    Not the best storyline.
It took me a long time to get into the story as there are so many characters. I found the whole storyline a bit slow going and not a very exciting plot if I'm honest. Not sure if it was the actual story or the narration. I'd don't think it is a story I will be re-visiting.

    Title: Mile of Cars Murders
    Author: Joe Harwell
    Narrator: W.B. Ward
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-13-14
    Publisher: Joe Harwell Publishing
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Car dealers in Norman, a Stillwater newspaper, storm chasers from OU, a bar outside Chickasha, and an automotive chop shop in Harrah are locations featured in Mile of Cars Murders, a new novel by Tulsa writer Joe Harwell that follows a four-year investigation into the disappearance of eight people in central Oklahoma. The Murrah Building bombing and the 1999 Moore tornado are the historical markers for even greater tragedy in the Britton family.
Mother and father, Pat and J.P. (Joe Paul, Sr.) leave home early on April 19th, 1995, relying on their capable teenage sons, Joe Paul, Jr., and Dale, to take care of the ranch outside Perkins, and their siblings, nine-year-old Thomas and 11-year-old Henry. After some rocky times, both personally and financially, Pat and J.P. are taking a much needed day together without the kids to do some shopping in Oklahoma City, with plans to return home by eight pm. As news of the Murrah Building bombing breaks, Joe Paul, Jr., isn't too worried about his parents, since their plans didn't include being in downtown Oklahoma City. When Thomas falls and breaks his arm after school, Dale calls an ambulance, but can't reach his parents, who don't carry a pager or cell phone.
Eight o'clock comes and goes and Pat and J.P. aren't home. When days turn into weeks, months, then years without a trace of them, the Britton boys and other families in central Oklahoma discover an awful truth. A lot of people didn't make it home after the Oklahoma City bombing, but not all of them went missing because of it. With no solid leads for two years, the authorities finally get a break in 1997, jump starting the investigation at a roller coaster pace, which comes to a startling conclusion as the deadly F5 tornado rips through Bridge Creek and Moore in 1999. Mile of Cars Murders is a follow-up to Harwell's 2012 novel, Payne County Weekly.

    Oklahoma Historical Mystery
Mile of Cars Murders by Joe Harwell is the next one in the trilogy beginning with Payne County Weekly. The same characters Bo and Debbie Stark, and LaShell Martin are looking for the couple that disappeared at the end of the Payne County Weekly. During a tornado that rips through the mile of cars dealerships, five bodies were discovered. These bodies are murder victims, not storm victims, and Bo, Debbie, and LaShell continue their hunt for Joe Paul and Pat Britton. They have many dangerous moments as they follow the clues. They lose and ally who turns up murdered in a burned out car. They are often in danger, from the murderers and from the tornados that rip through the state of Oklahoma.
I enjoyed this mystery. The Joe Harwell lays down a logical argument and leads us on a trail of clues. We finally find out who did it during a tornado that kills one of our main characters, Joe Paul Britton, Jr. The characters are well developed. The settings are described in detail, and vivid. The dialogue is realistic. I give this novel a five out of five stars.
    Another tour de force
Mr. Harwell has produced another gripping tale in his Payne County Weekly series. The story's twists and turns will have the reader on the edge of their seat to the very last page.
    Not Your Ordinary Murder Mystery
This entertaining story is much more complex than your typical murder mystery. It is set in Oklahoma with the 1995 bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, as well as a deadly tornado, as the backdrop. There is not a lot of detail about the bombing.

    Critic Reviews:
"Don't keep quiet about The Silent Boy. Tell everyone: it's a really excellent page-turning thriller set at a fascinating period in Anglo-French history" (Robert Goddard)

    A SLOW BURN
    Any additional comments?
As with many of Andrew Taylor's books, the story unwinds fairly slowly at first, then gathers momentum. This plot starts with the French revolution, but moves quickly to Great Britain and turns into a great 18th C thriller.
The reader was pathetic. His contintinual mispronounciations were extremely irritating (gabble for gable!). Doesn't anyone carry out a quality check before publication? It lets down the author, and undermines the quality of the writing.
    Super story, poor narrator
What did you like most about The Silent Boy?
The tale is atmospheric and rattles along
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Silent Boy?
The discovery of the corpse in the boathouse.
How could the performance have been better?
    Too many mispronunciations:
gable pronounced gabble, gavel pronounced gavelle, primly pronounced prime-ly all occur within one hour!
Failure to read ahead leads frequently to dmeaning being misrepresented.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    no
    Any additional comments?
Look out for more written by Andrew Taylor, but only if there is a different narrator.
    Disappointed
I really wanted to like this book, as I'd enjoyed Ashes of London. But the story was dead boring half the time, with very little to keep my interest. I only stuck it out to the end through sheer stubbornness and a vague hope it would improve.
I guessed the main villain early on, which I normally never do.
And as for the narrator- sorry but he was not up to the job. Very thin unexceptional voice, with no talent for accents. All the people sounded similar or ridiculous.
    Great Narration.
Great twists and turns. I found it a very good listen and would recommend it to anyone.
The Silent Boy- excellent but not perfect
This is a fantastic Andrew Taylor story that drags you in and keeps you imprisoned until the last, final shocking twists.
The narration is better than some I've heard but I was annoyed at the repeated mis-pronunciation of "gable" as "gabble", "purlin" as "purelin" and "gavel" as "gavelle", to name but a few. Not enough effort was made to use different voices for different characters and the character with the most distinct voice, Rampton, mysteriously lost it towards the end of the book.

December 1937: The Japanese have taken Nanking. A group of terrified schoolgirls hides in the compound of an American church. Among them is Shujuan, through whose 13-year-old eyes we witness the shocking events that follow. Run by Father Engelmann, an American priest who has been in China for many years, the church is supposedly neutral ground in the war between China and Japan. But it becomes clear the Japanese are not obeying international rules of engagement. As they pour through the streets of Nanking, raping and pillaging the civilian population, the girls are in increasing danger. And their safety is further compromised when prostitutes from the nearby brothel climb over the wall into the compound seeking refuge.
Short, powerful, vivid, this beautiful novel transports the reader to 1930s China. Full of wonderful characters, from the austere priest to the irreverent prostitutes, it is a story about how war upsets all prejudices and how love can flourish amid death.

    Couldn't put it down!
A heart warming story that provides insight into the struggles faced by persons with disabilities as well as those learning to adapt to a new culture. The author weaves a tale of deception, murder, and love wrapped up in a coming of age tale.
The characters are as deep and three dimensional as the plot. I'm hoping a sequel comes soon!
Social Issues of the Past and Today in a Personal Way
This novel interweaves the story of two neighboring families, each with their own challenges. The setting progresses over a period of many years and we see both the conditions in America that have changed and those that have not. The main characters are primarily women and through their experiences we are reminded about how some attitudes about their place in society has changed in our lifetimes. The book also deals with the relationship of government and corporations, so it holds our interest in both an emotional and intellectual way.
    Path of Cowards Opens Eyes
If you are looking for a story that will open a young readers mind to the realities of political and social oppression alive in today's American contemporary society, "Path of Cowards open eyes". It even manages to interweave an entertaining tale of two families struggle to form meaningful relationships in spite of the fate which awaits.
An engaging, fast-paced story about two families in a thriving Detroit suburb
A great read. The novel points to America's unique brand of corporatism and the importance of true competition in the marketplace.
    Fascinating
This is a unique novel that kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend it to everyone!

When heat and drought take their toll on owner of the Double R, Walt Rand, he decides to take action, against the advice of the local sheriff.
    Members Reviews:
    Sturdy Western Melodrama
Many years ago I read "Death of a Gunfighter" by Lewis Patten and enjoyed it. I don't remember if I ever read another Patten western, but I liked his style of writing and his prose. "Guns of Vengeance" was a good, entertaining oater if you like westerns. Patten brings things to a boil early in this fracas between a big ranch--Ramrod--and the farms around it over water rights. The leathery protagonist makes a credible hero, and he has as much to worry about from the two dastards that turn an entire community against him as he has to deal with in his own family. Walt is facing ruin because his neighbor has gotten more than his share of water and Walt's ranch stands to suffer because he cannot grow enough hay to feed his herd. Everywhere he turns, he finds himself facing ruin unless he can re-route the water. Moreover, he has to contend with a sarcastic father confined to a wheelchair who derides Walt's best efforts to handle the situation. "Guns of Vengeance" is a rewarding western. My only complaint is the ending which never ties up the bittersweet romance between Walt's father Jake and Jake's old love interest.
    Unusual tale of vengeance
Walt's father cannot stop riding him and comparing him to his deceased older brother. Yet Walt is a good son, works hard, does everything right that he knows to do. When his neighbor diverts the water that Walt depends on, aided and abetted by the people who should be arbitrators, Walt is puzzled and angry. Solving this problem is the prinipal plot but running in the background are Walt's doubts about his wife. Did she marry him because she loved his brother and his brother died? Did she stay with him out of duty? Could he trust her? There's a set-up, betrayal, lynch mob, burned out ranch, and most of the rest of the standard plot features. But it is worth your weekend.
