Simple and Poignant

Story of the trials and good fortunes, through hard work and sorrows, to befall an African slave taken to America.

Truly Exciting Book

It was truly an honor to read this book. This is the story of two young men kidnapped from Africa, what happens to them and what they had to go through. Strangely enough it reads like a real story. The research is phenomenal. As you read this piece you find yourself captured in time. It tells us about slavery and the horrors of it all. The story is well written and easy to understand. The characters are well developed. So much so that you even get to empathize with the captain of the slave ship Capt Hannibal. In him we see his struggles. We see the inner fight of doing his job and doing what he knows is right. We watch Manni grow up and how his life unfolds. Through Manni, we get to experience human spirituality as it is faced with a diversity of challenges. Though there are many sad times, this book is truly inspirational and exciting. There are many twists and turns. The book takes you through an emotional roller coaster and drops you off in places that you never expected. I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend it.

Worth reading on a lazy summer weekend

My first review was for the kindle edition of "Butterflies" (The Adventures of Roland McCray). I still stand by that review where I stated "Butterflies" would be a great book for teachers to read to their elementary students. This edition, Finding Roland McCray (Adventures) needs to have a disclaimer, that at a certain point in the book, subjects that will cause controversy in public and private schools are narrated, sometimes in great detail: sex, drugs and religion. These are topics better suited to mature readers enjoying Blaine Coleman's book on their own. The last few chapters are more of a "coming-of-age-in-a-small-town" story. Personally, I enjoyed reading more about Roland's teen years. I learned what intimacy means, from an average young man's perspective. I never saw sex from that viewpoint before. Overall, this edition is worth reading on a lazy summer weekend.

I just love following The tales of Roland McCray. When I heard the author added on to his stories from the original, Tunnels in the Briar Patch, I knew I had to buy it to see what adventures Roland would go on to. Blaine Coleman's collection of short stories as seen through the eyes of eight year old Roland McCray is so detailed and heartwarming. Roland is growing up in the south in a time before children were constantly playing video games and watching television. Roland instead plays outdoors, rides his bicycle, goes fishing and many other outdoor activities. The innocence of the child comes through brilliantly throughout the stories.

Roland has some adventures along the way, playing in a cemetery and finding relics on a Civil War battlefield but he must also deal with some dilemmas of his own; very real dilemmas for an eight year old boy. The story itself was very well written.

I have found this book a little hard to focus with! I really wanted to love it, the premise of the book sounded fantastic, unfortunately for me I just couldn't quite enjoy it as much as I had hoped!

A nice story.

A bit disappointed with this audible book (first time ever). Although the story was ok if a bit slow to start I have never heard the word 'said' used so much. I didn't find the accents very believable either.

À lovely story. Another great book by this author

It is a lovely book although the narrator was boring in the first half, in fact was boring, without any feeling. Sometimes one sentence was finished and she went to the next without a pause, but it got better in the second half of the book.

A three star effort.

Whereas the reflection of the political machinations of the early sixties is interesting, and the characters are fairly well drawn, the language is banal and the writing amateurish. I highlighted some sentences as I read that would have made my high school English teacher tear his hair out. Page 193: "In the silence of the empty apartment, my loneliness bumped against the high ceilings like an untethered helium balloon". Ouch.

So what is literary fiction? Worthy of discussion, but it's not this book.

Starts VERY slowly..

I liked this book in the end as it aptly describes the time between WWII and the mid Sixties through the eyes of people in the literary world. You can see and feel their youthful zeal for printing he truth while trying to navigate in a social/emotional works so different from their parents'. But, man, the first 100 pages are tedious. The setup for the rest of the novel could be achieved in twenty. Luckily, it is light reading so you can zoom through it. I almost just put the book away but in the end, was glad I didn't, just barely.

The Unwitting

While I did not understand everything or every emotion in this book, it drew me in and I found it hard to put down. The title, The Unwitting, refers to those who are not aware of what is really going on! It is a story of a marriage of idealists, the story also of their lives outside their marriage, and how that affects their life together. Very good!

Would Recommend But...

I wish it went a little deeper. Well written and brought some interesting things to light regarding journalism during this time period but I felt as though some of perspectives of the other characters were more in depth.

Informative and Entertaining

Characters are real and the reader feels a closeness to them, understanding their actions even though at first some are surprising. Provides insight to the link between politics and the literary world during the 50's and 60's.

Intricate and Wonderfully Written

Clan of the Black Sun is a wonderfully written story weaving together the terror of the Nazi occupation of France as well as the mystical properties of the Rune Stone, which warps space-time to create its own reality. This alternate reality ties the ancient clans of the Vesel River valley to the resistance groups in Paris during WWII.

Ariele and Mme Bourait must unlock the power of the talisman to escape the German Colonel's chateau prison. Will Richard Soulan be able to reunite the clans/resistance groups and rescue Ariele? Will Ariele ever learn the truth about her husband's past?

The characters are wonderfully written and the story is very nuanced and compelling. I loved this from beginning to end.

The last of the 3 & a good closure

The 3rd of the series (certainly can be enjoyed independently and/or out of sequence. As a trilogy follows characters, their spouses and children from WW I to almost modern era.

Good book, entertaining.

I would recommend

Quality Book

Interesting piece of historical fiction with the fiction aspect in particular being really interesting. The characters were really realistic and well rounded and the plot was creative. I could hardly set the book down once I started.

phew I reached the very end

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This book was fine, a worth a credit. The series as a whole I did enjoy, the first couple of books were excellent and well read, but I was glad to get to the end - I can not put something like this down once I've started - may be one book too far.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

the narrator. He starts the series well but it does not sound as though he could keep up the enthuisiasm _ I would normally be the last one to advocate change the narrator part way through or abridging the last couple of books but something needed to be done.
