Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Charles Dickens needs no formal introduction, having been the most popular English writer of the 19th century and still one of the most popular writers in history today. Dickens' upbringing was a mixture of happy times and sad: When he recalled his father being sent to debtor's prison in his memoirs, his tears actually left marks on the page. These qualities eventually helped forge him into a man many regard as the greatest Victorian-era novelist, perhaps in the world, and the author of some of the most remarkable fictional characters who retain tremendous staying power to this day, including Fagin, Peepy, David Copperfield, and Oliver Twist, to name just a few.
Unlike other great writers and artists, during his own lifetime Dickens' works enjoyed remarkable popularity and renown, to such an extent that even Queen Victoria and Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli felicitated and feted Dickens. In the 20th century, well after Dickens' passing, his literary genius was truly and completely appreciated by ordinary readers as well as critics and scholars alike. Dickens' novels, novellas, and short stories retain powerful and enduring popularity with the public largely because Dickens, apart from the usual attributes of good fiction writing, connected his thoughts with the universal by using history and the present as bridges.
By the time he died at the relatively young age of 58 from a stroke, he was already Europe's most famous writer, and obituaries noted that Dickens was a "sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed". Dickens was interred in Westminster Abbey, a rare honor bestowed only upon the greatest and most accomplished Britons.
Many of Dickens' novels were written with the concept of social reform in mind, and Dickens' work was often praised for its realism, comic genius, and unique personalities. At the same time, however, Dickens' ability as a writer was nearly unrivaled, with his ability to write in prose unquestioned and unmatched. British Legends: The Life and Legacy of Charles Dickens details the writer's life and career while humanizing the man who overcame a turbulent childhood to become one of the West's greatest writers.

    Excellent summary
This book provides a fascinating look at Charles Dickens. His life is presented with all the essential details followed by commentary of his works and legacy. I was familiar with only the broad outlines of his life and have read several of his books. This rudimentary knowledge is supplemented with having seen a few very good movies of Dickens works. I am by no means an authority on Dickens but have always enjoyed his works, whatever the delivery medium. I have always been intrigued by how well his works translate to the screen.
This book is an excellent overview for the non expert covering all the main points of his life and work.

Title: American Legends: The Life of Frank Sinatra
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Allison McKay
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-05-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
America has always celebrated its star entertainers, but Frank Sinatra remains a unique American legend. A pop culture fixture for over half a century, Sinatra's music is still cherished, and his persona remains its own archetype of the quintessential American star. Sinatra transcended genres to the extent that his music stands alone as its own kind of American music, with songs like "New York, New York," "Chicago," and "Come Fly with Me" instantly recognizable among all Americans.
Of course there was also the life that went with the music. The cultural identity of the Rat Pack, epitomized in the 1960 film Ocean's Eleven, further contributed to his fame, and everyone knows and appreciates the image of easy living, smooth voice, and exuberant star power that Sinatra represents. If anything Sinatra's ability to make so many people feel happy and good about themselves was one of the main ingredients of his success. And as evidence of the fact that Americans don't mind their stars doing a little dirt, Sinatra's rap sheet and relationship with the mob are practically a celebrated part of his life.
Given his almost universal appeal, it is easy to forget that Sinatra did not always enjoy strong popularity during his career. He had a meteoric rise to fame, but he also suffered a terrible midcareer slump in popularity and was forced to work hard to reinvent his public image. In a sense the many changes to his public identity only make him even more American; the American public loves an underdog figure, and during his rise back to fame Sinatra came to embody the struggling American hero. The many transformations that Sinatra made throughout his career were necessary to cement his legacy as an unshakable American icon.
American Legends: The Life of Frank Sinatra looks at the life, career, and legacy of Ol' Blue Eyes.

    Sinatra
I love Frank Sinatra so whatever he does and whatever is written about him is good for me. This is a small book with pictures and is easy to leaf through and to enjoy. I think anyone that is interested in him will enjoy this but I have to say it is not literary and is not a tell all.
    NOT MUCH OF A BIOGRAPHY
SEEMED VERY SUPERFICIAL DID NOT GO INTO MUCH DETAIL ABOUT HIS LIFE. SEEMED LIKE A QUICK SUMMARY WITH LITTLE SUBSTANCE OR INSIGHT IN TO THE MAN AND HIS EXPERIENCES.
    Complete waste of time.
Glaring factual errors and very poorly written. Since a 9th-grader could have written it better - and would probably have researched it better - I was relieved that it was only 49 pages long. Still, $2.99 was too much to pay for this - a complete waste of time and money.
If you want to know more about him read this book.
This gives you more of the early years and background of Frank Sinatra.
It also tells you about the movies he had with many different superstars. It is an enjoyable read.
    Standard
Just a re-hashing of known facts. For anyone mildly interested and knowing nothing about The Chairman of the Board it's okay but for any historian it's a snoozer.

    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
"Government 'help' to business is just as disastrous as government persecution.... The only way a government can be of service to national prosperity is by keeping its hands off." (Ayn Rand)
Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Jewish parents on February 2, 1905, as Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum, and she lived through the turbulence and transformation of early 20th-century Russia. Her first exposure to reading came after she taught herself how to read at age six, and she decided at nine years old to become a writer after a chance encounter with the books of Victor Hugo, the writer she admired most.
The seminal events in the young would-be writer's life came just a few years later, when she witnessed firsthand the Bolshevik Revolution and the ultimate Communist victory as a teenager. Rand's experience with the maelstrom of this revolutionary zeal and cultural breakdown greatly contributed to the formation of Rand's philosophy of objectivism, individualism, and antireligious ideas. During her last year of high school, she was introduced to the history of the United States and immediately decided to make America her model of what an ideal society should look like. Rand came to the United States as a young woman for a visit in 1925, and, as fate would have it, she never returned to Russia.
In middle age Rand continued trying to write in some capacity as a profession, but she had also formed her personal philosophy of integrating ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, politics, economics, and sexuality into what came to be called objectivism, or, as she called it, "a philosophy for living on earth".

    Good Book
I enjoyed this book and used it for academic purposes. It gave what seemed to be well rounded, accurate information about a fascinating and complex writer/philosopher who really has impacted our world in ways we have not yet even seen.
Some History of Ayn Rand, Doesn't Justify Claim of Being Voice of Libertarians
This reads like a book report of Nathaniel and Barbara Branden's books on Ayn Rand. The first parts about her early history are pretty accurate as is the details on her affair with Branden and some of the weirdness caused by their split. Where this history fails is in regards to her legacy. First of all there is actually nothing in this to justify the claim that Rand was the "voice" of Libertarians and claims the reason she wasn't one was that they were "extreme" in some vague and never to be usefully defined way.
In reality the reason she was hostile to Libertarians was that she was a very strong political advocate of the Republican Party and her activism came out in vitriol towards anyone who wouldn't vote for them such as this quote.
"All kinds of people today call themselves "libertarians," especially something calling itself the New Right, which consists of hippies, except that they're anarchists instead of collectivists. But of course, anarchists are collectivists. Capitalism is the one system that requires absolute objective law, yet they want to combine capitalism and anarchism. That is worse than anything the New Left has proposed. It's a mockery of philosophy and ideology. They sling slogans and try to ride on two bandwagons.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Longlisted for the 2014 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction
"A thrilling and complex book, enlarges our view of Homer.... There's something that hits the mark on every page" (Claire Tomalin, Books of the Year, New Statesman)
From where does Homer come? And why does Homer matter? His epic poems of war and suffering can still speak to us of the role of destiny in life, of cruelty, of humanity and its frailty, but why they do is a mystery. How can we be so intimate with something so distant?
The Mighty Dead is a magical journey of discovery across wide stretches of the past, sewn together by some of the oldest stories we have - the great ancient poems of Homer and their metaphors of life and trouble.
In this provocative and enthralling book, Adam Nicolson explains why Homer still matters and how these vital, epic verses - with their focus on the eternal questions about the individual versus the community, honour and service, love and war - tell us how we became who we are.
    Critic Reviews:
"A thrilling and complex book, enlarges our view of Homer.... There's something that hits the mark on every page." (Claire Tomalin, Books of the Year, New Statesman)
"Bursting with enthusiasm, erudition and eccentricity: a travelogue, a memoir, a work of literary criticism and, at bottom, an archaeology of the western imagination. Completely thrilling." (Susan Hill, Books of the Year, Spectator)
"Only the hardiest immune systems will be able to resist his unselfconscious adoration of the poet. Anyone who feels they never 'got' Homer should read this book." (Books of the Year, Sunday Times)
"Astounding. Scholarly, but so up-close and personal that you feel it in the guts...it transcends genre...you come away exhilarated." (Sofka Zinovieff, Books of the Year, Spectator)
"A brilliant, passionate, world-wandering love letter to Homer...far more inspirational than any dry academic exegesis. If the only real test of any book about Homer is that it should make you want to go back to Homer, then The Mighty Dead passes in a blaze of glory." (Sunday Times)
"A hosanna to Homeric wandering and wanderlust...breathes new life into an ancient adventure." (Observer)
    Members Reviews:
    Homer lives...
Mighty Good... But One has to be familiar with homer to really appreciate how good a book it is...
    The narrator is excellent.
    Often thought provoking, occasionally cringeworthy
What did you like best about The Mighty Dead: Why Homer Matters? What did you like least?
It's an important literary subject and the writer does a decent job in parts of opening up the text. The writer does a good job of conveying the world in which he believes the Iliad and Odyssey were written.
Would you recommend The Mighty Dead: Why Homer Matters to your friends? Why or why not?
If someone has a deep interest in Homer and Ancient Greece then yes I would recommend it. However the reader must understand that this book for large parts in discomfortingly pretentious. The writer seems obsessed with linking himself to the Homeric Heroes through his actions and this at times makes the writer look a little foolish.
