Publisher's Summary:
Feeling lost in the maze of spirituality? Here's the essence, pared down to its most basic ingredients.
There are a lot of books on the spiritual marketplace. The volume is overwhelming. Yoga, mindfulness, reiki, you name it. It's enough to make your head spin.
And mindfulness has received a lot of recognition - not just from its use in therapy, but from scientific research. At the same time, in this modern age, many people just don't want to return to the religious certainties of the past.
This book is for all of those who are looking for a happy medium. It distills the spiritual path, boiling it down to its core elements, and presents it in a way that is understandable and practical for anyone. It all comes down to authentic presence - the state of awakening that already exists within you as the fundamental element of your being.

To the point
As with others works that Tai has written this one follows in very similar footsteps. This book provides a short, sweet and practical review of meditation why its useful and how one benefits from its practice. Anyone who is interested in delving more into the rationale behind meditation then this is the place to start.
Well Written, Insightful, Helpful - Recommend!
I thought this was a very well written book that flowed, was very insightful, chock full of good ideas and perceptions. Being in my seventh decade and having spent my life pursuing peace of mind, I found this book to be exactly what it says - spirituality "pared down to it's most basic ingredients". And for that reason I think it is a great book not only for those who are new to "spirituality" and want to understand the fundamental elements involved, but also for those who have been on the "path" for many years, as a recap and reminder of those many small and large epiphanies that we have garnered over time but still need to be reminded of and remembered.
I totally related to the importance of being "authentic" as explained in the book and although I have not been a consistent meditator by any means, this little book has convinced me more than ever that meditation is easier than most people think but it takes practice. Tai puts forward in simple directions what is needed to start on the path of successful meditation, tapping into the authentic self so that the peace and joy we long for can become a much more consistent state of being. That sounds a bit vague but Tai gets very specific about what we can expect and how things can change for us, making all aspects of our lives better, more fruitful and satisfying. No, it's not easy and it does take consistent work to reap the benefits.
I also really enjoyed the chapter about negativity not always being negative. I had never really read anything like that before and found that helpful as well.
From the book:
"Authentic presence is not about making yourself happy or being a better person. It's about fundamental self-honesty, which allows you to be honest with others. So the goal of this path of authentic presence doesn't have to do with capturing a state of bliss, erasing your negativity, doing an emotional detox, or retreating from the challenges of life. It is, instead, a way of opening yourself up to challenges and negativity so that they can be transformed.
The path of authentic presence could be considered synonymous with the spiritual path.
