The Art of Collaboration

Brilliant. We know a little about almost all of these players, male and female. Katz tells us lots and lots more, with fascinating details. The nature of the Brecht-Weill collaboration is explored in depth. One only wonders now whether "The Threepenny Opera" will come to be known someday as a musical work by Weill or a theatrical work by Brecht, or continue to be known as their shared collaboration. The work itself seems deathless.

History of a musical.

I love The Three Penny Opera. Now I understand it form a historian perspective as well as a stunning work of art. It is even more an astonishing work that I knew.

I enjoyed this, but . . .

I enjoyed this book very much but I want to know who let the author's error that Beatrice Arthur played Polly Peachum in the 1954 revival of "The Threepenny Opera" get past them? For the record, the role was played by Jo Sullivan and Bea Arthur played Lucy Brown. When I reached this comment, I suddenly began wondering how much of the remaining book was as misinformed.

Partnership - More than a history of two guys and their ladyfriends

Art moves society, politics, and humanity at its core--and without most individual's inkling of what initiated the change. Katz chronicles Brecht, Weill, Lenya and their lover's impact at the theatrical fulcrum of German events 1928 through WWII. Their work participates in the societal changes pre-war. Was it Brecht's immediate broad brush social dialogues, Weill's longer view pragmatism in orchestration, or Lenya's act-out-and-see that engenders the more significant events and changes, or just the synergy of collaboration among great artists? The Nazis closed Brecht's theaters, Weill's music came to film for a generation and The Three Penny Opera continues its run throughout the western world.

FLUFFY, YET INSPIRATIONAL

It's an interesting story of Van Cliburn's professional life with lots of review quotes.

As a musician, I found the description of his mother's teaching method fascinating. I found Van's life philosophy to be very inspirational.

This is not a tell-all biography by any means. It gives not a clue to Van's private life, though it speaks often of Van's devotion to the Baptist Church.

I was puzzled as to why this was so until I heard in the credits that it was published by a religious firm.

The only really unfortunate part of this production to me was the excruciating name and foreign language pronunciation of the narrator.

Couldn't he just ask somebody for help? Given Van's high standards of music-making, this slapdash performance is insulting to his memory and the listener.

"It's a long story" in a nutshell

The 10 page summary at the beginning of the book lets the reader into the life of country singer, Willie Nelson who was born in Texas in 1933. Raised by his grandparents, Willie was immersed in music from a young age. The death of his father when Willie was just 6 years old saw his "first bout of depression" which would continue to plague him at different periods throughout his life. Read of his struggles not only in his personal life but also in his music career. It appears that his life was plagued with failed relationships, drugs, alcohol, unpaid taxes etc.

Following the summary is the "Main Characters" where we read a short bio on each. This is then followed by more detailed character analysis which is a wonderfully, informative section. What about the "Character Relationships" which is not just about family but business also? Learn about the main themes of the book which include "The Blues" which is not only talking about his music but also his emotions. Under the "Author's Style" we learn that the original book i.e. Willie Nelson's life story is written in a "simple, straightforward style" with honesty shining through.

Awesome Analysis of a Great Book!

This is an incredible review of the book âItâs a Long Story,â by Willie Nelson. It has everything laid out in a simple to read format and a concise manner. This review has no fluff, but gets to the meat of the book and allows readers like me to feel involved in the themes of the book and adds the highlights of the narratives.

Willie Nelsonâs life was full of ups and downs, and absolutely fascinating. This memoir captures the inspiration of a musician and activist.

Austen's romantic fiction was an interesting genre. Her writing was laden with realism and scathing critiques of both society and the role women played in society during her life. Austen tried several different types of literary styles before settling on writing novels from 1811-1817, releasing Sense and Sensibility (1811), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816). The novels highlighted women's dependence on marrying high in order to obtain better social statuses and financial security. Given the controversial nature of her topics and her writing, there was a strong debate in the 19th century over the merits of Jane's writing and her works.

Decent biography.

An interesting book on her, examining her relationship with her family and how it was a primary influence on her writings. She wrote quite a bit of material before anything got published. Lady Susan was her first serious novel. Her popularity did not make her rich, though.

Very informative.

Enjoyed finding out the history of my favorite author. She started Regency Romances on their road to popularity that has lasted over two hundred years.

Bio of Jane Austen

Even though it was a shortened, this biography provided me with a good examination of the author. A solid thumbs up.
