several of the chapters the reader is left thinking that Christ never existed at all. As has been said in other reviews, the camera and video are eventually found and that is where many thriller authors would have left things, principally because of the complications involved in continuing the plot from that point. However, this author actually takes the plot several steps further and clears up a lot of loose ends. The book pictures the role of the Catholic Church in all of this in a very negative way. Many soul-searching questions and points are taken up as the book goes along. I thought the plot was intriguing and thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone. Sadly, I think it is only available in German. The author ought to get it translated into English so it can be put on the English-speaking market.

    Members Reviews:
    Great mystery/thriller - great performance
Great story. Really enjoyed the twists and the inherent irony. The reading was one of the best I've heard so far.
Add Kerr to your list. Do it now.
Kerr meters out the suspense, keeping things on the boil all the time, none of it spoiled by formula and none of it predictable. He is a deft hand at dialog and the plot is tight and plausible. No heroic papering over holes at the end. Well, much less than I'm used to, and much more artfully done.
After adding Kerr, add Nigel Carrington. He really brings this book to life, and given the abundance of dialog of this book, good narration is particularly important. Are all Kerr's books like this? Don't know, this is my first. But I'm eager to jump into March Violets to find out.
    Definitely not his best
Would you try another book from Philip Kerr and/or Nigel Carrington?
Really enjoy Philip Kerr's novels, especially the Bernie Gunther series. This book, though, is lacking. The story is ok but nothing special. The narration, however, is exceptional.
    Oh dear
Not his best. Almost gave up a few times. Bring back Gunther as a young man perhaps . I was disappointed

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 89 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Number-one New York Times best-selling author Richard North Patterson - the author of more than 20 novels, including Degree of Guilt and Silent Witness - returns with the dramatic conclusion to the Blaine trilogy: Eden in Winter, the final volume that completes the story begun in Fall from Grace.
Two months after the suspicious and much-publicized death of his father on the island of Martha's Vineyard, it is taking all of Adam Blaine's will to suture the deep wounds the tragedy has inflicted upon his family and himself.
As the court inquest into Benjamin Blaine's death casts suspicions on those closest to him, Adam struggles to protect them from those who still suspect that his father was murdered by one of his kin.
But the sternest test of all is Adam's proximity to Carla Pacelli - his late father's mistress and a woman to whom, despite her pivotal role in his family's plight, Adam finds himself increasingly drawn. The closer he gets to this beautiful, mysterious woman, the further Adam feels from his troubles, yet the closer he also comes to revealing the secrets he's striven to conceal and condemning the people he's fought so hard to protect.
An acknowledged master of the courtroom thriller, Patterson's Blaine trilogy, a bold and surprising departure from his past novels, is a complex family drama pulsing with the tumult of the time and "dripping with summer diversions, youthful passion and ideals, class tensions, and familial disruptions" (Library Journal).
    Members Reviews:
    Necessary but a disappointment.
Eden in Winter: Blain Family Trilogy Book 3 Richard North Patterson: Unfortunately, I must admit I was somewhat disappointed in this third and final book of this trilogy. While it had the potential to be very good, a good third (or more) was relegated to a word for word repeat of much of the first book, inserted here and there as flashbacks. Not only was it irritating in that, if needed at all, a mere mention of those events would have sufficed, but they were inserted in such a way as to break the flow of the continuation of the story. I appreciate Richard North Pattersons work, but in this instance, it is as though he couldnt come up with enough to make the third as long as the first and second, and so improvised by adding in repeated text. Sadly, this made me feel as though I had been gypped more so than if hed simply let the story flow and damn the length. 3 stars.
    Repeat, repeat, repeat
I was disappointed with the contribution of new material presented in this book. Much of this book is verbatim - cut and paste from the first book. I expect much more from RNP. Having said that, this does bring an end to the trilogy. As always, I love Dennis Boutsikaris as a narrator.
Another Good Story from Richard North Patterson
With Patterson you know you will get some legal issues and a love interest. The legal drama is mostly outside the courtroom this time. With this book you also get a tabloid reporter stirred into the mix. Adam Blaine comes back from Afghanistan twice to save his dysfunctional family from complete disintegration. Adam is a modern hero who, when he is not rescuing his family, needs to be rescued by them. We get to know Carla the "home wrecker" who, like Adam, is a determined character with a troubled past.

    Narrator Ruins the Listening Experience
What didnt you like about Tavia Gilberts performance?
The narrator uses a whiney, shrill, and frantic voice for the female character throughout the book. The voice is so annoying that it literally ruins the listening experience. I do not recommend purchasing this audiobook.
    Intense
Completely hooked after the first page. Author Andrew Gross, takes you into each scene and you become one with everything thats going on.
    Hysterical
I couldn't listen to this all thru. The reader was absolutely hysterical & it grated on me. I skipped to the last chapter to end it quickly. I just couldn't listen to it all. The story was ok but listening to it was like listening to chalk scratching on a blackboard. It grated.
    The consequences of entitlement
Is there anything you would change about this book?
If I changed anything, it wouldn't be the same book. The mother's sense of entitlement led to her downfall.
What could Andrew Gross have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The book would be more enjoyable if the mother had actually taken responsibility for trying to make ends meet. She needs money, but lives in a palatial house (ok, it's all about the school district), but she can't sell her jewelry???
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    no
    Any additional comments?
If you listened to Be Frank with Me (with Tavia Gilbert as the narrator), you'll keep thinking it's Frank talking as she used the same voice for the son in this book.

Definately one of my favourites from Jo Nesbo.
What other book might you compare The Son to and why?
Can't really compare but The Son is up there with anything written by Mo Hayder and Michael Robotham for me!
Have you listened to any of Sean Barretts other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to many books narrated by Sean Barrett, I love his deep, rich voice, he is one of my favourites. This is one of his best!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Any additional comments?
This is an excellent book, you really feel for Sonny - Jo Nesbo has really created an interesting and complex character in Sonny.
    LOL Funny
No, Jo Nesb's book, The Son, is not a comedy. In fact, it is filled with the drama, suspense, mystery and surprise that make him such a great author. But I have always enjoyed his twist of phrase, metaphors and wonderful use of language. Listening to The Son while I was wandering through a book store I heard one of his great characters, Kalle, say "But ultimately it was about getting the work/life balance right". And I did, in fact, laugh out loud. Why? You'l have to listen to the book to find out.
The Son takes place in familiar settings (Oslo) with some familiar groups (Crime Squad, Kripos) but with new and complicated characters.
Although there were a few moments that tested my credulity, this was another Nesb book that I just could't put down!
    at his best
Would you consider the audio edition of The Son to be better than the print version?
Sean Barret adds a great deal to the experience. He is excellent.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Son?
the achievement of the book is its flawless structure so that each event builds to the finale.
Which character as performed by Sean Barrett was your favorite?
I was convinced by all the major characters. They were written and narrated so expertly that I empathised with most of them, but Simon was probably the one I sympathised with most.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely. I wanted to prolong driving, cooking anything to get a bit further in the story.
This book is a Must! Exceptional
What made the experience of listening to The Son the most enjoyable?
This is my first Jo Nesbo book and I couldn't stop listening.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I constantly went back to listen to this book every break that I got.
    Fantastic as always
I really enjoyed this one. Jo Nesbo is a great, suspenseful writer. Of course it's a little unbelievable, but still great escapism. I do miss Harry Hole though, however it's nice to have a new character who isn't as troubled as Harry, well at least not quite!
