Rio's been fantasizing about reconnecting with Cassie for months. But not here and sure as hell not now. As an undercover agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he's only weeks away from finalizing transport of a terrorist cell over the U.S.-Mexico border, and he definitely doesn't have time for this wild attraction to Cassie, let alone the risk it poses to his cover.
When Cassie's stepfather grows nervous about her investigation and orders Rio to use seduction as a last-ditch effort to keep her from learning too much, the heat between them turns into a full blown inferno. And as the end of the operation draws closer, Rio knows if he tells Cassie the truth about who and what he is, it won't only jeopardize his mission, it may result in him losing her forever. And if he doesn't, his lies and deception could get them both killed.

Searching for closure, Cassie returns to her childhood home on the Pacific Coast of Baja, Mexico, where she launches her own investigation into the accident. Rios been fantasizing about reconnecting with Cassie for months. But not here and sure as hell not now. As an undercover agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, hes working the biggest sting operation in all of northern Mexico, and he definitely doesn't have time for the wild attraction he feels for Cassie. -- Not only is his cover on the line, so is his heart. Because as the end of a yearlong operation draws closer, Rio knows if he tells Cassie the truth about who and what he is, it wont only jeopardize his mission, it may result in him losing her forever. And if he doesn't, his lies and deception could get them both killed....
I loved the suspense that was built in this book. It started with the first page and carried on until the last page. I think Joan did a great job with the entire plotting of the story. The main characters and story-line were well developed and the other characters in the book had you guessing who was good and who was bad. The descriptions of the scenes, situations and emotions were done so well that I felt the same things the characters felt...
Joan did a fantastic job at balancing the romance and suspense and it really fit Cassie and Rio. You never knew exactly how the next scene would play out and it never got old. I thought the intimate scenes were nicely done and not over used, perfect for this story !!
Christa Lewis done a fabulous job narrating and made me feel like i was right there with the characters....

    don't bother
most first attempts are a little rough until the writer and the narrator get their groove going. this book however I cannot finish. the story is written so cookie cutter with such dramatic leaps of faith that I can't justify sitting in traffic and listening to the book anymore. as for the narration, I keep getting lost because it sounds as though the narrator is reading from a textbook. very little intonation the same voice for every character the same tone for every situation, it's just killing me. this book unfortunately has ruined the entire series for me
    Brillant author
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it was interesting, entertaining and a great read or listen :)
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Warren Omissions?
Don't want to give anything away.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
All of Jack Patterson's book make me smile.
    Worst book I've read
The plot, character development, and every aspect of this book was very poor. Although I'm always open to a good conspiracy theory, linking the JFK assassination to the subsequent story line was unbelievable and the plot itself was rather juvenile as if conceived and written by a grade schooler
    Do they offer refunds?
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I'm not sure anyone would enjoy this story. Very poorly written.
What could Jack Patterson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This book would have been more enjoyable to me if he'd thrown this in the trash and started over.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance was fine. There just wasn't much to work with.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No redeeming qualities.
    Any additional comments?
I've read dozens of books about the JFK assassination, both fiction and non-fiction. This was by far the worst. The dialogue was unrealistic and sounded forced. The characters were poorly developed, if at all, and the story seemed to take one ridiculous turn after another.

    Title: Shovel Ready
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Adam Sternbergh
    Narrator: Arthur Morey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-14-14
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 123 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The futuristic hardboiled noir that Lauren Beukes calls "sharp as a paper-cut" about a garbage man turned kill-for-hire.
Spademan used to be a garbage man. That was before the dirty bomb hit Times Square, before his wife was killed, and before the city became a blown-out shell of its former self. Now he's a hitman.
In a near-future New York City split between those who are wealthy enough to "tap in" to a sophisticated virtual reality, and those who are left to fend for themselves in the ravaged streets, Spademan chose the streets. His new job is not that different from his old one: waste disposal is waste disposal. He doesn't ask questions, he works quickly, and he's handy with a box cutter. But when his latest client hires him to kill the daughter of a powerful evangelist, his unadorned life is upended: his mark has a shocking secret and his client has a sordid agenda far beyond a simple kill. Spademan must navigate between these two worlds - the wasteland reality and the slick fantasy - to finish his job, clear his conscience, and make sure he's not the one who winds up in the ground.
Adam Sternbergh has written a dynamite debut: gritty, violent, funny, riveting, tender, and brilliant.
    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, January 2014 - I was initially drawn into this book by its title and grim, gritty cover, but I was even more excited to learn the plot. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic New York City - where the young and poor live in camps in the park, while the rich retreat to an elaborate virtual reality and tells the story of Spademan, a garbageman turned hitman. Spademan doesnt ask any questions about the people hes hired to kill his only rule is no kids. But that all changes when hes hired to kill the runaway daughter of a wealthy evangelist. At times the story reminded me of both Chuck Palahniuk and Philip K. Dick, which is a compliment in my book! Debut author Adam Sternbergh (a writer for New York Magazine) has written a witty, dark, and compelling novel that will appeal to fans of dystopian fiction or suspense.
    Members Reviews:
Noir garbageman in dirty bombed New York
Arthur Morey's Tom Waites voice narrates this first person, garbage man come passionless killer come unlikely hero novel with a convincing mix of insight and resignation.
This book was unexpectedly well written. Rich references give a back story to a man and a New York both devastated by a dirty bomb. The violence is imaginative and sometimes shocking. The characters carry their own motives and complexities. We bond with uncharming people.
If I have a criticism of the book it is that it has two distinct trajectories in it. Part one is futuristic noir. Part two is dystopia conditioned by an imagined technology. Part one is anti-hero, part two is the unlikely redemption of the hero. It works, but I preferred first half Geiger counters to the second half's "lymnosphere."
Suffice it to say that I really look forward to Sternbergh's next.
Did not feel the narrator was a good fit with this
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This was an interesting hit man turned hero story with some intriguing dystopian sci fi elements mixed in. The plot was a bit weak I really couldn't really get why this guy went from unfeeling hit man to guy who needs to protect the world from,,,,I'm not even sure what.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-13
    Publisher: Isis Publishing Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 36 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
November 5th, 1982. It's been one of the worst days of Detective Sergeant Jack Frost's life. He has buried his wife Mary, and must now endure the wake, attended by all of Denton's finest. All, that is, apart from DC Sue Clark, who spends the night chasing a bogus tip-off, before being summoned to the discovery of a human foot. And the night gets worse.
Local entrepreneur Harry Baskin is shot inside his club, an off-licence is set on fire and a famous painting goes missing. And Superintendant Mullett's attempts to join the Freemasons are being rudely thwarted.
As the week goes on, a cyclist is found dead in suspicious circumstances, and the arsonist strikes again. Frost is on the case.
    Members Reviews:
Not as good as the original
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narrator was very good, it was the story that lacked. If the author(s) had not changed facts from Frost's life as described in the original R.D. Wingfield Frost books, it would have been much better.
Would you ever listen to anything by James Henry again?
Yes. I would probably still buy their work. The story was okay for detective fiction, it just wasn't really a Frost book.
Have you listened to any of Stephen Thornes other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first one I've listened to.
What character would you cut from Morning Frost?
None. They all served a purpose.
Ignore other reviewer giving low score...
    Any additional comments?
The other reviewer who rated this low due to it not matching the continuity of the television version is missing the point; these books are prequels to R.D Wingfield's novels, which not only differ in plot from the later David Jason series but paint a vastly different picture of the lead character. For what it's worth, Frost's wife has already been dead for some years in the first of the original novels (Frost at Christmas).
    the best early Frost
Really enjoyed this audiobook, with a great story and excellently narrated.
These are definitely getting better and look forward to the next one.
    Excellent
This was a very enjoyable book, well written, well read and with an interesting plot.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book,
A very rivetting story. Upset when nearly finished and husband came in for tea, couldn't wait to get back to it.

The tenth story in the popular Gil Cunningham series set in medieval Glasgow. 'The tale seems very improbable,' Gil Cunningham said. 'How should the Devil enter a religious house and carry off one of its members?'
How indeed? But Arnold Fleming, the widely dislike pensioner, or corrodian, lodged in the Dominican's house in Perth, has vanished from a chamber, and a local knight and his mistress claim to have seen the Devil abroad that very same night. Three of the friars are accused by their fellows of involvement, documents found in Fleming's lodgings suggest he was blackmailing somebody, and when Gil is called in to investigate, he reveals theft, ancient murder - and more recent secrets. Then a body turns up - then a second one. Are these deaths connected to Fleming's disappearance, or to the victim of his blackmailing activities? Gil's questioning uncovers some of the truth, but it is Alys who discovers the answer, with the help of the Dominicans' redoubtable lay-brothers and the priory kitchens.
Born and brought up in Lanarkshire, for many years Pat McIntosh lived and worked in Glasgow before settling on the West coast.

What did you like most about The King's Corrodian?
learning what a corrodian was and the experiment done to determine how his death could come about.

This book and all the 6 books in the series have been so poorly edited it makes the story line quite difficult to follow at times. The names of the different caracters are frequently mixed up, the books are littered with multiple spelling errors and completely incorrect words are used in many sentances. I might have enjoyed the series if a bit more care had been taken.I will not be reading another book written by this author.

    Members Reviews:
I don't think he likes women very much!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
All the Parker Mysteries have a bit of Aikido philosophy in them, and it's kinda fun, but this one really goes into - a bit to the detriment of the pace of the story. If I want 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance', I'll listen to that. I was hoping for a great mystery, but the story lags a bit when he goes too deeply into the Aikido stuff. He also doesn't really like women. Once again - Parker seems to be a man of all encompassing wisdom (which is cool), but all the women he meets are a bit shallow - they all fall short, and are often a bit petty. It's disappointing.
Has The Aikido Sensei turned you off from other books in this genre?
    no
What does Charles Hinckley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His Parker voice is spot on - he's gravelly and gritty, but introspective and has enough self-effacing humor. I like that. He doesn't do women too well though.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Possibly.
    Any additional comments?
I think I've listened to all of the books in the series - they lapse more and more into long interludes about Aikido philosophy, and the women become more petty - so if another one comes out, I don't think I'll get it. But I've mostly enjoyed all those I heard so far.
